    Product Description

After a summer spent trying to prevent a catastrophic war among the Greek gods, Percy Jackson finds his seventh-grade school year unnervingly quiet. His biggest problem is dealing with his new friend, Tyson-a six-foot-three, mentally challenged homeless kid who follows Percy everywhere, making it hard for Percy to have any "normal" friends.

But things don't stay quiet for long. Percy soon discovers there is trouble at Camp Half-Blood: the magical borders which protect Half-Blood Hill have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and the only safe haven for demigods is on the verge of being overrun by mythological monsters. To save the camp, Percy needs the help of his best friend, Grover, who has been taken prisoner by the Cyclops Polyphemus on an island somewhere in the Sea of Monsters, the dangerous waters Greek heroes have sailed for millennia-only today, the Sea of Monsters goes by a new name.the Bermuda Triangle.

Now Percy and his friends-Grover, Annabeth, and Tyson-must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the Island of the Cyclopes by the end of the summer or Camp Half-Blood will be destroyed. But first, Percy will learn a stunning new secret about his family-one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.

5 out of 5 stars My 13yr old couldn't put it down.   November 13, 2008
My son who is 13 yrs old, couldn't put it down. We ended up buying the whole series. It was very nice to see him want to read!

5 out of 5 stars Great installment to the Percy Jackson series.   November 11, 2008
The other day I posted a review for The Lightning Theif and felt as though I had to continue writing reviews for the other books in the the series.

The Sea of Monsters is continues the first book's great character development and action packed adventures.
This time Percy must set out with his friend Annabeth to find his other friend and satyr Grover who has been held captive by a hungry cyclops.
To do this Percy and Annabeth must sail through the sea of monsters.
While journeying they come across many obstacles and find them selves in peril.

As well as the first one,I could never put it down.
I will continue to post reviews of this series on this site.

5 out of 5 stars Review for the series more than for the book   November 4, 2008
First off, this is an excellant series. It easily teaches mythology, history, and geography through a well-written and interesting adventure. That said, I found this book to be lacking a bit compared to the 1st (The Lightning Thief) and the 3rd (The Titan's Curse) books in the series. Then again, I would give this book 4 stars on it's own because it is still a very good book, and a must for anyone reading the series. Great books for children and anyone interested in mythology.

5 out of 5 stars A great successor to another great fantasy series   November 1, 2008

"The Sea of Monsters" is Book Two in the Olympians series. Percy (Perseus on his birth certificate) Jackson faces a gang of Laistrygonians in gym. They are playing dodge ball when bully kids suddenly become eight feet tall monsters. Their dodge balls turn into bronze wiffle balls with fire inside and are thrown with the power of a speedball. The spell of mist is cast over Coach's eyes to prevent his seeing the truth about demigods--Percy and Tyson, his half-brother who is a Cyclops, and the monsters they are facing in the gymnasium, shut and locked from any earthly interference. Percy does what he needs to do to save him and his brother--basically, he burns down the gym! Plus, Annabeth, his demi-god friend from half-blood camp removes her shield of invisibility to join the fray.

This is one of the most exciting openings I have encountered in fantasy literature. It isn't literally the opening pages, but basically close enough to count. And the action doesn't let up the rest of the book.

The fertile imagination of Rick Riordan engages the reader once again in this sequel to "The Lightning Thief" during which we learn the story of the Olympian move from England to the States. Olympia becomes part of the best of the Western world and its heroic and enlightened civilization.

In Book Two the quest for 13-year-old Percy and Tyson, his half-brother, and Annabeth, his friend from half-blood camp is to find the Golden Fleece (yes, that one) which is hanging in a tree in a pasture tended by the Cyclops that was once defeated by Jason (yes, that Cyclops, that Jason). The Sea of Monsters is now part of the Atlantic Ocean somewhere off the coast of Florida (yes, in the region of the Bermuda Triangle).

As with Book One, Book Two can be read as a stand-alone, but its growing story, always weaving new elements into the already established one is not to be missed. A fourth demi-god, Clarissa, daughter of Mars, plays a pivotal role in this story. Both Percy and Tyson are sons of Poseidon and Annabeth is a daughter of Athena. In Book One Percy is beginning to learn his special power over and in water, while in Book Two, he triumphs in several battles because of this talent inherited from his father. The series incorporates many other characters, gods, and elements from Greek mythology. In fact, one of my library students asked to check out a mythology book to investigate what she doesn't know, not having yet studied mythology.

Note: Artists who incorporate book facts into their covers are doing a disservice when their information is incorrect. This cover shows a grossly over-sized Cyclops eye, a wrongly placed bridge joining two promontories juxtaposed against Scylla and Charybdis. If he is telescoping events, he is still doing a disservice.

The suggested reading audience is ages 9-12 (and also those of us in the adult world who like fantasy/adventure based on mythology).

5 out of 5 stars The Sea of Monsters Rocks!!!   October 21, 2008
Riordan is at it again: creating an interesting and satisfying take that can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. He takes us on another quest with Percy and his friends, and the results are both satisfying and surprising. A must-read for fantasy and mythology fans.
