Amazon.com After supplying something known as "additional music" to many films since the late 1990s, Steve Jablonsky seems to have become the go-to composer for director-producer Michael Bay. Jablonsky's score for Bay's sci-fi thriller The Island shows the influence of its producer, Hans Zimmer. "The Island Awaits You" sets up the mood, which is oddly muted for a movie directed by explosion-master Bay. Even a track titled "Mass Vehicular Carnage" is merely ominously low-key, oddly sounding like something by dank trip-hopper Tricky. Elsewhere, the electronic number "Starkweather" successfully creates a feeling of oppressive tension before integrating elements of the main theme. Unfortunately, in his effort to avoid big ka-booms, Jablonsky can be overly subdued; while nothing is jarring, nothing makes much of an impression either. Actually, there is one jarring thing on this CD, and it's the Prom Kings' nu metal/funk hybrid "Blow," tacked on at the end like an afterthought. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

A bit typical... February 2, 2010 B. Lloyd (Florida) This is another Steve Jablonsky soundtrack which has Hans Zimmer written all over it (a given, since he and his workshop produced it). Granted, it has some unique moments and does a good job of building a post-modern atmosphere (which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 3), but its most famous track ("My Name Is Lincoln," track 14) reeks of "Gladiator" and the like. Also, it has two tracks I consider a detriment: "Mass Vehicular Carnage" (track 7) and "Blow" (track 15) are band songs, and (in my humble opinion) poor ones at that. Again, there are interesting moments and some generic action tracks, so don't write it off entirely, but it's nothing amazing or that you'd want to go out of your way for. It also credits the full orchestra and many other contributers in the cover booklet, though no names for the choir are listed. Interestingly, Ramin Djawadi is listed as providing "additional music" along with several other individuals, and if you listen you can hear some similarities to the "Iron Man" soundtrack.
Excellent OST but with a 'Media Ventures' flavor. July 7, 2009 TCBusstra (Heerenveen, FL Holland) Very good OST, in which orchestral, electronical instruments and raw guitars are blended beautifully together. After listening the CD 1 time, the main orchestral become very obvious though never bore. They feel very epic and sometimes 'heavenly' because of the choirs and the calm echoing accoustic guitar sounds. When the guitar riffs kick in, I sometimes had a 'Trevor Rabin' feeling (especially because of his OST for 'Gone in 60 seconds'). The orchestral melodies, and sounds got me thinking soon enough about Hans Zimmer. Not so surprising since Steve Jablonsky is (if I am not mistaking) in Remote Control Productions (the former 'Media Ventures'). Renovatio is my favourite especially because of the raw guitar sounds. Also the track 'Mass vehicular Carnage is great because of the moviescore sound combined with a rap. Though the last tracks sounded too chaotic to me (not so surprising since the end of the movie was a little chaotic), I definitely can recommend this score. It supported the movie very well in ambience and action and is also very nice to listen to on the couch or even in your car.
This is an awesome movie score! September 15, 2008 M. Baechler (Palm Beach, FL) Once again, Steve Jablonsky has made a true movie score. It is not his absolut best work, which has to be the score of Transformers, yet it belongs to a 5-Star Moviescore. He gave a true personal touch to this work and this makes the difference between a movie soundtrack and a movie score. Probably one of the most gifted componists right now.
Amazing. September 7, 2008 V. Petra (Budapest, Hungary) This album is absolutely worth 19 dollars. After watching the movie, I knew I'd have to lay my hands on the score as soon as possible. All the tracks are fantastic, although I don't think that the track 'Mass Vehicular Carnage' has anything to do with the rest of the CD, because it's basically a rap song.
My favourite tracks are 'The Island Awaits You', 'This Tongue Thing's Amazing', 'Mass Winnings' and 'My Name Is Lincoln'. I'd say that if you like Hans Zimmer's music, this CD is definitely a good buy for you.
I FOUND IT!!!!!!!!!!! May 14, 2008 Andrew Kutz (The Vast Desert Subtropolis of Gilbert, Arizona, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My quest to find this soundtrack (though at the time, I didn't know this was the one I was looking for) began when I saw the Flyboys trailer a while back. The music in the trailer was amazing, and I was determined to find where it came from.
My search led me here, to Steve Jablonsky's The Island, and specifically track 14; My Name Is Lincoln.
Even if 'Lincoln' was the only track on the score, it may be worth the full price. Okay, not quite, but the song is VERY GOOD! Unfortunately, the rest of the score isn't quite as good, though it isn't terrible. It does not offer any strong themes or particularly memorable moments, it's kind of just there. I'm also not a huge fan of the last song, which I deleted from my mp3 player.
One should buy 'The Island' for 'My Name Is Lincoln,' then one should check out the Transformers score, Jablonsky's masterful work...that one is very good!
