After a long career as a crossover queen, Gloria Estefan, along with her co-composer-producer husband, Emilio, has been captured in a nostalgic mood. The album's title, 90 Millas (90 Miles), refers to the distance between the couple's ancestral Cuba and their present home in the city of Miami where, first as lead vocalist with the Miami Sound Machine and later as a solo artist, Ms. Estefan became an important figurehead for a large ex-pat community. On this set, she is heard exclusively in Spanish, fronting a superstar line-up of singers and instrumentalists (a partial list would include Paquito d'Rivera, Johnny Pacheco, Israel "Cachao" López, Carlos Santana, José Feliciano, Arturo Sandoval, Sheila E., and movie star and Latin music aficionado Andy García). Her previous three albums performed exclusively in that language, Mi Tierra (1993), Abriendo Puertas (1995), and Alma Caribeña (2000), were each a bit more far-flung stylistically but this opus is Havana all the way. Highlights include the string-backed charanga romance of "Bésame," the high-spirited, "Guantanamera"-like call-and-response of "Refranes," the percussive, brassy frenzy of "Esta Fiesta No Va Acabar," the African influenced "Morenita," and "Volveré," which bears more than a slight melodic resemblance to Cat Stevens' "Wild World." The material is uniformly newly composed, and highly authentic and lilting it is, too. But it would also be wonderful to hear Ms. Estefan interpret a few classic boleros and sons, especially she has long since proven that she is equipped to do so with flying colors. --Christina Roden

1 out of 5 stars Recorded in Spanish but it's not Cuban music   October 3, 2009
    Cuban Music Fan (London)
I'm amazed at the number of people who have left comments that this rather soft, middle-of-the-road piece of American pop music is somehow Cuban music. Yes, it's sung in Spanish - and Ms. Estafan's family came from Cuba - but where's the meat? Which Cuban CD sounds anything like this stuff? Click on the soundfiles on this site for any Cuban musician's recordings and you'll see why.

Having been a pop singer for many years, Gloria has suddenly discovered her Cuban family roots and her parents anti-Castro-ism. I guess it would be too cynical to say if you buy into the American dream, leave your homeland and become an American then there's a musical price to pay....and this rather tepid CD is a testament to that.

3 out of 5 stars A wonderful cultural phenomenon, but the amplitude of sound is way to high, and is distorted.   July 31, 2009
    Tom Brody (Berkeley, CA)
The music on this disc is a wonderous cultural phenomenon. We find congas, lead female vocal, piano, vocal chorus, violin, and brass. FIVE STARS for the music on the album.

In my limited experience with Cuban music, I have found two other albums that can match this one, in terms of authenticity in sound and ability to command sustained interest and attention. These two albums are Afro Cuban All Stars on the World Circuit label (No.: 79476-2) and Tito Puente's album, MAMBO BIRDLAND. I also like Mongo Santamaria's UP FROM THE ROOTS album and AFRO-AMERICAN LATIN albums. These albums provide an array of authentic Cuban sounds (not latinized American pop songs, or relaxing Latin lounge music).

But the sound on the Estefan compact disc is distorted. The sound is imprinted on the compact disc to provide an extremely high volume. Because of this, or perhaps because of some other reason, the sound is fuzzy and distorted throughout the entire Estefan compact disc. To remedy this problem, I found that I could turn down the volume control on the compact disc player (you should turn it down to 5 or lower) and turn up the volume on your amplifier. I own 1000 compact discs, and have only encountered distortion on only two other discs, one a BEST OF THE ZOMBIES on the "Best of the 60's" label, and the other Martha and the Vandellas THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION.

I bought the Estefan album on Amazon.com from the little button that allows purchasing from private sellers. The disc was new, but it was for sale for under one dollar. My guess is that a batch of disc pressings was poorly made by the manufacturer, resulting in the distorted sound, and somehow these entered the marketplace. Alternatively, it might be that the disc is a counterfeit. At any rate, I am glad that I discovered the volume-fiddling trick as a way to eliminate the distortion problem.

Points off for this album's rating because of the distorted sound. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

5 out of 5 stars This is another introducation to Cuban music!!   December 16, 2008

Gloria returns to her Cuban roots with this authentic album. It is just as good, if not better than her 1992 album, "Mi Tierra." It is one of my favorite Latin albums that incorporates all the Cuban instruments with a few Hip-Hop undertones. For example, her first song has a Cuban beat, but adds some Hip-Hop bass to it that is incredible and creative! She also adds a few slow boleros and bachata. You will thoroughly enjoy this album if you are a lover of Latin music!
