Of course, you're thinking, when did Dwight not sing Buck? A fine question, since Yoakam built much of his vocal style around that of the late Bakersfield master, and recorded with him on occasion, the two even collaborating on Owens's own work ("Streets of Bakersfield"). So while this collection of Owens covers seems like a project Yoakam should have tackled in the '90s, it took Owens's 2006 death to spur his acolyte to action. Dwight Sings Buck moves briskly for 15 tracks, since 10 of them run under three minutes--in keeping with the length of singles in Buck's heyday of the '60s--though several of Owens's most notable No. 1s are conspicuously absent ("I've Got a Tiger by the Tail," "Waitin' in Your Welfare Line"). Yoakam, who also produced the album, keeps the production shiny, punchy, and faithful to the golden age of honky-tonk (prominent percussion, weepy pedal steel, and jittery, stuttering electric guitars), and to some extent he replicates Don Rich's use of the guitar as a partner to the lead vocal. Yet at times, Yoakam almost comically attempts to duplicate Owens's elongated and dippy vowels ("I Don't Care"), while he also brings a new interpretation to "Together Again," deviating from the strictness of the melody and letting the instrumental ending play out for roughly 90 seconds. Then there is the odd track or two ("Above and Beyond," "Down on the Corner of Love") where Yoakam inserts inflections of another of his heroes, Elvis Presley, to nearly morph the Bakersfield Boss into the Memphis Flash. If several tracks also seem too studied in their smartness, and "Only You," with its funeral-parlor organ, features an excruciatingly tortured vocal, Yoakam finds his best moments when he just, well, acts naturally, as his old pal might say. "Close Up the Honky Tonks," the most compelling performance here, proves that imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but inspiration proves the sweetest gift of all. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Dwight was born to sing Buck   April 17, 2009

Buck is Buck and Dwight is Dwight...but the spin that Dwight puts on Buck's songs is completely worth hearing. I own nearly all of Dwights albums and I live in the Bakersfield area where Buck was (and still is in a lot of ways) a big influence. While I love, love, love to hear the original Buck tunes (thanks to his awesome radio stations), Dwight does amazing justice to Buck with this album. I've seen Dwight sing these live as well and he's awesome there too. If you're a fan of both artists than you're going to love this album! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars DWIGHT YOAKAM: Buck Owens' Pride & Joy   January 30, 2009

I'll keep it short and simple. After seeing[television] and hearing[records/radio]Dwight & Buck divinely harmonizing and co-leading on vocals, while each respectfully held his own, on a few hits & tracks over the past 20 years, DWIGHT had to be BUCK OWENS' musical pride and joy, and the rightful heir to Buck's influential legacy. Buck must've enjoyed the fact that 'somebody out there' other than the record buying fans was LISTENING to his music and being inspired to carry the torch. Buck Owens was one of a kind in music history - nobody else ever sounded nor played music as he did. Dwight Yoakam is also one of a kind, no carbon copy of anybody else, absolutely rare and unique in that he absorbed his musical influences well, bred them in his mind, ears and soul, and molded every ounce into his own distinct, identifiable sound. Dwight does Buck mighty proud, and Mr. Owens is smiling down on his sincere friend.

If you like Buck Owens and if you like Dwight Yoakam, then this is the CD for you. Dwight sings a lot of the great Buck Owens hits, but he puts the Dwight Yoakam twist on them. I was very pleasantly surprised the first time I listened to it.

I'd buy this all over again.Dwight Sings Buck

I loved this album. I also believe Dwight did a sincere and flattering memorial to Buck.

Dwight does a great job reworking these Buck songs. The best one is Tender Lovin' Care. I was so pleased to see that someone gave Buck his do for being a great artist. Buck would be so proud of this album. Thanks Dwight for the hard work. We all appreciate it.
