It would take a pretty good argument to deny that Jennifer Lopez is brave--nobody transitions from dance to film to music as boldly or as fluidly--but bravery doesn't factor much into her new disc, despite the title. And that's a good thing. On Brave, JLo busts out a batch of songs that don't challenge pop-appreciative ears--there's no cross-genre experimenting, no political point-making, and no self-serving, overblown ballads. In their place are well turned-out hooks (see "Mile in These Shoes," a song apt to cause ankle injuries in untold numbers of Jimmy Choo owners), bright production ("Hold It Don't Drop It" samples Tavares's groovealicious "It Only Takes a Minute"), and a voice very much in the mood to have a good time. "Stay Together," the opener, sets a happy, beat-heavy tone that holds up all album long--here's Jenny reminding the masses that monogamy need not be a buzz kill: "Stay together, it's the new break-up/Stay together, it's the new trend," she trills, and you believe her. Brave may not be the most groundbreaking record ever to climb the pop charts, but it's enough to convince you JLo's discs don't stint on substance. And it'll raise your pulse, too. --Tammy La Gorce

1 out of 5 stars My first R&B CD purchase   October 26, 2008
Sounds too depressing. I guess all R&B CDs are like that. I will not buy anymore R&B CDs.(I don't know too much about music because I only purchase 4 CDs in my life. kept 3 so far) If I read the wikipedia about R&B before I bought it, I wouldn't bought the CD in the first place.

Every Song Sounds The Same. Same Old Beat, What Happened Girl,Need To Spend More Time With Tempo Changes, Beat Changes, Must Have Put This Together with Little Time And Effort. Sorry Better Luck On Your Next CD.

I was looking for some inspiring driving music. Something fun with a bit of pep. This is an ok album but does not rate as a favorite. I have other albums that most of the songs I love. This has 2... It is currently in my 5 CD holder in the car but I don't think it will stay there.

5 out of 5 stars One of Jennifer Lopez's better English albums...   March 31, 2008
Let me start off with the generally shared universal opinion that Jennifer Lopez isn't exactly the best singer in the music industry. However, her voice does well for what she deals with, which is general catchy pop tunes that use instrumentation and production as hooks and tunes. That said, I find it incredibly dishonest to see so many viewers here who choose to berate, slander, and attack this woman personally without even first listening to the CD. No, Jennifer Lopez isn't the best singer but she tends to have infectious beats and instrumentations to help her push the sugar tune songs along, and that strategy that she propels is no different on this album.

Quite possibly, Jennifer's best English album to date, in terms of the quality of songs, consistency and material she is given. There were only a few songs that didn't win a position on my iPod, but the rest made the final cut into my iPod(keeping in mind my iPod is full of competition from the music of Mozart to the compositions of Yasunori Mitsuda). The album starts off especially strong, with the song "Stay Together", which propels a very catchy, happy, and almost corny, but still great pop tune. "Hold It Don't Drop It" is another highlight of the album, boasting an infectious and disco-esque dance beat that is great for the clubs. "Miles in these Shoes" excels in lyrical quality and overall message, which makes it another highlight of the album.

However, three things should be expressed about the album. First off, the overall genre of this album caught me completely off guard because the lack of dance tunes like those of her past "Waiting For Tonight", which I consider her better English song to date. Jennifer stated during her interviews, regarding this album, that the purchasers of this album were to expect dance, upbeat music. While there were a few dance songs("Hold It Don't Drop It") in the album, the majority of the album consists of bubble gum pop tunes, so those who were expecting dance songs might be a bit disapointed. Second thing that must be addressed is the timeline of most of these songs. The album is a good pop album, but where are the electronica, futuristic influences of "Umbrella" and Justin Timberlake's Futuresex/lovesound instrumentations? Pop music is generally very fickle, and it seems Jennifer's new album hasn't exactly grasped what today's modern day pop sounds like. Bubblegum pop days are generally no more, but Jennifer and her team didn't seem to realize this when fabricating the album. The album is also freer of Spanish influences and sounds, which doesn't come as much of a surprise, since she released a Spanish album just months before she released this album.

Overall, the album is surprisingly good because of its consistency and general lack of fillers. However, the album doesn't keep up with modern day robotic sounds, and dance songs but instead goes back to feel good bubblegum pop throwback, which may or may not be preferred. 4.5/5 stars.
