Amazon.com Few bands are better suited than the Barenaked Ladies to take obnoxious old Christmas jingles to an entirely new level of obnoxiousness. The Canadian pop group does a smack-up job on this generous collection, where they tackle children's relics like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," curious seasonal fare such as Band-Aid's Ethiopian charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas," and a handful of tongue-in-cheek originals that share the bookish humor of the band's hits like "One Week" and "Brian Wilson." Even the inclusion of three Hannukah songs doesn't raise the bar for reverence. The disc also includes collaborations with Sarah McLachlan and Michael Buble. --Aidin Vaziri

hits and blahs February 6, 2010 C. Stanley (SLC, UT) I woke up with "Hanukkah oh Hanukkah light the menorah" in my head this morning and it's been 5 weeks since I listened to that song--so it's pretty catchy. My favorites are I Saw Three Ships and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and enjoyed a couple others but a lot of the "modern" songs were too melancholy for my taste. But I'm glad I bought it for the other songs.
Good Holiday CD February 3, 2010 Vulkrider (Washington DC) This CD includes the widely played duet of God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman and We Three Kings with Sarah McLachlen. It also a bunch of other holiday songs, including 3 Jewish holiday songs that are very well done. Also, if you are a fan of the band, this is good to have.
Excellent product December 24, 2009 M. L. Russo The description was accurate, the product was well-received within the stated delivery dates, just good feelings all around.
Track 1 alone sold me on this album December 24, 2009 Jason Stokes (St. Louis) This is a fun Christmas album. I wouldn't take it home to Grandma, as it isn't the typical Christmas fare, but as a fan of BNL, I really enjoy this. Track 1, Jingle Bells, sold me alone. It begins with a very serious, somber version of the song, then leads into delightful refrains of Batman smells, etc. It also mixes in several Hanukkah songs, including Hanukkah Blessings and I Have a Little Dreidel. Some of the songs are pure silliness, while others, like God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, are serious and traditional songs.
Highly Underrated... December 14, 2009 Joe 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Here is an excellent Christmas album by the best band in the world, BARENAKED LADIES! Unfortunately, this album is very underrated. A lot of people say things such as "this album is so sloppy, they knocked this crap off in a few days!". Actually, no. They took the whole month of may to record it, then they took much time to mix it. Anyways, here are my ratings on the songs:
1. Jingle Bells: (4/5) Starts off as a normal rendition of Jingles Bells (in which Steve's vocals sound great) then it turns into the good ole' BNL silly style.
2. Green Christmas: (5/5) My favorite song on the album. Great lyrics, and the beat sounds great (as well as Ed's voice!)
3. I Saw Three Ships: (5/5) A nice short little tune. Always great to hear a nice song sung by all the boys!
4. Hanukkah Blessings: (5/5) Nice catchy song. As always, Steve sounds great and wonderful songwriting.
5. O Holy Night: (4/5) Not much to say. Just an instrumental.
6. Elf's Lament: (5/5) Highly catchy song, Ed and Steve sound great together here!
7. Snowmen: (5/5) Nice slow song by Ed. Has a gloomy, sad feel to it.
8. Do They Know It's Christmas: (5/5) Wow, Ed's vocals sound different in parts of this song. In a good way though, wounds great. Steve also sounds great. Jim also helps out with the singing here. Another catchy one [as usuall with BNL ;) ].
9. Hanukkah O Hanukkah: (4/5) Just a nice song, not sure how to put it.
10. God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman/We Three Kings: (5/5) Nice song with great vocals. Apparently, this song was recorded WAY back in 1997. Also features Sarah McLachlan which sounds nice.
11. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: (4/5) Just an instrumental, but sounds nice.
12. Carol Of The Bells: (3/5) Ugh. Only song on here to get under a 4/5. I just don't like it, its too repetitive.
13. Footprints: (5/5) Great Ed song. He sounds great, and it's a nice mellow song.
14. Deck The Stills: (4/5) Just plain silly.
15. Christmastime (Oh Yeah): (5/5) I always LOVE hearing a nice Kevin song. Has great harmonizing too. Nice soft tune.
16. Sleigh Ride: (4/5) The guys just singing the beat to "Sleigh Ride". Kinda funny.
17. Christmas Pics: (4/5) A Jim song. Usually, I'm not a big fan of Jim's songs but this one is pretty good. Nice and gentle feel to it.
18. I Have a Little Dreidel: (4/5) Short, nice little upbeat song.
19. Wonderful Christmastime: (4/5) Nice instrumental of Wonderful Christmastime, and also contains a hidden track of BNL singing happy birthday to Jesus. Nice.
20. Auld Lang Syne: (5/5) Really nice song. Love the vocals in it, with Ed and Steve harmonizing. Beautiful.
