Katharine McPhee has a cloudless voice and a warm, wide-eyed Alice in Wonderland quality that won her swarms of fans on American Idol's fifth season--if Simon Cowell had a ready antonym for "ghastly," there's little room for doubt about which contestant he would have applied it to. While debates over whether McPhee's considerable grace and talent should have won her the TV competition rage on across the Idol-viewing landscape, one thing's certain: she's made a debut album good enough to render such determinations meaningless. Katharine McPhee is an R&B-leaning pop disc that pulls the urgency and tenderness out of her voice and pins it smack in the center of each song. The slickly produced opener "Love Story" displays a certain swagger, and "Not Ur Girl" and "Open Toes" follow it up with still more spunk and attitude (something some McPhans asked to see more of on AI). If there's a crisp, smartly maneuvered Christina Aguilera-meets-Beyoncé-and-Mariah sensibility at work in those songs, the ballads belong to McPhee alone. "Somewhere over the Rainbow" made her a star on TV; "Ordinary World" and "Better off Alone" have the staying power to make her a star in music. --Tammy La Gorce

1 out of 5 stars Horrifyingly Awful   November 10, 2009

She's a pretty girl who proved she can sing, yet this is an unmitigated disaster. No wonder she was quickly dropped by her label. Blame half the problem Kara DioGuardi who has yet to discover that most good songs need, oh, I dunno, a melodic line. Here's some advice: Katherine, stop trying to be a warmed-up version of Beyonce or Mariah, find music that isn't insipid retreads of others, and carve your own niche. You deserve better.

    3 out of 5 stars :(:(ew...   October 18, 2009
Stars are so depressing lately. she is really pretty, she has a good voice, but she likes to wear immodest clothes. 'open toes' is a cute song but with some suggestive themes, like flirting in her miniskirt and putting herself above everything else. 'love story' is a sweet song, but the music video is horrible. And more than gross, it's just plain wierd. Call me conservative, but i don't care for plunging necklines, shortSHORT skirts, and some of the other themes in this album. She sang 'Connected' in Barbie and the Diamond Castle and that's where i heard of her :0)

Wow! I never watch American Idol but maybe I should! I heard this artist on the House Bunny Sountrack and googled her immediately. I liked what I heard to buy the album and it is so worth it! From the first track to the last, there is something on this album for everyone, no matter the gender, race or station in life! Her voice is so full of soul! I am impressed and look forward to future albums!

    2 out of 5 stars Hmm...   September 5, 2009

This album is very ordinary, Pretty conservative and very predictable. These songs are all drab for the most part. Sounds too much like Danity Kane's stuff and it's not creative. The beats are all average, the lyrics have all been sang before by someone else. It's just not a FUN or interesting album. No Pop/Rock, No Electronica, No FUN just plain and simple RNB songs with a subtle Hip-Hop undertone that you can get from Jordin Sparks, Pussycat Dolls, Fergie and so on and so forth. However I must admit I like 4 out of the 12 songs here. "Each Other" "Everywhere I Go" "Over It" & "Open Toes", RNB tends to be the least fun of the music genre's to me unless the vocals are superior. The four songs in which I mentioned all showcase Katharine's vocals really well. They're typical RNB songs like Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" "Don't Forget About Us" or Usher's "Let It Burn", Ya Know those generic winded down RNB songs that everyone sings, But I must say I was captivated by her vocal performance. "Open Toes" is an upbeat song that most would play on their way to the club. Sounds exactly like something from Danity Kane's first album, It would not be out of place- But once again her vocals are really nice. I love the pace of the song and how she sings it. Overall this album is a little too generic for my taste, It's not soulful, It's not anything special, It's very BASIC/Very Average. There's not much appeal within this album. RNB fanatics will take to this album really well or if you're not too picky about what you listen to i'm sure it can be fair... Maybe

1 out of 5 stars Great Face, Great Voice, poor Album   May 30, 2009

I listened through the album one time and doubt if I will listen to it again. I only paid $2.39 plus shipping so no big lose. This is all I have heard of Kat's music (except for the single song on "Chris Botti in Boston" DVD/CD). Maybe she has recorded something else that I would like. Let's face it she has the voice and the looks to be a great star, but not with this type of material. I am not a fan of mechanical music and I hear a lot of that on this album. Below are my ratings.

Katharine: (10) for voice and knock-out beauty.

Songs: (Score 3 of 10) I only like one of the songs and it contained foul language. The quality of songs do not match the talent in the voice.

Music: (Score 1 of 10) Too computerized and lacking dynamics. The background vocals are too loud which covers up Kat's voice. Cookie cutter modern pop which is not my favorite music style. I like something with emotion (Soul, R&B, Blues or Jazz).

CD Artwork: (Score 9 of 10) I would have given it a 10 but the fonts are too small and too dark to read. The pictures of Kat are great but some could have been printed larger. Also the tracks were not number in the booklet you will need the case to know what song is playing.

Production: (Score 9 of 10) The CD does not have CD-Text and it should have. Great that you do get 12 songs and not the normal 10.

    To Katharine I say:
Good first effort but you have a long way to go. Due to your voice and your wonderful looks I will continue collecting your albums. Please look for some better material and get a live band with some musicians that can play their instruments. You may even want to take a trip to Muscle Shoals, Alabama and record your next album at FAME Recording Studio using some of our seasoned soul side men (The Swampers). Stay away from country music but venture into real 70's R&B, Soul or even standards. You sounded GREAT on the Chris Botti in Boston DVD/CD. That's your groove!
You do have a gift and you are blessed as your "thanks you" comments say. May God continue to bless and guide your career!
