Yep--the artist formerly known as Hannah Montana is going it alone. Having conquered the teen market under her Hannah Montana moniker, 15-year-old Cyrus is now aiming for the adult world; or at least a slightly older audience. Breakout follows her dual-marketed Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus album, and differs from it in that she sounds a little more grown up, a little rougher around the edges, and just a touch more self-expressive. Needless to say, Breakout is produced to within an inch of its life. Every aspect, from concept to mixdown, has been polished and buffed to achieve that perfect tween sheen. Despite this resulting in a somewhat sterile and claustrophobic aura, the album manages to achieve some infectious moments. To her credit, Cyrus has co-written most of the songs here (all but two), which largely eschew electronic dancefloor sounds for a guitar-heavy ethic. The punchy title track (co-produced by the Go-Go's Gina Schock), the thrashy, catchy "7 Things" and the boyfriend putdown "Fly On The Wall" are immediate highlights, but ballads such as "Bottom of the Ocean" and her sped up version of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" are much less convincing. Breakout reveals a genuine young talent, but one that's perhaps being rushed way too quickly towards her prime.--Danny McKenna

5 out of 5 stars 42 year old rocker loves it!   December 21, 2009
    George Lynch (TX USA)
Had it not been for my 5 year old daughter, I would have never heard anything by Miley Cyrus. After being "forced" to watch the Hanna Montana movie I had an entirely new take on her music.

This girl has more talent than 99% of the garbage mainstream music is putting out these days! And she can act! I grew up on hair metal and country; my .mp3 library has over 72,000 songs and never thought I'd have Miley Cyrus in there, but after listening to the Hanna Montana soundtrack I didn't hesitate to buy her latest album for my daughter (and of course, I copied it to my iPod as well). She has an incredible voice and the song selection is top notch. The lyrics aren't dirty or inappropriate, yet they're not "childish"; whether you're 5 or 50 you'll enjoy her music.

I really hope she stays "true" and grounded and doesn't fall into the Hillary and Britney category and get caught up in any scandals. This girl is on her way to becoming one of the BIGGEST music stars...just watch.

This is a great tween CD. Music is fun and clean
Don't have to worry about bad lyrics.

    3 out of 5 stars Good album....buuuut   October 12, 2009

Miley seems to be "borrowing" the beats, riffs from classic songs anymore on her albums.

Listen to "See You Again", and then listen to "Sunglasses At Night" by Corey Hart.. here is the

She needs to learn to stay away from "borrowing" the classic tunes for the "top songs" off her albums.

Other then that this album is pretty good.

1 out of 5 stars Brain Melting Media Hype   October 9, 2009

So what is a 42 year old man doing, reviewing a Miley Cyrus album? Simply this; I know people who have kids that love this girl's music, so I have heard my fair share of the Miley craze. I have recently heard Breakout against my will.. and this is the response: I remember when I was kid and everyone listened to Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, The Greatful Dead and a host of other rock bands. We chose our own music and even listened to some of our parents favorites. But now, we have a bunch of kids and teens running around with hot pink Fisher Price radios listening to Hannah Montannah and the Jonas Brothers. It's pre-school rock at it's worst and it's crammed down kids throats by the mass media. It would be different if this music was good, melodic or well put together.. but it is not. It is overly dramatized Disney music screeched out by teens who really can't even sing. Every song sounds the same from beginning to end of the disk.. and so it has been with any of this teen rock that I have heard. Is it any wonder that the music industry is suffering.. they target five year olds who eventually will outgrow this trash and then they have to start all over again with the kids of the kids. Whatever happened to an honest music industry? It did well back in the day.. but now it buckles under the weight of teen rock that can't stand the test of time. Older bands like Kiss can sell out arenas for years, and sell more albums in a week than a kid like Miley.. but we will push the kiddy rock and make it seem so much more popular. This Music is pure brain melting trash that every teen and pre teen should boycott.. It's not worth the disc it's recorded on. Maybe we should trade in our pastel colored Fisher Price radios for an old eight track player.. and jamm some real music like The Rolling Stones. This " music," if you can call it that is an insult to the younger generation and the very fact that it floods the industry gives the older music fan absolutley nothing to buy. It's time to BREAK OUT of the Miley spell and send her packing back to whatever ranch she came from in Montannah.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre Attempt for Pop Stardom   September 18, 2009

I like Miley Cyrus' voice, but this material is lame and her public image needs some readjusting, There ain't no doubt that she's already heading in Britney's direction. C'mon! Not even Britney was that slutty at 16!

I don't like Miley and how she handles herself in the media, and this album only has a couple of good songs, 7 things is the only really great track on here, and the driveway is also pretty good. Breakout is the most obnoxious in this album, it makes me mad, because it could've been a really good track, the chorus is infectious, but she ruins it with the i hate school, books are lame verse. As if Americans kids weren't already less education motivated!

I can't really see Miley getting into the whole getting busted for drugs like some former teenage starlets because she's really family oriented. But as for dressing like a big slut and acting like one on stage in front of SOOOO many little girls that aspire to be like her, she's already there.

I just saw her performance on Vh1 divas, and i was thinking to myself the whole time, Is she really wearing that!! Maybe she could take some tips from Adele on talent so she won't have to heavily rely on her body to do the singing.

and what's with her being 16 and dating a 21 year old. Seriously???

My guess is that in 3 years, this girl is gonna give Britney's 05-08 rollercoaster madness a run for it's money, who knows? she just also might usurp Lindsay Lohan's crown for ruining a perfectly bright career ahead of her.

One can only wait and see, but mark my words.

Overall i give this album a 4/10. I can't believe i'm actually going to say this, but her Hannah Montana material is much stronger than the crap you'll find here. She actually has a very decent voice, but otherwise i'm not impressed.
