Calling Mystery Science Theater 3000! April 18, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I agree with the reviewer that said the only way to watch this movie again would be if it were given the MST3K treatment.Joel and Mike and the bots were pros at turning a lemon into lemonade. This movie fails on several levels, as romantic comedy, fantasy, or even as tribute to the original series. Worst of all is the Norah Ephron script. Nicole Kidman as the witch Isabel is a ditz who speaks in a Marilyn Monroe, 'happy birthday Mr. president' cadence. Why she desires to live a normal human life isn't explained. Her fascination and awe with simple every day mortal things like turning on a lawn sprinkler or opening a can of soda seems bizarre, as she has no problems using a credit card or driving a car. She has no chemistry with her costar Will Ferrell who's poor performance is also partly the fault of the poorly written script. Did Nora Ephron even like the original series?
Color me Bewitched, Bewildered, and BEMUSED!!! March 24, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Oh, my gosh this movie is a laugh riot with a capital L! I wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars, because it's even better than perfect. If you need to smile because you've been sick or work has been hard or whatever, my prescription is to take two Bewitcheds and call me in the morning. Because laughter and antiobiotics are the best medicines.
If you're unfamiliar with the plot of this movie, it's like those shows from the 60s ("I Dream of Jeannie" and "Bewitched"), where a guy was married to a magical genie, and the poor guy had to deal with his mother-in-law, and constant other fantastical situations. Will Ferrell is like a classic film clown, and he kind of plays it straight while Nicole Kidman ("Days of Thunder") gets to twinkle her nose and get them further and further into trouble!
There is a reason this movie is considered an instant classic. It's so well done, and colorful!! The script is razor-sharp, although I do not think it stay true to real-life witchcraft. Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman are like a modern day Lucy-and-Ethel and this movie will insist on making you happy in a very forceful manner.
It's bewitching!
So Awful! January 19, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This movie was so horrible I fell asleep for a bit while watching. I used to love watching reruns of this in the eighties as a little girl. I was so delighted there was going to be a movie. This movie was something trying to masquerade as "bewitched" It sucked. Did Nicole Kidman read the script before she signed on the dotted line? Will Ferrel was terrible, he was so bad. They should be ashamed of this movie. It was not funny! I didn't laugh once. The romance they tried to create didn't work! Kidman and Ferrell=no chemistry. It's been a while since I've seen a movie this bad, honestly. I was embarassed for these actors who are some of the best Michael Caine for one. This is one of the worse movie scripts and remakes I've seen.
Bombs away January 8, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a flat out bomb. I bought it for Nora Ephron, whose comedy "Mixed Nuts" is a favorite of mine. But the film is awful: unfunny, uninteresting, and even irritating. Kidman is sooooo cute. Will Ferrell is sooooo forgettable. The casting is extraordinarily poor. (Shirley Maclaine looks as though she is embalmed.) The weak script descended to a car chase to keep the teens interested. And the product placement is painfully obvious. There are no redeeming features in this movie, except that one is greatly relieved when it is over.
Some Clever Ideas That Must Have Fallen Under An Evil Spell January 5, 2008 I loved the original BEWITCHED TV show as a kid and was excited to hear it was coming to the big screen and disappointed when I heard most critics felt it was a dud. Nevertheless my fondness for the old series was enough to make me watch the film version and though I can't recommend the movie it is not quite as bad as I was expecting.
The movie begins with some shots of LA including the Hollywood sign and the first few minutes of the film with Will Ferrel's character Jack and his agent meeting with TV executives gave me hope I was going to see a clever spoof of Los Angeles and the entertainment industry. Unfortunately the send up of the entertainment world is abandoned and the focus of the film turns back to a silly romantic comedy with the "high concept" that Nicole Kidman is a witch (Isabel) who everyone assumes is a regular mortal starring as witch-in-a-mortal-world Samantha in a BEWITCHED revival. Kidman does look a bit like Elizabeth Montgomery who played the original Samantha but I've always found her to be an annoying somewhat self-conscious actress who doesn't have the warmth and naturalness of Montgomery. Will Ferrell is OK in his part as Darren/Jack but some of the supposedly "funny" lines of dialogue he is given especially toward the end of the movie made me wince.
Shirley MacLaine is totally wasted in the Endora/Iris part as is Michael Caine who plays Isabel's father. There's the start of a romance between the Caine/MacLaine characters that is dropped before the end of the film and I was a little confused as to if Iris is in actuality supposed to be a witch also? The Aunt Clara and Uncle Arthur characters are resurrected from the original series but they add very little humor or story development to the script. Isabel's two friends, her neighbor Maria and the production assistant Nina, as well as Jason Schwartzman playing Jack's agent are supposed to add some extra comedy to the film but these characterizations all fall flat as well.
I'm giving the movie two stars instead of one for the classic songs that make up the soundtrack and the few glimpses we see of the original classic 60's sit-com. Someone had a clever idea for this movie but unfortunately it seemed to have fallen under a miscast spell.
