Album Description UK pressing of the teen queen's 2008 album featuring three bonus tracks: 'Invisible', 'Pieces Of Me' and 'Boyfriend'. Bittersweet World is the third studio album by singer Ashlee Simpson. She worked on the album with producers Timbaland, Chad Hugo, and Kenna. It has been described by Simpson as a "fun party album" with a "silly and quirky" side and some influence from 1980s music. She describes it as having a more beat-oriented sound than her first two albums, Autobiography and I Am Me, although still retaining some of those albums' guitar-based sound. Polydor.

Doesn't quite Life Up to Ashlee's Potential January 26, 2010 Ruthie Ramirez (San Diego) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Ashlee Simpson has been in the tabloids ever since her mess up with getting caught lip-synching on Saturday Night Live. Then there was a big deal about her nose job. What about her music? It seems people seem to focus on other issues just like with her older sister. Bittersweet World is her third studio album produced by Timbaland and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes. She also features guest stars in the indie/emo genre which you would think would make a more interesting album than her previous, but doesn't.
One thing I can say for her is at least she has a more hippy F*** you attitude than her sister giving her more street cred, but unfortunately the album is lacking something. Ashlee's vocals while never completely strong to begin with sound limited. The best song on the album is probably the single "Outta My Head (Ya Ya Ya) which has Timbaland on backing vocals. She is mostly at times more of a drama queen than a singer, which is unfortunate because she does show potential at times. It's just that she relies on her producers and other contributors to make her albums and write songs.
Jealous? January 5, 2010 Trisha R. Jealous? Not really. Just puzzled and deeply annoyed.
I can't answer for others, but what annoys me is that there are LOTS of other, far more talented people who will NEVER get the promotion and publicity they deserve. (And I'm NOT talking about myself or any members of my family.) When someone with no discernable talent whatsoever gets this kind of insane saturation promotion by the record industry, it's a fair question to ask why. There are girls at my local high school who can sing and dance and play guitar much better that Ashlee can. So, like an earlier reviewer asked, WHY HER?
A bittersweet resolution... December 10, 2009 Andrew Ellington (Mulholland Drive) It's slightly (or more than slightly) repetitive and not nearly as ambitious as it wants to be, but there is something about `Bittersweet World' that deserves your attention. Ashlee, the far more talented of the Simpson sisters, come at us with something unexpected (do I hear reggae influence here) and something that is, surprisingly, worth listening to. I say surprising because, as a whole, the album isn't consistent enough or memorable enough, but for some reason I can't bring myself to really hate on it.
I love `Outta My Head' and would have purchased the CD for that song alone, and I did, and I'm still happy with myself. I still adore it. Sadly, the other songs on the album that work the best sound almost identical to it. `Ragdoll' and `Murder' reek of a very similar vibe (as does `Rule Breaker').
The album sounds like it ran out of ideas halfway in.
I love that Timbaland lent himself to `Murder', probably my favorite track on the album. It's a fun song, and a style that suits Ashlee remarkably well.
I like the rest of the album, from `No Time For Tears' way of returning to Ashlee's rock roots (with a little style upgrade). Same can be said for `What I've Become'. Its fun and sounds great coming off of Ashlee's lips. `Never Dream Alone' is one of those tracks that is awkwardly great to me. Her voice sounds forcibly vulnerable here, like she is trying to be earnest and moving and it doesn't work, but the structure and the song itself is a nice touch. If she just went into this honestly and sang it, it would have been possibly the best of her career.
And then there are the tracks I don't really like.
`Little Miss Obsessive', `Bittersweet World' and `Hot Stuff' just don't really work for me. I guess I shouldn't say that I don't like them, I just know that they could have been so much better. They seem lazily constructed, especially `Little Miss Obsessive'. At least the other two have a distinct and unique point of view when compared to the remainder of the album, they just aren't executed well.
Despite this, I still like this album. Go figure. I mean, Ashlee tries something different and succeeds some of the time, falls flat others. At least she reached for something other than typical pop trash. I commend her for that, and I hope that she makes this a stepping stone for a new turn in her career.
I long for the days when she was a pissed off teenage September 3, 2009 George Dionne (Cape Cod, MA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Good
"Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" [sample] is sure to get stuck in yours. There's no way to avoid it with its vocal hook. The song has a catchy bounce that has you waiting for Ashlee to break into 'Oh Mickey your so fine...' I thought Ashlee had graduated to men, but "Boys" explores her fascination with driving the opposite sex crazy. Driving guitars drive home the chorus of "No Time for Tears." The distortion returns for Ashlee's inability to let go on "Little Miss Obsessive." Tom Higginson of the Plain White T's makes a guest appearance here. Simpson channels her inner Pat Benatar on "Bittersweet World."
The Bad
I was a bit disappointed the Simpson chose to abandon the rock sound she had going on.
The Verdict
Ashlee Simpson has traded in rock guitars for funky dance beat rhythms courtesy of the hottest pop-producers in the business Timbaland and Neptunes. How can you blame her when Gwen Stefani and Fergie did the same thing and made millions. Ashlee's latest batch of songs are still pretty damn catchy (I challenge you to listen with out repeating ay ya ya in your head all day), but I long for the days when she was a pissed off teenage that wanted to rock out her frustrations.
Refreshing and Fabulous! June 23, 2009 J. Yoon (California, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I haven't been a fan of Ashlee's for a long time- just from 2007, when I bought her CD "I Am Me." I fell in love with it immediately, loving her unique voice, sound, and emotional music. I was eager to buy this CD, but I waited until now because I wanted to insure that I would have had time to process all the songs, so I wouldn't just submit a review the day after it's release and squeal about how lovely it is, and have to update later saying that the songs were the most annoying of it's kind.
"Bittersweet World" is fresh pop. I would describe the sound as having:
The catchiness and addictive beat of Britney Spears
The emotion of Destiny's Child (though the sound is extremely different)
The confidence and energy of Avril Lavigne
The slightly different sound of Blake Lewis
The wild playfulness of P!nk
And the edginess of Rihanna
I am going to admit that Ashlee does not have the best vocals in the world- far from it. However, the sound it unique and her songs are pleasant. Without a particularly wide vocal range, she leans on addictive songs and emotional moods (less on this album, but it was a common sight on her number one album "I Am Me.") It doesn't hurt that she is absolutely gorgeous and doesn't try to fake her attitude and doesn't try to copy her older sister.
This disc has the material to be a huge success if people would take the time to look away from the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus, and most of these songs are the kind that you would listen to long after the release.
My personal favorite tracks are:
Track 1 "Outta My head (Ay Ya Ya) "
It's infectiously addictive and the sound in interesting
Track 2 "Boys"
Flirty, confident, and channels Avril Lavigne's sound
Track 5 "Little Miss Obsessive"
This is one of the songs that makes you think Wow, Ashlee's songs have really been improving as far as lyrics, emotion, and staying power
Track 8 "What I've Become"
Looking at the list so far of my favorites, I would have to admit that this song is a little bit more commercial with it's quick, catchy beat
Track 10 "Murder"
"Murder" has a slightly more alternative feel to it. Less polished and more emotional than "What I've Become" and "Boys," which are both favorites of mine. Versus those, which sound like they are made for people to listen and buy, "Murder" seems more like the lead single on an Indie Label album.
Track 11 "Never Dream Alone"
This song definitely sounds throatier and much more real than some of her other songs, and is the closest that Ashlee will ever come to a ballad. It is remniscient of her album "I Am Me" and it is at best, raw and emotional.
I enjoyed most of the songs. However, songs like "Ragdoll" sound like dropped tracks that Miley Cyrus thought were boring. "Bittersweet World" doesn't stick in the mind, despite being the title track.
If you like rock that is catchy, unique, and addicting, buy "Bittersweet World." It impressed me- just give this album a chance. Preview the album and listen to some of the songs on youtube, if you want.
