The cleverness of Fall Out Boy's lyrical content is immediately evident by looking at the song titles on their sophomore disc, From Under the Cork Tree. "A Little Less 'Sixteen Candles,' a Little More 'Touch Me,'" "I Slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me" and "Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year" are but a small taste of the group's acerbic attitude. After FOB's indie debut hit the underground charts, the group's sudden indie-style success made for a fast growth spurt. Their appeal is obvious, from frontman Patrick Stump's Killer-esque pipes (especially evidenced in the disc-closing "XO") to their very melodic teen-angst anthems. While much of the disc operates at usual punk-pop speed, the highlight comes from a slower, emotion-laden cut called "I've Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth." This song of living in the public while working through private pain is a beautiful, multilayered number that stays with you long after the album is over. --Denise Sheppard

3 out of 5 stars Just okay.   October 1, 2009

I picked up this disc after seeing a live show by Fall Out Boy on TV. I though they sounding unique and really enjoyed the show. However, the disc didn't seem to capture the same excitement and effort that they put out on stage. I got bored with this disc after a few listens and have already moved on.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD   March 1, 2009

Fantastic CD. It's an album you can just listen to all the way through, because every song is good. Just FYI, mine came slightly effed up(two of the songs were messed up) but I think that was just bad luck. Buy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Above and beyond!   January 4, 2009
Coral T. (Los Angeles, California, United States)
This was the first Fall Out Boy album I ever picked up, so perhaps I'm a bit biased. But it was very catchy, the lyrics were pure genius (got stuck in my head for days and even put out as away messages and headlines on MySpace, Facebook, AIM, and MSN). I was only in middle school when I discovered them, so I may be a bit biased.

Four stars, because although the album is good, Pete's voice is quite nasaly and confusing in a good number of the songs. Also, very complicated song titles... some even rivaling Panic At the Disco.

Anyway, it's very good for teenagers, but I don't recommend it to people out of that category. They just won't understand it.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent   September 7, 2008
    Quiksilver 08 (Long Island. NY)
To say that I was surprised by this album is a drastic understatement. While I am guilty of having a preconceived notion of what this band is all about, I can definitely say now that this stuff is light years ahead of the type of garbage put out by bands like Good Charlotte and Panic! At The Disco. The album is full of hidden gems (Our Lawyer..., 7 Minutes in Heaven, Sophmore Slump...) as well as the hits you'll hear on the radio (Sugar, W're Going Down, Dance Dance, A Little More...). In fact, there really isn't a bad song on here. From start to finish, you'll be hit with catchy guitar rifs, great choruses, and so forth. What also works really well is the sequence in which the songs are slotted, giving the whole listening experience great continuity. While you can make the argument that the songs can be formulaic and similar to one another, you can't discount the musicianship on display here. The vocals and drumming are excellent throughout, and the lyrics are inspired, emotional, and often very clever. This band is a winner and this is truly an excellent, 5 star album that ranks alongside New Found Glory's "New Found Glory" and Blink-182's "Enema of the State" as the best of the pop-punk genre. Give it a chance- when you can't bring yourself to take it out of your cd playe, you'll be glad you did.
