    Amazon.com Review
Movie fans can argue the merits of Rocky vs. Rambo, but no one can accuse Sylvester Stallone of being a couch potato. In Sly Moves, Stallone recounts the training methods that turned him into one of the true Hollywood hard-bodies of all time, tailoring the best and worst of what he s learned from forty years in the gym and testing trendy diets into a simple (3-hour-a-week) workout/eating program anyone can follow.

Stallone mixes in plenty of personal tales from his storied career along with practical advice, including a three-day look inside the life of an action hero approaching age 60: what he eats, when he works out, what famous people he bumps into at his private Beverly Hills gym and the L.A. hot spots where he does dinner. Sly might help you tighten up those abs with three kinds of crunches, but odds are the new six pack won t get you a table next to him at Spago. Still, all the trappings of celebrity aside, you only have to check out the photos of him demonstrating his "Rambo pulldowns," "Rocky chins," or other exercises ("moves") he recommends to see he knows a thing or two about staying fit. As for how to "gain will power" and "live your dream," you could do a lot worse than listen to a guy of humble beginnings who willed himself into everything he ever dreamed of becoming one hammer curl at a time. --Patrick Jennings

    Product Description

Are you ready to be a contender? Sylvester Stallone's action–oriented program for getting fit and eating right is also a revealing portrait of one of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Sly Moves is more than just a handbook on fitness and nutrition. It's a provocative and candid inside look at the trials and triumphs of one of Hollywood's most famous stars. Throughout his career, Sly has always been body conscious, and as he experimented with intense training methods for various films, he has learned – often the hard way – what works and what definitely doesn't. His goal here is to help readers change harmful fitness habits, learn to counter reckless eating, and appreciate who they are even when they don't feel much like action heroes.

Part 1 is a history of Sylvester Stallone's physique, as the Rocky star shares stories about his being bullied as a child, finding comfort and strength at the gym, and then later, the wild ride of fad diets, crash–training regimens and workout disasters that fringed on obsession.

Part 2, The Sly Moves workout, outlines four exercise programs: classic, advanced, women's and hardcore. The workouts only require a commitment of about three hours a week (exactly the same amount of time Sly works out).

The Sly Moves eating plan (Part 3) is Sly's nutrition guide, highlighted by a unique meal plan for a lifetime of good eating.

Part 4 gives Sly an opportunity to inspire and encourage readers to make Sly Moves part of a long–term picture of health, fitness and wellbeing, with tips on everything from keeping goals and relaxation techniques to lessons learned from The Contender.

    5 out of 5 stars A truly "Proven" program...   June 19, 2009
    Jeremiah Courter (USA)
I won't spend time listing all the qualities of the book, since other reviewers have already done so. What is important to note about this phenomenal book is its simplicity. Stallone takes a tour of his life from bottom to the top while explaining what he has learned about bodybuilding over the 40 years he has trained. Being now 60 and having been a part of bodybuilding that extended 40 years ago where people smoked in the gym (Stallone said so himself), Stallone pours out what he learned that worked...and what did not. Moreoever, Stallone understands that 90% of Americans don't have the time nor want to have to dedicate 10+ hours of their lives to the gyms to have an amazing body.

What Stallone reveals in this book is how you can reach your goals and only need to go to the gym 3-4 hours a week! He states very plainly that 3 1/2 hours is all he currently does and any snapshot of Stallone today shows a 60 year old man who looks phenomenal. Stallone makes a list of what he eats in his typical day (including his "splurge" day) and what his workout consists with visual pictures. And like I said, his approach is very simple and he is down to earth with what he shares, and it is truly hard to argue with someone who has 40 years of experience on his belt.

Lastly, one of the best parts of the books for me is how he doesn't "diet". He makes a list of common diets used today and shows their various flaws. The main flaw he points out is that when people go on rigid diets, they aren't learning how they will eventually eat when they are no longer on the diet. Hence why many gain weight after they get off their Jenny Craig or Atkins. I know from personal experience that this is true. After losing 50 pounds I eventually gained it all back, because I didn't develop a "lifestyle" of healthy eating, only a temporary restricted diet. Stallone then proceeds to explain how the best thing we can do for ourselves in regards to our eating habits is moderation and disciplining oneself for their splurge day.

As such, this has been the single most helpful "exercise" book I have ever read. Not to mention you get to read this all while he explains his story of success and his ongoing dedication to staying fit. Seeing what he currently looks like at 60 and reading all that he had to go through to be where he is at now, leaves the reader truly inspired and ready when they close the book.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing!   March 3, 2009

As a big gym body, I am always looking for good advice for working out and getting stronger, loosing weight, what to eat and what not to eat, typical stuff. I'm a huge fan of pretty much anything involving Sylvester Stallone, and watch the Rocky movies a lot. I was watching Rocky IV one day and started thinking "Ya know, with the body and back story of Ole Sly, I wander if he ever wrote a book." So I looked here and found this book and bought it immediately! Since a started with this book, I've never felt stronger, I've never felt this good about myself, and I've already lost about 12 pounds! and I've probably only owned it for a couple weeks!

I don't believe in a "perfect method" and honestly there was only one workout that I didn't already know in this book. But basically it's the perfect road map! If your a gym body like me then there will be a lot in this book that's familiar but the methods that this books says to apply will get you feeling stronger and bigger even if you just work out once a week! There's even methods for women to use!
Aside from the gym stuff, there are a lot of things for everyday life that makes you think in very positive ways, and a list of foods and menus you can try and stick to and they aren't even diets.

So all in all, I think this book is amazing and worth every single star!

5 out of 5 stars Men and Women: PLEASE judge this book by its cover   March 3, 2009

Sly has written one of the best books, for men and women, that I have ever read on the subject of WELLNESS. This is so much more than a diet book or an exercise book. Sly is a "hands on" author who shares with his reader what he has tried that didn't work...and what he has tried that did work. While I respect all those who make a study of diet and exercise, Sly's approach is from what he learned by his own trials and errors. In so doing, Sly adds his own personality, humor and life perspective. He gives each reader so many "quotable quotes" in the process. It is inspiring and readers will be the recipient of his inspiration.

1 out of 5 stars Sly is on GROWTH HORMONE, this book is a lie   December 22, 2008

OK. Everyone knows that Stallone got busted for having Growth Hormone on him recently. He didnt get his body because he did the things in this book, he got them by juicing up!! Sly is just a cheater, doing the easy thing and juicing up instead of working out. This book is lame, because Sly is a cheater and a liar.

5 out of 5 stars He knows what he's talking about.   October 5, 2008

This billion-dollar diet book industry is a sham. Mr. Stallone's book speaks the truth. You don't need to count points, or cut out ice-cream, or only eat meat. Who among us really wants to do any of that? Who here really wants to never eat pizza again? And in this book, he shows you you don't have to adhere to these silly diet notions. For that matter, no one really wants to be on a diet. You just have to eat sensibly (aka no pint of Ben & Jerry's every day) and you have to exercise. It's a shame more of the big media (like Oprah) decided not to help promote this line of thinking!
