Amazon.com Squint at the cover of Circus and it's easy to mistake Britney Spears for the flow-haired Jessica Simpson--an indication that the bold come-ons of 2007's Blackout, a commercial success but a critical letdown, may have given way to something softer and prettier. Don’t be fooled. Circus differs from Blackout in a number of ways, the most important being that 1) it keeps its ringmasters--i.e., its producers--in check instead of allowing them to run an overly sleek show, and 2) Brit brings it vocally here in a way she hasn’t since 2003’s In the Zone (check "Kill the Lights," on which she channels her mentor Madonna and the liquid-y "Blur"). Beyond that, Circus is, as its title promises, a Blackout-like spectacle. Which is not to say the songs being made under this particular big top aren't top quality. Those who pine for the pre-trainwreck Britney will warm to the suggestive but not outright slutty "Mmm Papi," and anyone who can't get enough of the embattled publicity magnet will eat up "Womanizer" and the title track. Spears--let's be honest--lacks acrobatic grace, at least under tabloid scrutiny. What's great about Circus is it proves she's still willing to jump through hoops to make likable, stylish music. --Tammy La Gorce

It rolls into town on the heels of an MTV VMA awards sweep, where Britney walked away with three Moonmen awards for 'Video of the Year', 'Best Female' and 'Best Pop Video' for 'Piece Of Me'. Circus is the follow up to her critically well received album, Blackout, just in in time for her 27th birthday. The lead single, 'Womanizer' (produced by the up and coming Atlanta production team The Outsyders) has already created a frenzy amongst Britney fantaics, radio and the media alike-underscoring Britney's continued reign as one of the Queens of Pop.

A great CD for an underestimated artist... December 13, 2009 Doll-ar I originally only bought this for the song "Womanizer", but then I listened to some of the songs and Britney wasn't the coldhearted g irl people told me she was.
In "My Baby" she talks about how she's amazed her baby is there in her own arms for the first time in her life. It's so sweet. :)
In "Unusual You" Britney's talking about how she's finally found somebody who won't break her heart. Good song for good couples. :)
Even though "If You Seek Amy" is a hidden-meaning song, Britney's singing is good and she's not as horrible as somebody may have lead you to believe.
I will definitely be buying more Britney CDs in the future. :D
the same as always December 10, 2009 Janik Regina (Hungary) I think as a woman of 27 with 2 children should make better music. I mean this CD is good, however not all of the songs, but it's just as lame poppy as she always used to be. I think she should try something more mature. I've always been a fan of hers but I fell she's not evolving at all. I mean she sings about being hungover and she can't remember anything. Nice example for the 2 cute little ones.
I really hate the lyrics about herself and her fame, and also the songs about nothing. I give 4 stars, because I like her songs, and I love some of them. But she's getting older and she's stuck with the stupid lyrics. And btw Amnesia is the best song on this album, and it's not even on it.
My favorite album from a guilty pleasure August 27, 2009 Nerin (Seoul, South Korea) So, I've been a fan of Britney for a REALLY long time, following her music and sticking up for her when others went too far with their criticism; at the same time I was disappointed with her behavior over the last few years. I had very high hopes for this album, and for the most part they were met.
1) Womanizer - Here is a song that, like her earliest songs, is catchy, not too complex, and entertaining. This is what Britney does best. Her low, almost growly vocals during the verses and taunting notes during the chorus are perfection.
2) Circus - This song is most interesting because of its construction - steady, almost slow beats in the verses and faster in the chorus. There's also a certain amount of self-knowledge here, where Britney sings about how much she enjoys being in the spotlight.
3) Out from Under - Unlike most of her ballads - which I generally avoid - this shows a character rarely revealed to the outside world. Britney, in this slow haunting tune, which seems sung from the heart, is insecure, cautious, wary, and heartbroken. "...I know that we tried everything we could try, so let's just say goodbye forever." Very sad.
4) Kill the Lights - One of my favorites from the album. Gone is the sad and world-weary Britney of the previous track; in her place is a wicked temptress who dares paparazzi to do their worst. "I don't like you, you don't like me, it don't matter...Is that money in your pocket, or ya happy to see me?"
5) Shattered Glass - This is my second-least favorite song...possibly ever. It's way too glitzy and stylized, and that's saying something for Britney's music! The emotions, though, as always, are well done. About a boyfriend who's cheated on her, she displays angry pride and spitefulness, whenever you can hear her over the synthesizer. Not to mention that awful "Gla-ee-ass."
6) If U Seek Amy - Ah yes, the controversial song with a hidden obscenity. Nothing to be said about this except that it's pure silliness. Britney is raunchy and self-satisfied.
7) Unusual You - A rather upbeat ballad filled with wistful sweetness and bewildered surprise. "Didn't anyone tell you you're supposed to break my heart? I expect you to." I really like this one.
8) Blur - I would like this better if there were a little more self-consciousness. In this song Britney has found herself in a strange man's apartment after what one can assume was a very indulgent night. For the most part she sounds disoriented and confused, but there are some ad libbed "Hey, yeah!" lines which sound a little out of place for a woman who can't remember what she did the night before.
9) Mmm Papi - Another silly pop tune with a retro feel to it. It's just as silly as If U Seek Amy but more light-hearted and almost innocent, as if the "Papi" in question makes her feel like a teenager again. I dance to this one more than any other; the beat is so infectious!
10) Mannequin - Cold and almost brutal, this Britney doesn't care about anyone else as long as she gets her own way. Normally I dislike the voice synthesizers that make her voice sound like some kind of robot as they scoop her voice up and down, but it works in this song, mainly because of the content. She sounds less than human here, which is the point.
11) Lace and Leather - Indulgent, sexy, and racy. Britney invites an unspecified person to sit back and let her do all the work. Still, there's a feeling that few people excite Britney as much as she does herself. The bridge, complete with whip-cracks, has a definite porn-soundtrack feel.
12) My Baby - Oh, God. Someone should have snuck out of the studio and burnt the tape of this one before it was committed to disc. Infantile, saccharine lyrics about her little boys do Britney no favors, and she mistakenly believes that she can actually sing. Now, I love Britney just as much as the next person, but I am aware of her faults, and one of them is that her voice just isn't strong enough to handle a purely vocal song. She's an entertainer. That's what she should stick to.
13) Radar - I'm sorry, but wasn't this song sort of a bust when it was on Blackout? As it is, it sounds like an early version of Womanizer: the same drumbeats and buzzing background without any of the catchiness.
Great service-OK music August 25, 2009 C. Layne (Raleigh) Great dance music from Britney and I'm glad she has a semi-strong comeback from the drama.

SUMMARY

CIRCUS is without a doubt Britney's long-deserved comeback album! Between a few problems in her personal life during 2005 to 2007, Britney made the effort to release BLACKOUT, an album created to make people remember who really Britney is as an artist (personal problems aside) and that she still was truly the Princess of Pop.
BLACKOUT was a solid album, with futuristic and edgy music with heavy use of synthetized sounds and vocals. The album received rave reviews and performed exceedingly well on the charts, despite Britney not being able to promote it all as well as her previous releases. Still, the sound of the album wasn't the pop Britney is known for, and in a way it showed Britney is multifaceted as an artist and vocalist and wished to explore new realms of sound that reflected her mood during the time.
With 2008's CIRCUS, Britney Spears returned to her famed electro pop roots and delivered 15+ tracks of pure pop delight. The album has already received even greater success than BLACKOUT, having it's first single reach #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 and the album itself reached the top position of the Billboard 200. A feat not accomplished by a Britney album since 1998's ...BABY ONE MORE TIME. The sound we were all expecting from our favorite pop star was reached and put to good use. The Princess of Pop came with a CIRCUS to entertain and amaze us in every way. BRITNEY SPEARS is back, and better than ever!
This is my personal review of the songs in CIRCUS, which I hope will prompt you to buy this album.

SONG REVIEW
-------------
1.WOMANIZER: One of the hottest tracks heard in years, Britney's comeback single is a sizzling #1 piece of electro pop sounds and vocals, with stuttering beats and a hook to kill for. The song is infectiously fun and super catchy and the super sexy video sent this song to the top of the charts. Excellent song and the best in the album! You'll be singing and dancing to it everytime you hear it! 10/10.
2.CIRCUS: A super hot track that was made for Britney and video. Actually it's Britney's third most succesful single ever in the US! The sound is insane and also super catchy with a great chorus. Ties with WOMANIZER for best track! 10/10
3. OUT FROM UNDER: A beautiful ballad sung very well by Britney. It's sweet and melodic and it has great lyrics to accompany it. 10/10
4. KILL THE LIGHTS: A great song about Britney criticizing the media, very similar to BLACKOUT's PIECE OF ME but I think this is more defiant and edgy, and it reflects in the killer sound of the music, which makes it great. It would make a great single! 8/10
5. SHATTERED GLASS: Great electro pop song with a hauntingly good sound. Britney's vocals are also great here. I think it would also make a hot single, although the track is kinda short (around 2:40). Even so, one of the highlights of the album. 10/10
6. IF U SEEK AMY: This was released as the third single form CIRCUS for a reason. First, it's a Max Martin song, who produced Britney's greatest hits, including ...Baby One More Time. Second, the sound is very sexy and danceable, almost naughty. It's got killer beats and a stuttering hot chorus and I loved Britney's super high note close to the end. Many people don't seem to understand the meaning of this song, which from title to lyrics envelops a quite complicated secret message (no, not only that the title spells F.U.C.K. Me). Once you get it, the song and it's accompanying metaphorical video are quite craftul and really make it one of Britney's most smart and well written singles. It reached the Top 20 as a single, a hot hit, but the assumingly controversial message behind it may have hindered its true potential. One of the highlights of the album. 10/10
7. UNUSUAL YOU: A truly unusual track in matters of sound, vocalization and lyrics; their all great. The sound and vocals are excellent in this kinda pop ballad, but what really shines are the beautiful lyrics. Also a highlight and a song with a lot of potential. 10/10
8. BLUR: A song where Britney talks about not remembering what she did after a crazy night. The lyrics are actually pretty good and Britney belts out good high notes, though the song is kinda slow and its not really a ballad. 7/10
9.MMM PAPI: A good song with a kinda retro and latin pop feel. It makes me envision riding a car to a beach in Cancun in the 60's. Britney cowrote this song, which is actually quite catchy and grows on you everytime you hear it. 8/10.
10. MANNEQUIN: A song that Britney cowrote. It'a good song and it has a nice futuristic pop sound to it. 7/10
11. LACE & LEATHER: A really sexy and fun song. It's great! I really like it and Britney's vocals here are just excellent and, along with the inviting pop sound, makes the track actually one of the best. 9/10
12. MY BABY: A really sweet song with a simple sound and tenderly lovely lyrics. Britney's voice is just as it is, with no vocoder or synthetizer, and she really nails the song's notes. The lyrics are really beautiful, and although Britney wrote thinking about her sons, I think it can be applied to anyone you really love and it can be quite magical. Very good. 8/10
13. RADAR: A song from BLACKOUT that was put here as a bonus track for the purpose of releasing as a single in 2009 due to the record company not being able to release it as intended after Britney started recording material for this album. I have to admit, its a good pop song, but its actually not one of my favorites and at first I never really envisioned it as a single. Apparently it performed rather well on the charts without even been released during BLACKOUT's promotion and critics really praised it a lot, even saying "the song has a hook that most pop stars would kill for." The songs keeps growing on me a bit at a time everytime I hear it and I DO like it. It also does have a great electro pop sound and the hook and chorus are pretty good.
After hearing it multiple times, the song has actually grown on me and now I absolutely love it. Now I see why it was a highlight in BLACKOUT. It's good they released it as the fourth single from CIRCUS, because it really is an excellent song. The video made me love the song even more. Despite mixed reviews by critics, I find the video to be one of Britney's best. Its really beautifully filmed and the story is really sexy. No dance sequence, but it works because it's very classy and movie-like in a way. Plus, Britney looks AWESOME. Excellent job! 9/10.
14. ROCK ME IN: A great song that Britney cowrote. This song is really cool, it has a futuristic rock-pop sound and the chorus and everything sounds great. I like it a lot. 9/10.
15. PHONOGRAPHY: Another great bonus track. I really think that ROCK ME IN and this song should be part of the main track list on every CIRCUS album because they're actually great songs with great sound, and they're even better than a few songs in the main track listing. They could've let RADAR as the only bonus track since it already was in BLACKOUT, but oh well. I really recommend buying the DELUXE EDITION of the album to get these final two songs, they're worth the extra money and make the CIRCUS experience a bit more complete. The lyrics on this one are among the naughtiest ever (probably more than IF U SEEK AMY) and the music is really fun and catchy. A really good song. 9/10.
*16. AMNESIA: This song is NOT included in the US DELUXE EDITION but I think it appears in the Deluxe Edition for Japan and the UK. I really don't understand why the didn't put it on the main tracklisting if its sooo good! Mostly everyone in America has heard it by Youtube and everyone seems to really love this song, but don't know how to get their hands on it! The sound is really fun, upbeat and infectiously catchy! It really is an excellent piece of bubblegum pop and the lyrics are really cute and chirpy. I bought the DELUXE EDITION of CIRCUS the day it came out and have listened to it almost every day since then. I absolutely love it! But when I found out about this song and heard it I really started to think about buying the UK and Japan edition just to have this song. Yes, it's that good. 10/10

I recommend this album 100% to any pop fan. Your best buy and my recommendation would be to buy the Deluxe Edition for the UK and Japan to have the 4 excellent bonus tracks (Radar, Rock Me In, Phonography and Amnesia) to make the amazing CIRCUS experience complete!
