Useful idea, poor theory November 15, 2008 This book explores a number of important ideas relating to note-taking and visual organization of information. The idea is to move from linear notes to a radial tree-structure. The idea and structure is a sound one-- the resulting notes are more compact information-wise, and the use of other techniques make them easy to use to locate information later. The use of color is a particularly useful suggestion.
So the basic system is well thought out and very useful, but the book approaches the topic from the wrong theoretical angle. The author largely builds the ideas on a pseudo-scientific basis which is probably not very accurate. The simple fact though is that this is a much more compact and accessible format for information storage and retrieval (you can quickly scan an entire page of notes to get the information you need). The entire system is optimized for this and it is well optimized.
In my professional life I do most of my work with text editors that use color to convey meaning, which helps immensely at quickly identifying how a given piece of software works. I am glad to see some practical elements of this sort in this work.
In short, leave the theory aside-- it is not very solid. However the general system is useful and ought to improve both memory and utility of note systems.
I loved this book... April 26, 2008 ...not so much for what it said but for introducing me to the idea of using my own visual system to help me remember information from my classes. When I first started college I was overwhelmed with the amount of information I had to retain.(I'm an "non-traditional" student)I would later learn that plain auditory learning is the hardest to stick in your brain. I had to use other methods or I wasn't going to make it. I tend to be visual anyways and needed time to work on my study skills so I started to study by making up my own mind maps. It worked like a charm. I even used it for my Basics of Research class which earned me a B+. I've used this as one of my methods of study all throughout college. I'm graduating this semester with a 3.8 GPA and the "lessons learned" that I can take into the work world. I also, have on occasion, used a voice recorder to help me to study for a test if I found that it was very hard to get the information into my head. In case you are like me in this respect then this method also works well. Especially if you drive to school and play it back while you are driving. I got A's on most of my tests(hard ones) by doing it like this. Another suggestion. Never buy the computer mind mapping programs. They don't work the same like good old drawing with the hands. Some people learn so easy with just one or two methods while others need more stimulation. It doesn't matter if your are the tortise at school, as long as you get there, thats what counts. Good luck in figuring out your style of learning. I hope you find what worked for me helpful for you.
Everything you need to get started with Mind Maps April 3, 2008 If you were going to buy one book on mind maps, this is the book. It presents the basics of creating a mind map and then goes on to show different ways and situations in which you can use them. There are also some really nice examples of mind maps to get your mind going. You don't need to be an artist. I went through the Radiant Learning workshop that the Buzan Organization teaches to certify mind map instructors back in 2000. I've used mind maps with coaching clients, in workshops and in corporate consulting. You can get what you need from this book to get the benefits of mind maps right now for a really low price. The key is to just follow the basics described in the book and go from there. If you want, you can learn more about mind maps and other visual thinking/creating tools. But this is the one to start with because you'll establish a strong foundation in the basics. Once you read this book, you'll be able to judge if any other book or product has anything new to offer. You can't beat this book for the price and the skills it offers. Mind maps will help you end writer's block, solve problems, create new ideas and more. It's really fun to use with kids too. Enjoy, you'll be doing yourself a big favor!
