    Album Description
Some Girls introduced a whole new generation to the music of the Stones. The infectious dance groove of Miss You topped the US charts, as did the album in 1978. Both releases also made the Top 3 in the UK, where the country-flavoured Far Away Eyes, featuring Ronnie Wood on pedal steel guitar, enjoyed substantial airplay. Respectable, the follow-up single in Britain, proved that they could match the punks they had influenced so much. The US market preferred the mid-tempo Beast of Burden which went Top Ten there. A cover of The Temptations' Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me), the driving When The Whip Comes Down, Keith Richards' vocal turn on Before They Make Me Run and the urgent Shattered - a US Top 30 single - make this a must-have album, which has already sold over 6 million copies worldwide, and still provides the group with concert highlights 30 years on. Peter Corriston's striking cover design, controversial at the time, remains a classic.

    Album Description
Digitally remastered reissue of the veteran British Rock band's 1978 album. 10 tracks including 'Miss You', 'Beast Of Burden' and 'Shattered'.

    5 out of 5 stars 4 Times the Charm   February 6, 2010
    J. Williamson (Los Angeles, CA)
This is the 4th time I've purchased this album starting with the original release so yeah I guess I like it (and those who "borrow" it from me really like it too). Early on the Stones were criticized for being derivative in their concept albums - trying to keep up with the Beatles or the latest trends. This album is simply, uniquely the Stones. All their influences are here but they've been fully Stonesified. This album is a seemingly effortless classic. Excellent!

    4 out of 5 stars Strong   January 23, 2010

The strongest non-Brian Jones album. Shattered alone is worth buying this for. If that tune does not get you pumped, you may be dead.

    3 out of 5 stars Stick With a Virgin..   December 13, 2009

As a huge Rolling Stones fan I have to say I am disappointed in this remaster. It is one of my favorite Stones albums but this version on UMG is highly compressed with a major loss in any dynamic range it had.

Yes, the guitars are louder and even clearer in some cases and because of this, many of the songs seem to lose their swing. Oh, it rocks, alright, but the swing that was present in the Virgin issue of 'Respectable' is gone. The break in 'Miss You' (OOooohh ooohh, Everybody waits so loooong) loses it's impact as well as the vocals and Charlie's drums in 'Before They Make Me Run.' In the latter song, the drums used to kick and the chorus used to stand out from the rest of the recording, which it no longer does. The break at about 1:35 in 'Shattered' where the bass drum kicks in is a plodding mess and much clearer and listenable on the Virgin '94 issue. The record, as a whole, loses much of it's depth and warmness as a result.

Perhaps the biggest travesty, and I don't recall any other reviews mentioning this, but at the beginning of 'Beast Of Burden', Keith's guitar is in the right channel and in the left you hear an echoing effect of the guitar lines. It is plainly obvious on the Virgin issue and all previous issues of the recording. On the UMG this is all but GONE! Even when I isolated the left channel and turned it up it was close to inaudible. I put on the Virgin and it's very audible, even without much volume or isolation of the left channel.

If you want the issue that sounds better and sticks closer to the integrity of the original recording, seek out the '94 Virgin remaster and not this. If these sort of nuances are not an issue for you and just prefer loud guitars at the loss of any dynamic range, then by all means, fire away and pick up this UMG remaster. Those of you not familiar with the original recording will not notice a thing. Those of you who are familiar with it do not feel that an upgrade is necessary.

3 out of 5 stars Summer Memories   November 4, 2009

I remember cranking this up the summer of 78' when I graduated. I think "Shattered" was the one that got us the most. Then Lucy made them take her likeness off the cover which made the original LP cover a collectable. I have the remastered CD version from years ago that replicates the LP which slides into the open end of the plastic jeweled case. Dont know if they do it that way anymore for this one. Other Stones CD's are just LP replicas which is fine by me now that I can store them and keep the original safe on my shelf.

One of the best Stones records, sounds even better now. The bass has more depth to it, the higher frequencies contain greater detail. This was an electrifying Stones record to begin with, most of the songs are rock and roll, with a gritty edge to it. To mix it up, they added a couple slower songs like, Far Away Eyes, which has a Country feel to it, or Miss You, which has a dance flavor to it.
