| Customer Reviews: GREAT MOVIE - Neanderthal review! July 5, 2005 J. Preston (San Juan Mountains) I would like to have written something positive about anything touching upon "The Wind and the Lion" and its author/director John Milius. However, the shallow nature of this review in Guns and Ammo magazine defies compromise.
John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Conan, Judge Roy Bean, Dirty Harry, 1941, JAWS, Rough Riders, Jeremiah Johnson, Dillinger, Magnum Force, etc., etc., etc.,) won a nomination in 1975 from the Writer's Guild of America for "The Wind and the Lion."
This singular award heralded his achievements, for the world, in bringing this wonderful story to the big screen.
This review in Guns & Ammo cheapens and trivializes an otherwise brilliant director/writer's work on the basis that there is a paralell between the plot of the 1975 film, and, today's terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I can't help but think that the author of this review walks stooped over with knuckles dragging on the ground.
Milius is an ardent defender of Second Amendment rights, a lifetime member of the NRA, and, a perennial Director on the Board of Directors of the NRA. It is puzzling why this reviewer did not delve deeper into the acclaim that has accompanied "The Wind and the Lion", and Mr. Milius, since the movie was first released in 1975.
"The Wind and the Lion" is a brilliant exploration of not only an accurate depiction of Islam at the turn of the century, but, also the rousing response of America to the global imperialism that presaged the First World War. It is little less than ignorant to defile this brilliant film solely on the basis of jingoistic viewpoints held by a single issue magazine.
Save your money and don't bother buying this review.
Spend your money on a good DVD version of the film (available on Amazon). You will, in viewing the film, engage one of the finest romantic adventures ever brought to the big screen in the twentieth century.
