Pathetic December 30, 2009 J. Husband 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Cannibal Corpse is a pathetic excuse for metal. Their guitar and drum work are very simplistic and repetitive. It sounds like it could have been written in five minutes. The vocals are okay but the lyrics have to be the stupidest that I have ever heard. They consist of screaming about blood, guts, and every other disgusting thing imaginable. This isn't metal, this is garbage. If you want real metal I would suggest you check out In Flames(their older albums are best), Lamb of God, Amon Amarth, and there are plenty of other metal bands far better than Cannibal Corpse.
Excellent December 22, 2009 Brett (Des Moines, Iowa) Never really got into the early Cannibal stuff. But I started listening around wretched spawn. That album and Kill are good but not that great imo. Then I bought Plague and was blown away. Their best imo. Very brutal/catchy/technical/.
Blistering!!!! October 8, 2009 Frank Rini (Maryland) Ok the neverending debate of who is better, Barnes or Corpsegrinder on vocals still goes on and on. I would have to say it's Corpsegrinder. While I loved the Barnes material, George just has a much stronger voice that is more menacing than Barnes could ever be. I think Tomb of the Mutilated is the best Barnes era recording and either this release or Kill are the best Crpsegrinder recording. Anyway, sorry for the tangent. E.P. is quite simply the heaviest Corpse recording to date. The title track should prove that to you all. Double bass is pummeing throughout. I found alot of this release having similiar death/thrash elements akin to the bands first cd. Standout tracks are the godly title track, caulderon of hate, evidence in the furnace, skewered from ear to eye and priests of sodom. Really the band is getting better with age and the fact that this is their best selling release to date is a testament to all the trials and tribulations this band has gone through. Production is killer, smiliar to Kill and I just find this release crushing and catchy. Another thig the band loves death metal and is a huge supporteer of the scene, plus they are really down to earth dudes. One of the best cd's of '09!!
'Evisceration Plague'? Really? September 12, 2009 Eric H (Chicagoland) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Alright, I am about to incur the wrath of most of the Cannibal Corpse fanbase in this review. All I ask is that you hear me out, so you will better understand your own hatred for me.
So we have Cannibal Corpse, a band that, whenever anybody says the words "Death Metal", is always the first to be conjured forth. Why? Are they the first death metal band? Are they the fastest? Are they the most talented? No, HELL no. Yet they seem to get credit for all those mentioned.
This album is one that I gave a listen out of a weird sense of curiosity -- I'm a fan of many death metal bands or bands that skew the line between thrash and death metal: Death, Morbid Angel, Master, Possessed, Atheist, Napalm Death, and others. However, I never gave Cannibal Corpse a ride on the proverbial carousel that is the CD player. I've gazed through a couple of their albums, Eaten Back to Life and Tomb of the Mutilated, but that about does it. So this was a mostly fresh go.
Obviously, you probably already know what I am going to say, so I shan't mince words: It's ok. It's average. It's the standard. It doesn't particularly speak to me or grow on me. For one thing, I can't help but look at the lyrics and image as a little tongue-in-cheek. Obviously, a band with albums covered depicting skinned infants and zombies eating their own lungs can hardly hide behind a mask of serious artistic statement. There is no social commentary, no biting satire, no pessimistic world view, just people eating eachother and lots of viable organs lying about in places they normally should not be in order for an organism to survive. Now, I am not a coward, mind you; I simply find it hard to really get into the lyrics, which are a major part of the songs. Maybe it will offend southern christians or the caliber of people who call into Rush Limbaugh, but as an experienced fan of metal music, it really came across as kind of tame to me. Ok, so a guy just vomited his liver onto the salesclerk. How 'bout that...
...But all that is immaterial compared to the actual music, those instruments making all that noise. It's pretty darn good, to be honest. Some of the riffs are catchy, aggressive, and badass. However, I must be forthcoming when I say that every song is pretty much interchangeable, and you can bet that blast beats will be EVERYWHERE. There is nothing wrong with blast beats in and of themselves, but they are but a single piece of the musical structural pie, and I think Cannibal Corpse could use another piece. And as for the lead work, I really found it to be nothing particularly amazing in anyway.
So, is this Death Metal? Yes. But it's stagnant music. They are the AC/DC of the Death Metal world - if you have heard one album, effectively you have a very good idea of the rest. You don't have to sellout to experiment, gentlemen. Some called Chuck Schuldiner that when Death became more then just another one of the generic death metal bands. Those are the same people who have an extremely limited view of what metal is.
Therefore, in the end, all I can say is that Cannibal Corpse is okay. They're decent musicians, and an alright band. But, to me, it's nothing life-changing or great in really any way. I'd definitely listen to this band over the kind of crap you hear today in bands passed off as metal -- your Killswitch Engages and Job for a Cowboys, bands that are one-dimensional, fake, and of a genre that plane sucks. But compared to the rest of my catalog, this band will probably earn more dust then playthroughs.
Still The Best September 10, 2009 MusicFreak (FL) I had the pleasure of recently seeing Cannibal Corpse live for the first time ever. Having been a fan since 1991, it was long overdue. I even caught bassist Alex Webster walking around, and we chatted for a few minutes. It was surreal, especially considering I'm a bass player myself. Their show provided clear, direct evidence that CC is a lean, mean Death Metal machine. My throat and my body took several days to recover.
I have listened to (and seen some of them live) virtually every Metal band of what seems to me a relatively recent wave of Metal bands. I'm talking about Trivium, God Forbid, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God, etc. While there is talent there, none of them hold my interest for more than a few minutes. Most of their stuff seems like slightly updated Metal riffs that have been done before, quite possibly better. Call me old. Call me jaded. Call me biased if you must.
But, Cannibal Corpse remains a band that can pummel the rest without virtually breaking a sweat. Believe it or not, I liked "Kill" but "Evisceration Plague" is simply a better album. Tighter and catchier without losing one iota of brutality and raw power. No real letdowns here, except maybe for "Unnatural." Other than that, this album is one solid slab of pure, unadulterated Death Metal that leaves no doubt that CC are still on top of their game. Even the slower title track, which initially felt like it could use some faster tempos, upon repeated listenings has simply revealed itself to be a superb song. It was the show's opener when I saw them live - after that, my doubts about the song vanished. And no, they didn't speed it up live. Its crushing magnificence was just on clearer display.
Enough rambling. Cannibal Corpse has graced us with yet another solid effort. I was skeptical that they could continue delivering brutal Death Metal without sounding like they were rehashing older stuff. But EP erased all doubt. Take it from a college-trained musician. These guys can play. The fact that they do it in an insanely loud and aggressive manner does not take away one bit from their obvious talent. Hell, the guitarists were featured on Guitar World magazine, AND they ran a transcription of "A Cauldron of Hate." Finally, some recognition from the usually snobby world of musician magazines.
Cannibal Corpse remain the kings of Death Metal. Period.
