Amazon.com Judging by the themes of anger and betrayal that dominate Kelly Clarkson's third disc, My December, perhaps 'Jagged Little Idol' would have been a more telling title. According to interviews, the massively successful artist wanted more creative control with her music going forward; as a result, unlike her previous CDs, Clarkson contributes as a songwriter on every track. The final product is not nearly as catchy as Breakaway, but is far more introspective and honest. My December's overall sound brings a harder musical style than fans might expect, with acerbic lyrics to match; the disc's first single "Never Again"--a dark rock song slamming her ex-boyfriend--is certainly a tip-off. The compelling chorus of "Hole" finds Clarkson singing "There's a hole/inside of me/it's so damn cold/slowly killing me" over a melody that is far more Tool than top-40. "Haunted" and "Judas" are wrought-over tracks that veer into Evanescence territory, while the wonderfully sparse "Maybe" is a highlight within which Clarkson's pleading voice is perfectly showcased. My December's final listed track, "Irvine" (prior to the hidden bluesy acoustic ballad "Chivas") sounds far more Cat Power-meets-Corinne Bailey Rae than Clarkson, but it is certainly one of the most captivating songs on the disc, and serves as yet another reminder of just how versatile her voice is. Fans of her previous radio-friendly releases may well be divided on her new direction, but it appears to be the path Clarkson is likely to continue to travel. --Denise Sheppard More from Kelly Clarkson Breakaway | Thankful | Since U Been Gone |

Its Kelly Clarkson January 20, 2010 Kallen Ok I am going to say I didnt LOVE Kelly Clarkson when she was on Idol, and when Thankful came out I thought it was bad, and then Breakaway I thought she sold out, but loved the CD and the songs just thought she would be another artist that would just make bubble gum pop songs for radio and success.
So when i heard Never Again i totally loved it, but still thought that her new cd was going to be the same pop junk as Breakaway. So once never again left the radio i offed kelly and had not heard from her in a while and figured her album was an epic fail and went on with life not wasting my time to even listen to the album, until I got out of a really bad relationship and didnt know what to do and was so hurt and could barely live each day, and my friend gave me the cd and said listen from the beginning and all the way to the end and OMFG!!!!!!!!! That is when i feel majorly hardcore in love with kelly clarkson!!!
The CD is so raw, so full of emotion so much pain and meaning in every song, and then i find out she wrote or co wrote every song on there i was stunned!! I mean Sober, and Maybe have got to be the best songs i have EVER heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So no this is not the same kelly that is all sweet and kind and the same little girl on thankful and breakaway, she is SO much more this CD proves that! And i feel bad for the people that do not understand that she was hurt by her ex and she needed to cope with it by singing and writing and she wanted other people to know what she was going threw and have other people know that they are not alone so it is horrible that people think that this was a terrible album and she lost it when the fact is she just proved that she is way above anyone in the music industry in todays music so yes if ur looking for her pop side then go with Thankful, Breakaway, All I Ever Wanted, but My December i think will always be Kellys Golden Album!!
Underrated Masterpiece August 22, 2009 Matthew M. Shea (burbank, ca) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Don't listen to the media...Don't base judgement of a work on how many radio friendly singles it has...this is THE BEST Kelly Clarkson Album by FAR!!! I'll equate it to a really amazing independent film that has the same director and writer and hasn't been spoiled by having too many studio cooks in the kitchen. Kelly bares her soul on this album...singing about the delusions of this transitory world and everyone's struggle to find find true meaning and happiness beyond the delusion. It is full of vulnerability and truth, and whether she intended it or not..it is a deeply spiritual experience to listen to it as she sings about the universal struggles that we all must face. This is an a amazing work of art and just like a Van Gogh painting, this CD will be appreciated in the years to come as the Masterpiece that it is...And like all great works of art, it rings the bell of truth about who we truly are. Please, Please record companies...give this girl the complete artistic control she deserves because she is brilliant and by interfering in the artistic process you are interfering with the purity of Spirit that flows thru her to the listener. Amen Kelly!
Disappointing August 8, 2009 Melissa E. Williams (Louisville, KY USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I really couldn't make it through this CD more than twice. I really wanted to like it, but the songs just weren't good. Her current album sounds good so far so I won't hold this one against her.
THE BEST SHE HAS DONE.....hands down!!!!!! July 21, 2009 Marcus (So California) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the only Album of Kelly's that sounds as if it came from a TRUE artist....it isn't RADIO WATERED down...like her first two albums....this ALBUM truly rocks....forget her newest one and go with this one instead.....Her newest album is HORRIBLE....she took about 10 steps backwards with "All I Ever Wanted" What was she thinking? "My December" is utterly perfect and beautiful....she should have keep going down that road as ANY true artist would have done....She shouldn't have listened to all the nay-sayers.....They just can't STEP outside of their boxes for a second and stop buying into "oh if it's isn't played on the radio it must not be good" Start thinking for your self for a second or two.
"My December" is Kelly's Masterpiece! She has it all wrong on "All I Ever Wanted".
Kelly please revisit the sound and POWER of "My December".
Different, But Still Potent Clarkson Record June 19, 2009 Terence Allen (Atlanta, GA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
"My December" is definitely a departure for Kelly Clarkson. The original American Idol has up to this point given us bouncy pop-rock beats and sweet ballads.
This time, Clarkson veers into the wronged-woman category that has become its own sub-genre of popular music. Backed by a hard-edged beat on many of the cuts, Clarkson sings with anger and rage to heartless lovers and the results are entertaining, if not what you would have expected.
Songs like "Irvine," "Judas," "Never Again," "Hole," and "Sober, and others, point to a young woman struggling to find love and acceptance from a man. While there are some playful songs, such as "Can I Have A Kiss?," these songs break so much of the previous Clarkson mold that it proved to be too much for many of her fans. However, even if it can be argued that these songs would have been better off mixed into several records with her usual fare (and this argument has merit), these songs are still well-written, well-produced, well-played, and of course, well-sung.
My December may not end up being Kelly Clarkson's most popular record, but at least for now, it is, ironically, her most talked about record.
