Amazon.com Nobody knows heartache like Mary J. knows heartache. But as she releases her seventh disc, perhaps more important is that nobody understands better how unquenchable our thirst to hear what it sounds like can be. The Breakthrough, contrary to run-up rumors, is no retrospective or greatest-hits package. Rather than reheat, Blige and producers Dr. Dre, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Will.i.am tasked themselves with stirring a river of hurt into some of the highest-caliber hip-hop/soul to hit the airwaves since she burned up the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack with "Not Gon' Cry." Cameos alone could sell this disc: Brook, Jay-Z, Raphael Saadiq, and Bono step up. But it's the trademark ragged-edged soul of its star that shines brightest throughout the 16 tracks. "A love that tears you down ain't really love," a laid-bare Blige reminds us on "Ain't Really Love," after dedicating "Good Woman Down" to "my troubled sisters." Somewhere in between, she leaves absolutely no room for doubt that she just can't be without her baby ("Be Without You"). It's an exhilarating, love-affirming moment on a CD jammed full of them (check out "Can't Get Enough," with its echoes of a pleading Curtis Mayfield). Blige, never far from the thoughts of the lovelorn, didn't need a breakthrough, but anybody with an ear for artful confession will be glad she's given us The Breakthrough anyway. --Tammy La Gorce

All Hail Mary Queen Of The Breakthrough February 5, 2010 Andre S. Grindle (Brewer Maine) Here's another example how over hyping an album turned me away from it to a degree. Nevertheless I just finally gave it a chance and first off I have to say it's a far more inspired album overall than her previous release to this Love & Life. That's not to say they don't have they're similarities. Songs such as "Enough Cryin" and "Gonna Breakthrough" are heavy on the rap, both featuring Brook but that isn't a bad thing because both songs are really strong, funky and dancable hip-hop soul/funk. Same story goes "About You" with Will I Am and "No One Will Do". One thing that might settle differently with other listeners about this album is the numerous lyrical references to what she's "been through" and how she came over them to let us now about it empowered her. Not a bad thing at all on the surface but if your aware of Mary J's career thus far it's a concept she's by this point long ago worn into the ground so she was more than repeating herself on that note considering that was the entire concept of No More Drama when you got right down to it. Three of the most impressive songs on this album are "Good Woman Down,"Can't Hide From Luv" and "Can't Get Enough"-all of which showcase a strong grounding in the Chicago funk/soul style that grounded Mary J's music in it's 70's based tradition for quite awhile at this point and they are part of the glue that holds this album together. On "MJB Da MVP" she's actually looking back on her musical past and talking of how her career moves. And on we go to the last part of the album where her whole outlook comes to an important conclusion. "I Found Everything" brings in Raphael Saadiq in for a gospel/soul tune that owes a lot to Mary's connection witht eh late 60's Aretha Franklin Atlantic era recordings. "Father In You" and "Alone" again dip into the funk, not just in terms of music but against lyrical ideas about semi-Freudian relationships revolving around men. "Father In You" strikes a very important chord with me because how similarly it relates to someone I know who's had similar experiences. Of course this also contains "One",a duet with U2 and although it's an very compelling hybrid of both of their dramatic musical styles. Even if,considering the fact Bono in particular seemed to be everywhere during this period the concept seemed all too obvious. This is kind of a new beginning for Mary J. In the end I still have to say though that My Life and Mary are still her finest overall recorded achievements thus far.
Mary J's best record ever!!!! December 16, 2008 F. Robbins This by far, is Mary J. Blidge's best album ever! I enjoyed almost every song on this cd. It is an inspiring piece of work that R&B fans will enjoy!
The only "Breakthrough" You'll ever need October 5, 2008 hunibrwn After this CD, what more do you need. I was impressed and I can honestly call her the reigning "Queen" of hip-hop soul. Mary showed her maturity, progression, hurt, love and pain. After you show all of yourself the way Mary did there is nothing left to do but receive your breakthrough and move forward. This CD is a classic and I wish that I would have bought it a lot sonner than I did!
A true breakthrough May 12, 2008 Rosilyn Dodson (USA) this is a really good album. Mary is happy but not corny like on "Love and Life" by far one of her worst albums ever besides share my world. This album shows Mary being very motherly, friendly and shes doing alot of soul bearing in these songs. I can really feel her on this album like I could on the Mary album and we all felt No more drama.
