    Product Description
Jimi Hendrix (1942 1970) is without doubt the most significant guitarist in rock history. His career was short, but to this day no one has taken his place. Hendrix is the great legend of rock guitarists. For the first time ever, this book introduces the complete legendary Mankowitz photo sessions with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the trio founded in 1966 by Hendrix, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. Chas Chandler, Hendrix's manager, asked the popular photographer Mankowitz to portray the Experience early in 1967.The young Gered Mankowitz had already made quite a reputation for himself as a photographer capable of tapping right into the personality of the person he portrayed, and his images conveyed that sense profoundly. With these particular sessions, Mankowitz helped create the visual trademarks that the trio came to rely on; he also assisted Hendrix in finding a sublime and exotic image entirely of his own. These pictures show Hendrix to be forceful, confident, yet also sensitive and thoughtful an exceptional personality at the peak of his growth.Just by using simple black-and-white photography, Mankowitz succeeded in creating the icon that was to become Jimi Hendrix. Altogether, only 96 images were taken during the two sessions, but these really are something. The book is published as a larger-than-usual coffee table book (10.5x14.5 inches approx.). The print is on premium 200g paper, using duotone printing in FM-raster scan and allowing for excellent image quality. Individually designed coloured book end paper, a coated cover, a decorative slipcase well, this is a polygraphic gem!

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful collector's work   January 25, 2008

For anyone interested in Hendrix and his early career, this book is really valuable. What sets it apart from the dozens of books about Hendrix is the insight of the photographer, who understood the difference between the private persona and the need for a public image which inevitably could be at odds with the person behind it, and the sense of being there when history was in the making.

The narrative, in which Mankowitz reveals how he gets the best out of his subjects, is nearer to the real character of Hendrix, Redding and Mitchell than you will get from any other book. As the photo shoot unfolds, the insights into Hendrix' natural personality is a historic document and something every fan should have.

The end result is of course some beautiful portraits of an up and coming performer, but its unembellished style strips it of pretension and the later effects of a successful career. It is virtually a window into reality, away from all the hype and imagery which has been laid on so thick over the last 30 years.

The book brings Hendrix so closely into focus that one feels the photo shoot could have happened just this morning.

5 out of 5 stars Jimi in London   July 27, 2006

Gered Mankowitz, the famous British photographer, was very young himself when he first encountered Jimi Hendrix and his band, The Experience. He invited them to two studio sessions which were to become very decisive in shaping the image of Jimi and his band.

You can tell by looking at these photos that Jimi was still trying to find the best way to deal with the media, he tries on a variety of personae, all of them intriguing.

What I really like about this book apart from the quality and intensity of the images is the presentation - the layout is great, the printing very good, and the slipcase looks classy.

I keep on coming back to this book discovering new stuff all the time, it is just really fascinating for a fan.
