Product Description One of the most influential bands in music, ranked eighth on the list of the biggest-selling groups in history, Metallica unveils its ninth studio album, Death Magnetic. The band's first album in five years, Death Magnetic is also its first with renowned producer Rick Rubin (Danzig, Slayer, System Of A Down, Slipknot), first with bassist Robert Trujillo, and first on Warner Bros. Heavy and thrashy, unafraid to embrace the band's past yet move into the future.

The Four Horsemen Return....To Kick Some Arse! February 1, 2010 CJ Carter (Decatur, AL USA) I'll be brief. This album rocks. It is a CRUSHING, masterful, looooong overdue return to form for one of heavy metal's most beloved ambassadors. Don't listen to the detractors. The boys still got it. It's all here : thrash, speed, fury, angst. If you're like me and has loved Metallica through thick ( And Justice For All ), and thin ( St. Anger ),then you will no doubt deem this latest offering one of their best in years. If you're a 'fan of old', then you will absolutely adore this. Do yourself a favor --- go get it.
Refreshing change from Load, Re-load & St. Anger January 20, 2010 Grant Marshall (Auckland, New Zealand) What can I say - there are already 996 reviews out there as I write this so i'm not holding my breath for any comments. This album is a refreshing "change" for Metallica after the more poppy direction of Load / Reload and the near disaster of St. Anger. This album has the feel of "And Justice for All" without being stuck in the 80's.
It sounds great although there is some clipping on some tracks - not sure if this is intentional? I really like this album its one of the more mature and well thought out Metallica records that isn't overly poppy or uber hard core metal. I reccomend it.
It comes down to this...How often do I listen to DM? January 16, 2010 90's thraxer At least 3 times a week since it was released on September 12, 2008. A few hits and misses since 1991, but a solid, catchy, rock AND thrash album. Every week I have a different favorite song.
Musically good, but soulless January 4, 2010 death metal and black metal (Austin, TX) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I will be the first to admit I wish I could write riffs like Metallica. These musicians have a deft sense of what makes a brain-locking riff, and they use this to good advantage.
Even more, unlike most metal bands, they are well-versed in harmony and other genres, and so easily mix in rock influences -- lots of rock influences. And this is where their downfall begins.
At this point, Metallica are essentially a "metal-flavored" band that really would rather be the Allman Brothers. This is country-metal, with lots of gritty alternative rock thrown in. And in that, it seems out of place with its image. Why not just be a regular rock band, like Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band?
What makes the Metallica listening experience awkward is how much they try, in order to compensate for being metal-flavored rock, to become Jesus for us. They suffer. They are ANGRY. They are rebellious! Raaaaar, fight the machine! But it all rings hollow.
These incredibly talented musicians need a new direction and a new shtick to go with it -- the old one is obsolete and needs replacing.
The Day That NEEDS to Come December 31, 2009 D-Man (Your Bathroom) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Once upon a time there was a band called Metallica... and man, they really had it. Their music was poetry. It was beautiful in every way imaginable. It had a soul. It had a voice. It had a passion. But sadly, Metallica began to fade in 1991 when they gave into the music industry. They traded their talent and their souls for millions and millions and millions of dollars. And since that time, they've never been quite the same band.
The bands whom stayed true and did not give into the "hunger" for massive amounts of money are still making great music today. Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament... these bands were all pioneers of the 80's thrash metal scene, as was Metallica. Actually, I think Metallica was the ultimate. It's tragic.
I think the guys realized it though in the end. With "St. Anger" they tried to go back to their roots and failed miserably. And now this, "Death Magnetic." While "Death Magnetic" is a major improvement from anything the band has done in the last 21 years, one thing is still apparent. Metallica is still totally uninspired. You can hear their desperate attempts to return to the "good ol' days." But it is so forced it becomes painful.
After this release, I have to say that I am officially laying Metallica to rest. I will not buy any of the albums that they plan to release in the future. I am done with them. It is a sad day, but it was inevitable. This is what happens when MONEY becomes the main objective for playing music. Yet so many bands just don't get it.
