Three years ago, a 13-year old Taylor Swift set out to be a star and moved from Reading, Pennsylvania, to Nashville. By 14, she had a publishing deal, and by 15, a recording contract. In these days of Bianca Ryan (and before her, Tanya Tucker and LeAnn Rimes), many are called, but few are chosen. Swift, it appears, is one of the chosen ones. Her vocal talent is modest, though sweetly affecting, her style seemingly influenced by the radio hits of early Sheryl Crow and Michelle Branch, and perhaps Cyndi Thomson. And at times, her youthfulness shows--she encoded messages in the lyrics of her CD booklet, starting with the name of the boy who cheated on her from "Should've Said No" (the album's strongest offering). But in writing or co-writing all 11 songs on this debut, Swift demonstrates remarkable maturity, particularly in crafting a hooky, radio-ready chorus. Though she sounds ridiculous looking back from the perspective of an 87-year old woman on "Mary's Song," to her credit she mostly writes about what she knows--unrequited high-school crushes ("Teardrops on My Guitar"), teenage angst ("Tied Together with a Smile"), and complete immersion in starry-eyed romance (her breakout hit "Tim McGraw"). Swift has such wistful charm and tunefulness that only a curmudgeon could dismiss her, and in fact, more than 60,000 fans lined up to grab this CD the first month of release. No wonder Rascal Flatts and George Strait added her to their tours. Look out, Carrie Underwood--there's a new kid in town. --Alanna Nash

    Album Description
Taylor Swift has been enhanced by the addition of 3 brand new tracks ("I'm Only Me When I'm With You", "Invisible", "A Perfectly Good Heart") and a pop version of the hit single "Teardrops On My Guitar"

Taylor is a good song writer and singer. I like the way she tells a story. Keeps it simple like a country song but is appealing to a broader spectrum.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING--listening to this album may be habit forming   January 4, 2010

Ask anybody that knows me, I'm not a country music fan. But, after hearing some of the songs from her Fearless album on the radio and really liking them, I took the gamble and bought this album and Fearless. Now I haven't even started listening to Fearless because I can't stop listening to this album! This girl has a real gift for putting powerful emotions into beautiful words and turning it into a catchy tune. EVERY SONG on this album is a jewel. The music is lightly produced, which is perfect because it gives more emphasis to her singing. But don't get me wrong, each of these tunes are extremely catchy. I never realized how good a little twang and a banjo could sound. But the real gem here is the lyrics. She wrote/co-wrote each song. Each of them are from real experiences in her life and it shows. She sings of love, longing, vulnerability, heartbreak and loneliness--things that we can all identify with at some time in our life. She's certainly not the first to sing about those feelings. But she shows real literary and musical genius in being able to tell us these stories of her life in a way which causes us to be right there with her as she lived it and to feel it ourselves. Furthermore, all of her songs, even the saddest ones, come from a position of confidence and optimism that remind us that it's OK to be sad when you don't get the person you want every time, when you are different and don't fit-in, and when someone has hurt you.

In summary, Taylor Swift has made me remember how good music can be. Her debut album is like a good book that I hope never ends. This isn't pop candy. Each song deserves to be savored, and if you are anything like me, you won't be able to stop listening and singing along to the songs on this album for a long time.
