October’s bookseller sales

We have a new selection of bookseller sales on the site. In all, seven booksellers have reduced their prices for the month of November – Bookfever.com, 1st Editions and Antiquarian Books, Bobs Books, L. Michael, Kennys Books, Wychwood Books and Strawberry Hill Books. That’s a lovely mix of used, rare and new books.

Most expensive sales on AbeBooks in October 2010

moby-dick-arion-pressOctober’s most expensive sale on AbeBooks, the famous Arion Press edition of Moby Dick with artwork by Barry Moser, illustrates how fine presses are adored by high-end book collectors.

With a price-tag of $28,900, this beautiful book was AbeBooks? second most expensive sale of 2010 – just a handful of dollars less than the archives of Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci that sold in September. Andrew Hoyem founded Arion in 1974 and he is ranked one of the world?s leading printers. See the full list.

Meet the bookstore cats

kikiI have been in this job for nearly six years. If there is one thing I know about used bookshops, it’s there is usually a resident cat sitting alongside the bookshelves. Earlier this year, we asked some of our booksellers to send in pictures of their bookshop cats and explain how they came to own a literary feline.

Our gallery of bookstore cats (by the way, we are calling them a ‘catalog’ of bookshop cats) features Nietzsche from The Book Man in British Columbia, Maggie from Blue Jacket Books in Ohio, Zola from The Iliad Bookshop in California, Kiki from BookMarx Books in Ohio, Cotton from Vintage Books in Arkansas, Booker from The Book Nook of Mexico in Missouri, Shakespeare and Rembrandt from Never Without A Book in Alberta, and Gwenievere from Already Read Used Books in Virginia.

nietzscheSome of these cats have had a hard time and been plucked from animal rescue shelters. Poor old Zola, who only has one eye, was terribly mistreated but the good folks at the Iliad Bookshop have provided a wonderful home for this cat.

Nietzsche is very beautiful and noble, while Kiki looks like the classic playful cat. But frankly, they are all great.

Meet the bookstore cats.
