Amazon.com For saboteurs of records that sound good because of elements completely unrelated to the artist, Ashlee Simpson's sophomore effort, I Am Me, may well be a dream disc. The production is a tight-wrapped, A-type achievement and, with sounds running from hip-hop (the unstoppably infectious "L.O.V.E.") to vintage '80s (the lusty "Dancing Alone") to Synchronicity-era Sting (the energetic, pulsing "Boyfriend") to airwave-friendly ballads that sister Jessica might have choked her way through ("Catch Me When I Fall"), the music sucks you in more reliably than a bagless Dyson. But instead of Ashlee Simpson, credit for both those things - really, for the way this disc favorably insinuates itself into a listener's head overall - belongs to producer/keyboardist/bassist/guitarist John Shanks. Ardent Ashlee-ites, of course, will beg to differ, and they won't be without their points: In addition to co-writing each of these 11 songs, some of which ("Beautifully Broken," a response to her "Saturday Night Live" lip-synching debacle) are more sophisticated than others ("Burnin' Up," a Madonna-reminiscent, reggae-style romp), she sings in a voice as artfully burnished and appealing as it was on her 2004 debut. She makes you want to la la all over again, and for that, and for finding the right guy to orchestrate this acknowledgment-heavy jewel, you've got to like her. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description UK pressing features two bonus tracks, 'Kicking And Screaming' and 'Fall in Love with Me'. This is Ashlee's sophomore album and the follow-up to Autobiography. Features the lead-off single 'Boyfriend'. 13 tracks in total. Universal. 2005.
Album Details Ashlee Simpson Returns with her Second Album "i Am Me". Produced by John Shanks, it Follows 2004's Debut Album Autobiography which Achieved Global Sales of Five Million Copies and Spawned the Massive Hits "Pieces of Me" and "la La". The Album was also One of the Top 10 Best Sellers in America in 2004. Simpson Became a Global Star in the Footsteps of her Older Sister Jessica and Had her Own Hit MTV Series as Well as Starring in Smash Us Show Seventh Heaven.

Jealous? January 5, 2010 Trisha R. Jealous? Not really. Just puzzled and deeply annoyed.
I can't answer for others, but what annoys me is that there are LOTS of other, far more talented people who will NEVER get the promotion and publicity they deserve. (And I'm NOT talking about myself or any members of my family.) When someone with no discernable talent whatsoever gets this kind of insane saturation promotion by the record industry, it's a fair question to ask why. There are girls at my local high school who can sing and dance and play guitar much better that Ashlee can. So, like an earlier reviewer asked, WHY HER?
ALBUM OF THE YEAR FOR ME-I LOVE THIS SINGER August 30, 2009 Arthur G. Decker (Woodstock, Georgia United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I think it is a shame when people are missing out on an AMAZING talent. I do NOT understand why Ashlee Simpson is NOT a Global superstar. This CD has it all-great rock, great singing, great songs, the music flows together & it ends with one of the best pop songs I have ever heard " Say Goodbye ". I hope the world ( especially folks here in the US ) wake up-and get into this singer. To me she is the only current female pop star that I listen to regularly. Of course Mary J. Blige can sing great also-but she does NOT do enough of the right type of songs for me. But when she covers a Terry Reid song like " Stay With Me Baby " or that U2 song " One "-she can blow away anybody!!!!

Ashlee Simpson...where do I begin? First off, this is pure 100% the bubbliest of bubble gum sugary sweet POP. She tries soooo hard to be raw and edgy and fails so miserably at it, it's like watching her on SNL all over again. It's amazing her label didn't drop her sorry self entirely after the lip synch heard 'round the world, but lucky for her, she's got Daddy and Sissy paying her record company to keep her. Just sampling the first few tracks shows you what this album is all about: Ashlee trying so desperately to prove to everyone that 1) She is NOT like her sister 2) She is a hard core "rocker" and 3) She CAN sing. Unfortunately for you Ashlee, you don't have me or many other's on this site who have reviewed your self indulgence of an album fooled. You DO sing crappy music just like your sister, you're not by any means a hard core rocker, and above all you CAN'T sing. No matter how hard you try, you'll never be what you so desperately and pathetically want everyone to think you are.
Underrated, and for All the Wrong Reasons January 11, 2008 Cabir Davis 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Granted an Ashlee Simpson record isn't likely to rate very highly on critics' charts, but its too easy to dismiss this as yet another one-star album from the Simpson clan. For the record, I did think Jessica Simpsons' last effort "A Public Affair" was perhaps the most disgusting thing ever put to record before Nicole Scherzinger went solo, so when you compare this album to anything by Jessica, its evident that this one has its' merits.
"I Am Me" is one of those artificial 'pop-rock' albums that rely completely on production rather than its' lead vocalist. Frankly, I couldn't care less if Ashlee Simpson can sing or not - I just want good singalong music that I can put on repeat. On that front alone, this is a very solid album. I would say that this compares quite favorably to Britney Spears' "Blackout", another derided album that is actually quite listenable.
The three best tracks here make up for some of the more filler moments on the CD. The best cut is the massively overlooked single "L.O.V.E", which really is the best thing Ashlee has done. The first single "Boyfriend" is a faux-rock stomper that I would easily recommend over anything by Lavigne, and the sultry "Burning Up" oozes a 1980s vibe, in a very Madonna meets Sheena Easton way (this is a good thing).
If you listen to your music based on who's singing it, then you're probably never even going to venture towards this. However, if you're looking for a fun album that you listen to endlessly and sing along to, then this is the album for you. I am quite surprised at all the negative reviews here because this is indeed a fantastic, purchase-worthy record.
Four Stars.
Low Rating? Oh yeah, I forgot it's cool to hate Ashlee Simpson October 23, 2007 Jordan Lester (Louisiana, USA) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am so sick of so many good albums having low ratings just because the people that review the albums on here goes with the stigma of "hating" Ashlee, or Britney, or Paris Hilton, or Courtney Love. The album is FANTASTIC, and the only reason it has a low rating is because people hate Ashlee. But the CD itself is very great. So don't listen to these people that are judgmental and dumb.
