Product Description Thom Creed is used to being on his own. Even as a highschool basketball star, he has to keep his distance because of his father. Hal Creed had once been one of the greatest and most beloved superheroes of The League--until the Wilson Towers incident. After that Thom's mother disappeared and his proud father became an outcast. The last thing in the world Thom would ever want is to disappoint his father. So Thom keeps two secrets from him: First is that he's gay. The second is that he has the power to heal people. Initially, Thom had trouble controlling his powers. But with trail and error he improves, until he gets so good that he catches the attention of the League and is asked to join. Even though he knows it would kill his dad, Thom can't resist. When he joins the League, he meets a motely crew of other heroes, including tough-talking Scarlett, who has the power of fire from growing up near a nuclear power plant; Typhoid Larry, who makes everyone sick by touching them, but is actually a really sweet guy; and wise Ruth, who has the power to see the future. Together these unlikely heroes become friends and begin to uncover a plot to kill the superheroes. Along the way, Thom falls in love, and discovers the difficult truth about his parents' past. This is a moving, funny, and wonderfully original novel that shows that things are not always what they seem, and love can be found in the unlikeliest of places.

The ultimate outsider December 1, 2008 A teenager on the outs with his dad, his classmates and even society, coming to grip with his identity--what's not to like.
I love that the author has created a world whose complexities mirror our own, but whose canvas of characters allows us to see the hero so clearly and even without a mask.
For True Believers Everywhere November 22, 2008 Things have come full circle when classics of literature are made into graphic novels and stories of costumed superheroes find their way into novels.
I grew up fascinated by the Uncanny X-Men and the New Teen Titans. The X-Men felt like kindred souls to me because they lived in a world that didn't want them. The X adventures weren't intended to be a metaphor for sexuality, but that's how I and many other closeted kids, took it. The Titans were just exciting and fun. "Hero" is a completely original, captivating and moving novel that comines all the fun of the comics I read as a kid in the story of a young man dealing not just with his emerging powers but his domestic problems and sexuality.
With "Hero," Moore takes the frustrations of the X-Men's dilemma and mixes in the usual teen traumas (something The New Teen Titans never seemed to get right) with the sexuality front and center. The main character is Thom, who transcends fiction and comes across as a real live teen. I love that. The experience of this novel is as though you're reading the longest (and most interesting) letter from a friend ever. Moore's imaginative tale is flawlessly written with such a strong narrative voice that the fusion between the everyday and the superheroic goes along without a hitch.
The book is filled with many great characters and situations, and the tale never gets too bogged down with exposition. We learn little secrets along the way and look forward to having everything come together at the end. And when the climax occurs, it's spectacular and full of twists. The real special mention here goes to the way Moore conveys the main character's thoughts and confusion.
The story is that Stan Lee is helping to bring this book to Showtime as a series. That's a thrilling prospect but I suppose they'll have to change the title.
Considering this is a superhero story, what else can I do but hope for a sequel? No matter what, I look forward to seeing what Moore has in store for his next book.
Great book! November 11, 2008 Although the subject matter is not at the top of my list, I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very well written, the characters were endearing and the story flowed and kept my attention. I have and will recommend this book to anyone and especially young people regardless of their orientation or preference. It's a great story about family and faith and beleivinng in yourself. Two thumbs up! Keep up the great work, Perry!
Highly Recommended November 11, 2008 First let me say, it takes a lot for a book to really grab and hold my attention. I borrowed this book from a friend of mine, and I didn't expect too much at first, until i actually opened the book, and WOW. I must say that had never expected such a story before. Myself, I've always wanted to write something kinda sci-fi with homosexual characters going out to save the world, now that I've read one I feel even more encouraged as a writer.
I feel that many gay teens would be able to relate to this book though. It's based in modern day and time, just it also includes super heroes. But the feel isn't like a comic book, it's very real. It doesn't beat you over the head with "i'm fighting for justice and the right way" or any crap like that, it makes you really feel for the character and his emotions, that even in a group of outcasts, you can still feel like an outcast among them. I returned this book to my friend, and I WILL be buying my own copy eventually, I must read it again.
Surprisingly good November 4, 2008 I wasn't expecting much when I bought this but it was great. For a comic nerd its wonderfully cheesy.
