Important man, important country September 14, 2006 I have just been introduced to serious studies of Turkey, and am grateful. It offers valuable lessons for westerners trying to understand the Middle East. This book is a good start in that direction. Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) was THE key figure in shaping modern Turkey, in the first part of the 20th century.
As a neophyte regarding Turkey I am no judge of the accuracy of the material presented in this book. However, as an educated reader (and PhD in political science) I like the feel of the book. Kinross is a sympathetic yet critical observer both of Ataturk personally and of modern Turkey - I sense balance and depth of understanding. And without doubt, the material is fascinating. For decades, and essentially on its own, Turkey has grappled with many of the issues that the U.S. is suddenly facing firsthand as it tries its hand at nation-building in neighboring Iraq.
Another biography of Ataturk appeared more recently, with much praise, written by Andrew Mango. The ambitious reader/critic might read both books (Kinross and Mango) and compare them.
