Kelly Clarkson could have played her American Idol-propelled career much differently, languishing in the role of dippy ingénue or shunting her musical development by leaning too heavily on overnight stardom. Instead she dug in her heels and allowed good sense (or a good manager) to steer, and somewhere Simon Fuller and the rest of the TV gang ought to be smiling. Credit Breakaway, which couldn't be more aptly titled--the sophomore effort represents a seismic split from the thin if pretty debut, Thankful. Here we encounter Clarkson as superstar, with the humility that made her likable on the first disc tucked tightly under her arm. First single and leadoff track "Breakaway" topped the pop charts on arrival, and its rock-friendly thumps, dips, and rolls don't wear out their welcome. Instead, they blend into the firestorm of beats and guitars that is "Since U Been Gone," another shout-it-out rocker. Those songs set the tone for the rest of the disc in all its fury: The innocence is long gone, "Addicted" and "Hear Me" say. The big, expressive voice ringed by the occasional high-pitch trill--the one that prompted millions to get behind her on Idol--doesn't dip entirely off the radar, though. On "Where Is Your Heart" and the stunning live closer "Beautiful Disaster," it's there in full force--a hint, maybe, that despite the wide, smart career step Breakaway represents, her fans come first. -Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars outstanding debut   February 4, 2010
    Francisco J. Ortiz (Big D)
Still one of my favorite American Idol singers.
She has a very pleasant voice and this CD is more than just radio pop music.
Has 4 solid hits: Breakaway, Since U Been Gone, Because Of You and Walk Away.
And has a couple of lesser played hits: Behind These Hazel Eyes and Hear me.
With this many hits I actually recommend buying the cd.

Great used if you can find one in good shape.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal ! (not just another pop-princess)   October 8, 2009

If you've read the reviews, you know you can't go wrong with this fantastic album. I'm still not sick of it, probably never will be. But in this review I want to simply shower this superb singer with high praise. Kelly's talent is IMMENSE and knows no bounds. Her voice is at once honey dripping over sand, falling over gravel, then back to her soothing, clear tone, but with a sound and an edge that is extraordinarily unique and unsurpassed. Beautiful, one-of-a-kind vocals. The end. She can rock, croon, ballad, pretty much anything. And her techique is virtually flawless and natural. Kelly is a SINGER, not a run-of-the-mill pop princess. This woman is still in her twenties. I can't wait to hear what lies ahead! Voices like hers are rare indeed, and come around maybe a few times in a century. I told a friend back in 2004 that I believed Kelly Clarkson may very well become the next Streisand. I'm not comparing her to Streisand, not at all. I'm simply trying to say that this is a HUGE talent that will be with us for many years to come. If you haven't heard her yet, and you appreciate fine vocals and amazing talent, no matter what your age, I can't urge you enough to listen to and fall in love with Kelly Clarkson, possibly the best vocalist of this century - so far.

    5 out of 5 stars A+   July 19, 2009
    Pocha Dot (Los Angeles)
2004 was a great year for some female artists. Avril Lavigne released "Under My Skin" which was some solid material, Ashlee Simpson released "Autobiograghy" (Say what you want, it's a great album) and then Kelly comes along with "Breakaway". Many will agree that "Breakaway" is Kelly's best studio album to date. Yes she has a few picks from her other album's but nothing as a whole that compares to this "Breakaway" album. The opening track "Breakaway" has been so powerful over the years that many artists of different genre's have covered it in their live shows, Even in Country and Gospel. Thanks to Avril Lavigne and her knack for writing a powerful tune that it even exsist. And of course we all know the anthem "Since U Been Gone" noone can forget that. "Behind These Hazle Eyes" "Beacause Of You" & "Walk Away" were also big powerful smashes that we all remember. This album as a whole has many great songs on it, it's unbelievable. This is the sound Kelly needs to stick with for a couple more albums before dipping into other sounds, Can you ever get enough?. She's an oustanding vocalists. Too bad her latest albums just don't compare to this one.
