For a first greatest hits album Dream Theater nailed it!
The selection of songs is amazing. The mixes rock and it shows off the band for the prog gods they have become.
For a band who couldn't care less about radio play, these guys have developed a fan base that most top 40 posers can only dream about. And they are incredible live.
Although this CD gives a great representation of the bands entire career, you really must check out ALL of their work in order to fully appreciate them. I don't know how they come up an album to top the last year after year. But I hope they never lose the ability.

never heard of this band before. after reading reviews, i bought this cd. i really like this cd, great music
'The Dark Side' CD1, presents the darker side of Dream Theater, and once you're past the hit, then you're off into an intensive listening experience, taking in some heavy slabs of music like 'Peruvian Skies', 'Endless Sacrifice' and 'The Root Of All Evil', which demonstrate how you can move through different gears, and still remain heavy.
'The Light Side',CD2 presents the more melodic side to Dream Theater. There are some really wonderful moments on this CD as Dream Theater display a warmth sometimes missing on 'The Dark Side', where they're busy showing their chops off a bit more. It also has 'Hollow Years', as well as truly stunning songs like 'The Spirit Carries On' and ' I Walk Beside You'.

dream theater greatest hits is great if your new to the band. it has heavy stuff and it has the more mellow songs. it really is a great collection of songs. every song is fantastic, excellent musicians. i can see why they are very popular. they have their own sound. pull me under track i believe was their first breakthrough hit in the early nineties. overall if you like dream theater you cannot goe wrong. great sounding cd. john petrucci is the guitarist, he also tours with satriani and vai. when they do the g3 tour.

I'm a very big fan of dream theater and this compilation was very very good, although i wanted a few songs instead of others but it's pretty cool how they remastered songs.

Ok, so this written from the perspective of someone who isn't opposed to prog rock and listens to a fair amount of punk/hardcore/alternative but isn't really into heavy metal. Why I bought this abomination I don't know. Well, actually I was interested in the prog angle and have yet to come across a decent metal band. So Dream Theater being an innovative metal band crossing the boundaries sounded like a reasonable alternative to my usual fare. This double CD has a "dark" and a "light" side.
Impression of "dark" side: Ok songs but nothing special, overproduced, probably technically brilliant. Reminds me of Metallica, probably because of the singing but less memorable and I don't really consider Metallica a very memorable band. Guess these songs are decent if you like metal. No prog rock here and as "dark" as a day on the ski slopes.
Impression of "light" side: Is this a joke? Come on, even metal heads must cringe at this. Sounds like Bon Jovi meets Europe (not the continent). Who listens to this? Metal fans on Valium? Your little sister? And no prog rock here either.
Summary: Utterly forgettable. No wonder there was only one greatest hit. According to the other reviewers here the prog songs are missing here but going by this boring introduction I doubt that Dream Theater are anywhere in the same league as old Yes, old Marillion or old Pink Floyd even when they play their better songs.
