4 out of 5 stars Pretty good   November 6, 2004

I wouldn't say that this book is boring or fabulous, it's just fine. Although i'm a huge fan of Britney, and i used to say that everything about her is fabulous, but this book is not really interesting and it's a pretty short story, you can finish it in 2-3 days. You many consider buy STAGES instead of this, STAGES is 10 times better than A MOTHER'S GIFT!!

    5 out of 5 stars A Mother's Gift   August 15, 2004

This book is pretty average. I would not say it is a good book for older teens to read because the plot is much too simple. I would recommend this for the preteen age group.

The story is somewhat entertaining, with the main character Holly dreaming of being in a famous music school, Haverty. Holly is accepted into Haverty and begins to realize how much her simple country life at home differs from the lives of the other rich students. There is also the mystery of the scar on her mother Wanda's face, which tells the story of Holly's mysterious past.

4 out of 5 stars A must for Britney fans but skippable for everybody else.   July 29, 2004

Fourteen-year-old Holly Faye Lovell has a dream --- she wants to sing, specifically on television, even more specifically on The Haverty's Talent Hour. But how can a poor girl from Biscay, Mississippi who has never even been in an airplane before make her hopes for stardom come true? The answer is contained in A MOTHER'S GIFT, the debut novel from pop sensation Britney Spears.

The story is a pretty simple one; we have all read books like it a thousand times before. Holly is too perfect and sweet and her life in Biscay is free of any pain or worry. She sings in her church choir and has a loyal, loving, hot boyfriend named Tyler. In addition to being all those things and a talented mechanic to boot, it is Tyler who scores her the audition at the prestigious Haverty School of Music, sacrificing their relationship for her ambitions. Holly (of course) aces the audition, even though she has no training and she fumbles through the process. And, of course, Holly is the youngest student ever at the school and given a huge scholarship. Once Holly gets to Haverty, located in cosmopolitan Hattiesburg, she is bunked with Lydia, a beautiful, older and rich student who (of course) underneath it all is unhappy and has substance abuse issues. The girl's adventures together teach them many lessons about life and friendship. Sickly sweet lessons, that is.

A MOTHER'S GIFT is not all bad. Some of the characters are cute and well drawn. In particular, Holly's mother Wanda and the ladies of her sewing circle --- Juanita, Ruby and the others --- are lively and seem like real people. Wanda's side of the story is told through entries of her diary and she comes across as very loving and kind. And then there is the surprise twist at the end of the novel that involves Wanda and the horrible birthmark she has on her face.

I've got to say, I had very very low expectations for this novel. After all, good old Britney is quite good at showing off her navel and dancing like a hoochie, but can she write? She can, but not too well. A must for Britney fans but skippable for everybody else.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing novel   June 15, 2004
Holly Faye Lovelly a fourteen yaer old who dreams big to become a singer. Holly wants bigger and better things, and wants to leave her small hometown. She wants to part of an acadamy of the Arts somewhere away from home.Wanda, Hollys mother wants the best for her and supperts her alot.Holly at first may think its easy to leave her mother and home, its harder then it seems. When she is asked to join the acadamy money starts to become very low.Wanda losses her job and losses there home.During all of the difficulty Holly and her mother gain a stronger relationship and learn to appreseate what they have.

A Mothers Gift is an excilent book.It reaches out to young adults Throughout the story oyu will see the main characters grow and you will become part of trh story.I recomend this novel to those who want to become something very big but have lots of closed doors. You will learn how to push the bad stuff aside and let the good on.

4 out of 5 stars Britney Spears writes a book...   April 11, 2004

I am a huge Britney Spears fan, so of course I am going to pick up this book. I didn't buy it at first, I checked it out at the library just in case I didn't like it. I finished the book in a few days, and I completely love it. It might not be a masterpiece, but it is still a nice story. I read just about all of the reviews prior to writing my own, and some people are really harsh! "Unoriginal" was a word that I saw a lot. Did you people expect a Leo Tolstoy novel? Some people have also criticized Britney and her mother for even attempting to write the novel, and then pointed out typo's in the book. People aren't perfect, it's just a way of life. And I am sure they didn't type the book themselves and then hand it in, and right after that the book became published. Obviously, an editor went through the book and then the book became published. Some people are very narrow minded about things, especially if they do not like Britney Spears, there is already a bias. This book is for people who like nice, heartfelt stories. I recommend that you watch the movie "Brave New Girl" that is based on this book. Britney and her mother produced the movie. It premieres on ABC Family channel on April 26th at 8PM. Keep an eye out for that movie, and then if you like the movie, read the book, or vice versa.

All in all, this book was pretty good. Give it a try and dont listen to the prior reviews.
