    Product Description

Winston Churchill was one of the most extraordinary figures of the twentieth century. Able to see clearly when so many were blind to the threat posed by Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany, Churchill was strong in a time of crisis and inspired nations to greatness. His colorful and stimulating prose, his perseverance in facing adversity, his prodigious contributions to literature, his devotion to the ideal of liberty, and his courageous leadership are there for all to see and follow.

Best Little Stories of Winston Churchill is a collection of stories from the great man's life. Prepared in conjunction with the author's lectures on Churchill at Oxford University in the summer 2007, it includes stories such as:

    • The many times as a boy, youth, and young man he almost died due to illness, accident, or repeated brushes with death on the battlefield.
    • His prediction during his teen years that one day he would be the defender of London--and England itself--in a horrible war.
    • Draining a pond to recover a watch--a present from his father, Lord Randolph Churchill--he had lost while swimming.
    • His capture and incredible escape from the Boers in the Boer War after hiding in a coal mine among a colony of white rats.
    • His maiden speech in parliament in 1901 at age 26, which was closely covered by England's major newspapers.
    • Learning how to overcome his lisp from an Irish-born American politician who taught him "how to hold thousands in thrall" as a speaker.
    • His secret and fortunately mild heart attack suffered shortly after Pearl Harbor while visiting the White House for Christmas in 1941.
    • His remarkable ascent up the political ladder as a young blue-blood in contrast with his parliamentary partnership with David Lloyd George in creating Britain's early welfare legislation.

If you are a Winston Churchill fan, or a history buff, this is one book you will not want to miss. C. Brian Kelly's biography, "Best Little Stories from the Life and Times of Winston Churchill" is great. I have long been a history buff, but never really read much on Winston Churchill until now. I was truly captivated with the book. Kelly does a great job with these short stories in showing you the man behind the name of Churchill.

The book starts out with Churchill's early life, and to my surprise Churchill was a sickly child who had trouble with authority. This may have been brought on by his inattentive parents, who left his up-bring to a nanny. Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was born into the Seventh Duke of Marlborough's Blenheim palace. The Duke was his grandfather, and Randolph Churchill was his father. While he was born into the Duke's family, they did not like Winston's mother Jennie, an American.

Winston worked his way up through the normal channels like so many other British elite. No one could tell it now, but Winston Churchill, the great speaker, had to overcome a speech impediment. As a child he struggled in school, survived a near death bout with pneumonia, survived three concussions, and even a minor stabbing from a classmate, all before he became a teenager.

Winston Churchill predicted, while still in school, that England would face terrible threats in the future and that he would be the one to come forth and save the British people and country. During World War II with Hitler is when Churchill came through as Britain's Prime Minister, and he gave the people of Great Britain hope.

To conclude, I would say that C. Brian Kelly's book is great. He starts out with the birth of Winston and covers everything up to and including his death, while doing a good job of keeping your interest. The book even has a section on Winston's mother Jennie. This is one book that anyone interested in Winston Churchill should read. The author gives Churchill's life in a straight line yet makes it feel like a roller coaster ride getting to the end of the book. I have to admit I could not put the book down; "Best Little Stories from the Life and Times of Winston Churchill" is a must have. I was impressed and I think you will be, too.

Growing up in America, the great British statesman, Winston Churchill, marginally entered my historical frame of reference. Therefore I was delighted to pick up C. Brian Kelly's 420-page book, "Best Little Stories from the Life and Times of Winston Churchill." This large, but economically priced biography, charts the life of Winston Churchill in a very readable fashion that will be agreeable for everyone, whether young teenagers to more senior readers.

The feistiness of Churchill comes through on every page, from childhood to the end. Here was a man who overcame numerous obstacles - physical and familial - to become one of the greatest statesmen in the 20th century, and Kelly adroitly brings it all out. There abounds seriousness and humor, as well as thoughtfulness.

One of the advantageous aspects of "Best Little Stories from the Life and Times of Winston Churchill" is the way Kelly has formatted the book. Each historical episode is crafted in such a way as to stand alone, and yet every piece builds off of the previous one. Why this is so helpful is that the busy reader can effortlessly pick up the book, read a short section, garner the point, and then put the book down to rush off wherever they must go. Then the reader can come back later, pick up the book and read the next section without much frustration or work. But it will also become quickly obvious that the author has not sacrificed substance for shape.

Finally, there are some little extras which add to the value of "Best Little Stories from the Life and Times of Winston Churchill." The final chapter of the book is about Churchill's mother, Jeanette "Jennie" Jerome Churchill, written by Ingrid Smyer. Next there are some of Churchill's most famous statements. And lastly there is a thorough index for the more academic reader. Overall, this is a valuable, pleasurable, well-crafted work which I highly recommend.
