On its fifth album, Static X mines its familiar Prong-meets-Ministry sound to convincing effect over the course of twelve tracks of industrial metal darkness. Because the band's name alone makes comparisons to the likes of White Zombie, Korn, and Slipknot redundant, it's instead worth noting that Cannibal is arguably the group's leanest, most direct-sounding, and most metal album to date. And, if this album is a harbinger of the outfit's future ventures, then listeners are in for a eye-popping ride. Wayne Static and his cohorts are perhaps most effective on the stomping "Cuts You Up," the dark and discoesque "Behemoth," and the grand executioner of them all, "Destroyer." Still, the record suffers a bit for its intentions of brutality. The hit-and-run approach of Static's songwriting means that none of the tracks reach the four-minute mark and thus come off as vignettes rather than fully realized narratives. All in all, Cannibal may be the album that detractors and fans alike have been waiting for, the one that proves that Static means to take us on a longer and more interesting journey than we could have ever imagined. --Jedd Beaudoin

 Rapid fire industrial techno metal mayhem! November 11, 2009

Static-X is one of those bands whose relentless techno-tinged musical style and delivery just does it for me every time. It grabs your attention and doesn't let up. The songs are ferocious, fast, pounding and highly addictive. Standout tracks are, Behemoth, Destroyer, Forty Ways, Chroma-Matic, Electric Pulse and Goat. Awesome stuff!

Being in Static X must suck. As one reviewer put it, every time they branch out from the typical "metal/screeching vocals" they get pegged as a sell-out. Let a band grow and diversify...until I see Wayne Static peddling hair care products - (or butter, as I recently saw Johnny Rotten doing) - lets just call Static X "experimenting" - not selling out.
As for "Cannibal" - its great. Imagine Rob Zombie melded with Slayer...Death Disco is what these guys claim, and what they continue to pump out. High quality, aggressive music supplemented with electronics and break-beats.
I'm glad to hear with the album they just recently released "Cult of Static" that they continued with this genre.

There are some idiots on here commenting. There's a guy named Brock Compton or "REAL METAL". Apparently, he proceeded to review this album saying things like "they're metal wannabes" and "this isn't real metal", but fails to explain or elaborate as to why this is so. If you read all of his reviews, you'll see that he reviews the new Breaking Benjamin cd and calling it "real metal". Now i think they are a good band with talent, but calling them metal and Static-X not metal, well that's just like saying Nickelback is death metal and In Flames is Alternative. Now to the cd, Great album from an ever-evolving band, and Wayne Static continues to suprise with his rough yet clean vocals. The guitar solos are another addition, showcasing the band's real talent from what used to sound like a bit of korn-esque riffs.
Nothing Like Their Older Stuff. August 21, 2008

Ok, I really like their older CD's quite a lot. This sounds basically nothing like their older stuff (except maybe the track "Behemoth") The techno is gone, the softer melodies are gone, they have added guitar solo's, which are pretty decent, and it seems like they're trying to be more metal, which is great. But their are some flaws in this album. It's pretty repetitive. Most songs only have about 2 riffs in them and that's it. What saves this album from getting 2 stars is the guitar solos. Koichi did a great job with them. But their are some very catchy tunes on this album, such as "Destroyer" "Cannibal" and "Chroma-Matic" The drummer did a great job on this album, what's really lacking is the guitar parts. Their needs to be more than 2 riffs for a song. especially with no techno or anything to help build the song. I'd give this 3.5/5 stars. But I'm just going to give it 4 instead since I can't.
I'm hoping for their next CD to have more riffs if they're trying to take all the techno out of their music. Still looking forward to their next release.
