    Product Description
The shining metropolis of Seventh City is the birthplace of super powers. The First Wave heroes are jerks, but they have the best gifts: flight, super strength, telepathy, genius, fire. The Third Wavers are stuck with the leftovers: the ability to instantly make someone sober, the power to smell the past, the grace to carry a tray and never drop its contents, the power to produce high-powered excrement blasts, absolute control. over elevators. Bar owner Keepsie Branson is a Third Waver with a power that prevents anything in her possession from being stolen. Keepsie and her friends just aren't powerful enough to make a difference. at least that's what they've always been told. But when the villain Doodad slips Keepsie a mysterious metal sphere, the Third Wavers become caught in the middle of a battle between the egotistical heroes and the manipulative villains. As Seventh City begins to melt down, it's hard to tell the good guys from the bad, and even harder to tell who may become the true heroes.

5 out of 5 stars Good story   November 13, 2008
Like many here, I listened to the podiobook version of this-I didn't get to the end for some reason. I didn't realize that Mur got published! (I really slacked on listening to my podcasts.) I looked her name up on a whim knowing that independent authors sometimes publish their work on Kindle. I'm really happy for her. I love stories with colorful characters and twists on themes and this one delivers. I'm not a big super hero fan but I really do enjoy this story. Hopefully the publishers will pick up her Heaven series??? I'm gonna check her website right now!

5 out of 5 stars Playing For Keeps   November 2, 2008
I love Mur's work. Playing For Keeps is one of my favourite podiobooks. When I heard she had signed a book deal, I had to buy the book. She has even inspired my son to read it - That is praise indeend. Usually I have to stand behind him with a hammer to make him read. Thanks Mur.

    5 out of 5 stars Just A Wonderful Book   October 26, 2008
I have to say that I enjoyed this book so much that I went back and bought more just to give it out as gifts for the holidays. Mur is a great writer.

5 out of 5 stars Not your average superhero!   October 16, 2008
Mur Lafferty does a great job of turning the superhero genre on it's ear with this book. Her writing style includes great descriptions and keeps the action moving. I first experienced it through the podcast which is here: http://www.playingforkeepsnovel.com.

5 out of 5 stars A unique look at a world of wonder   October 15, 2008
Usually when one picks up a book on superheroes, one expects the protagonist to be a cape wearing, mighty champion of justice. One doesn't expect a jaded bartender who wearies of these self righteous champions, their dangerous foes, and the property damage, because it's bad for business!

Keepsie Branson and her friends are all in the same boat, their powers aren't enough for the Academy to make them heroes, and so they use their powers in interesting ways to make a living. Between a bartender who you can't steal from, a chef who can cook exactly what you want, and a man with a sense of smell a bloodhound would be jealous of, Keepsie and crew are an eclectic, interesting and fun bunch. Toss in a major disaster and a catastrophic battle between the forces of good and evil, and you have a very compelling story of survival, friendship, and finding the true power in one's self to do what's right and to use your skills, however trivial they may seem, in doing the right thing.

In a genre that's been up and down and back and forth and reborn again and again, Mur Lafferty's Playing for Keeps offers a different take on the capes and tights crowd, from an outside view, but at the same time exploring some of the unspoken realities in comics: What if you were born with mundane powers, powers that didn't help you lift mountains and light fires with a glance? Keepsie is a very human person, vulnerable yet strong, and loyal to the friends she loves and brave enough to face dangerous situations. A wonderful read for fans of the superhero genre and non-fans as well, lots of fun and clever. Let's talk sequel Mur! Movie deals!! Licensing! Merchandising Merchandising!
