Blues with Greg Koch September 12, 2008 Sean Bietz (Pennsylvania) My favorite instructor, Greg Koch, introducing me to the blues. What could be better? This is a great introduction to the guitar styles of some of the greats and Greg puts across the material with clarity and mirth o'plenty. One of several instructional DVDs of Greg's that I own and even without the tab it's worth it. But, pay attention here, it's 'Signature Licks' not signature songs. What you get is a breakdown of the artists style in some of their most memorable tunes. You don't get an entire transcription of each song. Even at that it's worth the price, I highly recommend it.
Good DVD, But.... August 18, 2008 G. Brady (Tokyo, Japan) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have other instructional DVDs by Greg Koch and as noted by others, yes, he is a very talented player and yes, he can be very annoying. Although the songs are well explained, this would be a much better DVD if they had a backing track to play along with and more importantly, if they supplied tablature for the parts they teach. I understand the need to cut costs, so rather than supplying Tab on paper in each DVD case, how about putting it on the DVD in a separate section, or having it online at their website where after inputting your DVD code, you could download it.
Great stuff March 25, 2007 Music Lover (Houston, TX) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I found huge benefit in this dvd as well as Greg's others. His step by step breakdown makes this dvd beneficial to players of all skill levels. I find that his humor is a great addition to the video. It keeps it interesting. Greg's explanations of the artist's styles and history great also. I feel that is an imprtant part of learning the blues.
Worth the price of admission January 19, 2007 K. D. Shultz (Canada) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This DVD featuring Greg Koch is a very well rounded look at some must know and play blues classics. The thing i like about his teaching method is that he takes time to show you proper string bending and phrasing at slower speeds,he also breaks down each song into understandable terms. For instance in the song "the Sky is Crying" by Stevie Ray Vaughan he demonstrates a very tricky solo run that would otherwise be very hard to learn on your own simply listening to the CD.Born Under A Bad Sign by Albert knig is played and explained using both Kings and Eric Claptons version. There could have been a little more jammed into this DVD but you will walk away a little better blues player after watching and playing along to it a few times. P.S both his Stevie Ray Vaughan dvd's are better in my opinion for complete knowledge.......Like others i'm not to thrilled with the "Gristle" DVD it's just OK.(2 stars)
greg koch is a great player but... September 23, 2006 jlbjr (bay area, ca.) 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
I purchased this dvd because I thought that the entire song was covered and instead it is just the signature licks of the songs and koch playing along with his band. Koch is an excellent guitar player as evidenced here and on his other dvd I have guitar gristle but his demeanor, jokes may be funny at first but after a while it tends to wear on your nerves and the time he spends talking about nothing and joking could be spent teaching material. That said he does cover some good stuff but if I saw it before I bought it I would not have purchased it.
