Product Description On the heels of his acclaimed memoir, Never Have Your Dog Stuffed, beloved actor and bestselling author Alan Alda has written Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself, an insightful and funny look at some of the impossible questions he’s asked himself over the years: What do I value? What, exactly, is the good life? (And what does that even mean?) Picking up where his bestselling memoir left off–having been saved by emergency surgery after nearly dying on a mountaintop in Chile–Alda finds himself not only glad to be alive but searching for a way to squeeze the most juice out of his new life. Looking for a sense of meaning that would make this extra time count, he listens in on things he’s heard himself saying in private and in public at critical points in his life–from the turbulence of the sixties, to his first Broadway show, to the birth of his children, to the ache of September 11, and beyond. Reflecting on the transitions in his life and in all our lives, he notices that “doorways are where the truth is told,” and wonders if there’s one thing–art, activism, family, money, fame–that could lead to a “life of meaning.” In a book that is candid, wise, and as questioning as it is incisive, Alda amuses and moves us with his unique and hilarious meditations on questions great and small. Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself is another superb Alan Alda performance, as inspiring and entertaining as the man himself.
From the Hardcover edition.

My opinion December 15, 2008 Don B. Leggat (Phoenix, Arizona) The CD is GREAT. No one is better to listen to than Alan Alda. He's the guy next door or the friend you've known and talked to for years. He tells a story in a way that makes you want to listen and can't wait to find out what comes next. I've bought two of Alan Alda's books on CD and I'm impressed that he is such a great writer and speaker. Amazon.Com does itself proud selling books and audio's of this quality. Don Leggat
Alan Alda, please... December 1, 2008 Fed Up (Call Zone) Love Alan Alda, but this book wasn't what I expected, sadly. A little too much talk about his kids and word for word speeches he's given....
applause applause take a bow! November 12, 2008 Diane L. Overby (MINNESOTA, MN) FIRST I HAVE TO SAY: THE OLDER I GET THE MORE A APPRECIATE "SAME TIME NEXT YEAR"! I COULDN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. I GET THE CREEPY FAN THING, BUT I TOO HAVE TO SAY I'VE ALWAYS ENJOYED YOUR WORK. I KNOW IT SOUNDS SO CLICHE BUT I HAD TO SAY IT! THIS BOOK WAS SO WONDERFUL TO READ I WOULD SCHEDULE AN HOUR EVERY DAY TO JUST TO READ MORE OF IT. ALAN, THANK YOUR FOR ENTERTAINING ME AGAIN! DIANE
Excellent Read September 28, 2008 Max (New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Very smoothly, seamlessly written. Although there are many excerpts from his speeches, the author has also given us a profound, insightful book. Alda'a near death experience, and consequent revelations are a pleasure to read. In highlighting his rocky road to achieving good mental & emotional health, the author must have had the average man/woman in mind.He writes with passion and heart.
