Maynard James Keenan is known for venting his personal angst through the abstract metal of his former band Tool and the poisoned art rock of his current outfit A Perfect Circle. On the group's third full-length release, however, the songwriter drops the high drama and gets blunt: War is bad. Politicians are evil. The world is doomed. To support his case he delivers a handful of politically charged originals and unusual Eastern-influenced covers of crusty anti-war anthems like John Lennon's "Imagine" and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." You could never accuse Keenan of being predictable. --Aidin Vaziri

3 out of 5 stars It has its moments   December 12, 2009
    Nicole Berheim
I have a very broad music style, very eclectic. I love music and all genres that are unique or catchy. I liked this cd, but some songs just tried too hard. The first couple songs are good, if anything it's very mellow at times. My favorite songs are 1-4, 10 and 11. They're good, but I agree with a lot of people it's depressing. I think the intentions behind the music is good though, I would love to inspire people to think for themselves politically. With these younger generations coming into the world it's hard to say how politically active any of these kids will be. For me, it was a good cd. I wouldn't pay full price for it, but I don't regret getting it either. If anyone is un-sure go on youtube to listen to the songs fully, that's what I did to make sure I really enjoyed any of the songs at all. I hope this was helpful.

It took a while to even listen to this album all the way through. The Fear, Black Flag, and Depeche Mode covers are about as god-awful as the experimental remake of a good song can get. That said, the reinterpretations of Joni Mitchell, Lennon, Zeppelin, Marvin Gaye, and Devo are fantastic. Try those if you are having a hard time stomaching this album or if you just want to buy a few songs.

4 out of 5 stars A Perfect Circle (Emotive LP)   February 21, 2009

A Perfect Circle is headed by none other than James "Maynard" Keenan from the band TOOL. The album is a collection of anti-war cover songs including a few of A Perfect Circle's original songs. Annihilation, Passive, and Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums are all A Perfect Circle's making.

If you can't find appriciation for bands covering other bands' songs or more specifically how APC covers other bands' songs then you won't be capable of appreciating this album... but you won't know that until you listen to this specific album, right? Personally I don't mind when musicians I admire cover other bands and I admire APC -it's really a pretty simple outlook.

Granted this is not their best album but it's a product of the best supergroup ever created. With members (and former members) of The Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson and Tool it would be more of a task to produce something bad rather than ASTONISHING. There are some great covers on here with the forementioned band members giving them eerie, somewhat depressing, twists. Some of my favorite covers being "When the Levee Breaks", "What's Going On?" and "Peace Love & Understanding". I'm also happy to mention that a track made it on here from yet another super supergroup identified as 'Tapeworm' a defunct project of Trent Reznor and Keenan. This original Tapeworm track was released as "Passive", a good song which makes me wonder what Tapeworm may have been capable of.

If you are new to APC then you may want to experience Mer De Noms or Thirteenth Step to know APC's more proper sound before picking eMOTIVe up off the store shelves. But don't be fooled by all these characters making it sound like this album isn't any good. There are some tracks that are borderline skipable but there are also some of the best APC songs on here namely, the covers I mentioned previously, their rendition of Imagine and the 'remix' of the song "Pet" off of the Thirteenth Step album this time more properly titled "Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drums". There's no way that this album is anything less than four stars. Keep in mind though that for some this is a good buy only after you've heard their first two releases.

I think Amazon should make a special exception to their star rating and allow zero stars for this album and only this album!

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE

That's my review. And I thought the 1st two CDs were awesome. A down right horrible album.
