4 out of 5 stars Amerie- In Love and War good listening   February 13, 2010

I really do like Amerie. I have all of her albums and became a fan after seeing her in concert back in the day with Destiny's Child. She is actually very good in concert. I rate this album four stars because it is a solid album. I can listen through the entire album without skipping a song. I think the album cover could have been a lot better. Amerie is an r&b artist and I felt her work reflected that she is an r&b artist. Amerie does not sound like anybody else; that's why I like her. I'm tired of all the music on the radio sounding the same so her album was refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars Amerie Does It Again   January 12, 2010

What does Amerie do so well? She puts out a consistently good album. If you are an old fan of hers, you know what to expect--solid vocals, production and writing. Don't get me wrong you do feel and hear some improvement in her singing abilities and some growth as an artist, but there is nothing on this cd that isn't out of character for her. With every listen, I feel Amerie has grown more comfortable with her identity as a female RnB artist, and she owns every part of it. The cd doesn't sound like she is competing with Beyonce or Rihanna, and fortunately, she stays away from a lot of guest appearances other than Lil Wayne (he's on everyone's cd) and Trey Songz. Amerie stays true to her fans and herself by sticking with what she loves and knows how do to best. As a fan, I appreciate that.

The entire cd is great to me but I will list my favorite tracks anyway:

    *in no particular order

    Heard Em All
    Higher
    Dear John
Different People *I will say this is my absolute favorite song
    Red Eye *very sexy

Established Amerie fans have probably already bought this, so if you are looking for something new that isn't recycled on your local radio station, pick this one up. Your ears will thank you.

    4 out of 5 stars In Love & War   December 22, 2009

I've been a huge Amerie fan since the release of her sparkling debut single, WHY DON'T WE FALL IN LOVE followed by her enjoyable album, ALL I HAVE. Right from the start she struck me as a very smart, determined & talented young woman who wanted to be successful without playing the industry games that "hot" female artists nowadays play to get attention - she didn't pander to the paparazzi, kept her private life private and worked hard at getting a foothold in the entertainment industry. Unfortunately she's gotten locked into some major battles with both of her labels and experienced delays in having her albums released so while the 1st single (1 THING) off of her sophomore album, TOUCH, was huge; by the time the album was finally released nobody was really checking for it like they would've had it been released while the single was hot. I thought it was a successful follow-up that showed clear progression in her music.

After another time lapse, rumored troubles with the label and numerous "push backs", Amerie's 3rd album, BECAUSE I LOVE IT, was finally released overseas and with a hefty $45 import price and absolutely zero promotion by her label it flopped. Sadly this album is her best all-around & displays different genres of music that Amerie rocked so much so that another female artist (who shall remain nameless) quickly copied this idea and while her album is getting acclaim for being a successful risk-taking endeavor, Amerie's was ignored.

Now onto her current release, IN LOVE & WAR - it's a good album on which I think Amerie was content to stay in her lane so to speak. It's a collection that includes songs with the trademark Amerie fevered vocals over unexpected musical arrangements, a few mid-tempo tracks and a few ballads. Overall I enjoy the collection and was sad that neither of her 2 singles released: HEARD EM ALL & WHY R U caught fire with the public. The other tracks that I truly enjoy are: DANGEROUS, HIGHER - a rock inspired track that is urgently energetic; RED EYE - slow grinder that I hope gets a single release; THE FLOWERS - in interviews she was really proud of having written this track so I couldn't wait to hear it and although it's a little long, I love the sentiment of the lyrics; YOU'RE A STAR (interlude) - wish it was a single and MORE THAN LOVE f/ Fabolous - I like the fact that the rapper doesn't overshadow the singer.

SWAG BACK is an ok track that's growing on me moreso for the lyrics; DIFFERENT PEOPLE & DEAR JOHN - are fillers to me neither made a real positive or negative impression on me and lastly I really dislike PRETTY BROWN f/ Trey Songz - I find it a lazy uninspired reworking of a classic song.

As a fan I dig her personality and original vocal stylings but have to concede that at this point Amerie is one of those female artists who for one reason or another just don't "click" with the public at large (I'm thinking Tamia & Debra Cox as other examples) so unless she has a huge cross-over hit, her projects are sadly ignored. I did enjoy enough of this album to highly recommend it to her fan base and hope that others sample tracks to maybe rediscover this underrated artist.
