 A Future Broadway Musical? Why Not! December 13, 2009

Listen closely to just the first two songs, and settle in for the rest of a riveting musical story that is Alice Cooper Goes to Hell. It's a rock opera worthy of consideration for molding into a Broadway musical, not unlike the great "Chicago" with dark characters, death, and redemption.
It opens with a rock star's fall from the morals and life he knew and once lived, to the wicked ways of stardom and into damnation of Hell. The manipulative dance between the rocker and the devil has surprising rhythms and lyrics, which resonate even now these 30+ years after Alice Cooper Goes to Hell hit the top 40 in the mid-1970's.

even after 35 years die-hard alice fans are still upset over the break-up of the original alice cooper group. while we all hold our breath for a long overdue reunion, we can take comfort in the fact that @61, alice still performs most of his classics on tour and with each new studio release proves that he at least still has a sense of humor.
alice's second solo release, "alice cooper goes to hell", can easily be compared to the disappointment most fans felt about "muscle of love" after the #1 "billion dollar babies" album. Following the exceptional "welcome to my nightmare" lp, there was nowhere for this album to go but south. (pun intended)
don't get me wrong- the over-all concept is here and the cover looks pretty cool, even though it's lifted from the sleeve of "billion dollar babies". the song "go to hell" is certainly an exceptional opener, with trademark alice lyrics on par with "no more mr. nice guy" and "i'm the coolest", from the devil's perspective, was very clever - but - the success of "only women bleed" obviously prompted alice to lean more toward softer, radio friendly tunes where staying in the "devil's food" vein would have been more appropriate. this album had such great potential... i would love to hear it done today with heavier guitars. (it only merits four stars for the creative writing).
having said that, this album does meet the two-rocker quota with "guilty" and the excellent "wish you were here". the tongue-in-cheek "give the kid a break" grows on you as does "didn't we meet" if your willing to give it a few years. heavily orchestrated and definitely exposing "steven's" softer side, the emotional "wake me gently" is saved (barely) by a short, but great guitar solo. probably intended as an inside joke during the disco backlash,"you gotta dance" was just sad, and love it or hate it, the ballad "i never cry" was a huge hit. i personally lean toward the latter.
the "alice cooper goes to hell" tour was planned for august and would feature an elaborate multi-level set, including a disco centerpiece, as we followed alice's adventures through hell. unfortunately alice was already there. diagnosed with anemia, the tour was cancelled with no plans to reschedule. once recovered, alice did perform a short "nightmare" australian tour in march/april of 1977.
released july 1976 it reached #27 usa and 23 uk -- single: i never cry b/w go to hell (#12)
every alice cooper album has great songs that never made radio. it's not the hits, but the deeper cuts that are the real black beauties... blinddog pick: wish you were here / i'm the coolest

This is totally un-Alice Cooper, but you want to know something, this album is great!
Come on, this was the time were Alice was experimenting, and with extreme success. Listen to "You Gotta Dance" for instance, damn right that is a song from the 70's. The classic ballad "I Never Cry" that is a obligatory song on live concerts, "Give the Kid a Break" is another song that you'd never thought of an Alice song, but is a good song anyway.
The album starts very heavy though, as "Go to Hell" is a strong and well written piece of rock.
Most Alice fans won't like this, but if you feel like giving a chance to Alice I assure you won't regret yourself, as this album will make you dance (?) and sing along in most of the time. A great album!

So I was talking to my cousin Larry and asked him what kind of music he liked. He said "Katy Perry, Nickelback, Alice Cooper, Coolio..." and I asked him who this Alice Cooper chick was. Larry told me that Alice was a cool female singer who did some glam rock stuff. I love glam rock like The Darkness and Jeffree Star so I bought this album because the cover art caught my eye because it was hawt. MAN, this album was stupid. It was just a total Jeffree Star rip-off. DON'T BUY THIS, you're going to be disappointed. This is NOT glam, this is simply a joke. But I'm giving it 2 stars because the cover art is really sexi!
