You hear a lot of echoes throughout Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography, but her big-eyed, bright-smiled sister Jessica isn't behind a one of them. That'll come as no surprise to fans and anyone who has caught the "darker" Simpson sister on MTV, which is responsible for hurtling the hard-edged "Pieces of Me" onto radio playlists across the country and creating a mini frenzy over this CD's content. Stoking the gossip-fueled flames is track three, "Shadow." On it, 19-year-old Ashlee spills her childhood resentment over her sister's attention-gulping career, ending up on a conciliatory note that has the surprising effect of making the Simpson divas' drama seem believable ("Everything's cool now…and the past is in the past," she sings). But serious music fans ought not to dilly-dally with the celeb stuff and dive right in, because this disc dishes up more than a lot of us bargained for. "LaLa" revs up the unsuspecting by way of out-and-out lustiness, "Love for Me" lays on the lovelorn angst thick, and the title track is a take-no-prisoners, love-me-or-leave-me rock anthem. Rippling throughout are cunningly malleable vocals, bending here for a kittenish Gwen Stefani effect, stretching there to sound Christina Aguilera-cathartic. Sweeter moments call to mind the indie sensibilities of Jill Sobule. Jealous? Not really. Just puzzled and deeply annoyed.
I can't answer for others, but what annoys me is that there are LOTS of other, far more talented people who will NEVER get the promotion and publicity they deserve. (And I'm NOT talking about myself or any members of my family.) When someone with no discernable talent whatsoever gets this kind of insane saturation promotion by the record industry, it's a fair question to ask why. There are girls at my local high school who can sing and dance and play guitar much better that Ashlee can. So, like an earlier reviewer asked, WHY HER?

I admit that Ashlee Simpson doesnt have the greatest voice but I really enjoyed this CD. I listed to it for months and learned every word to every song. Some of them start to sound the same after awhile and have the same message but all of them are catchy. Some of my favorites on this CD are "Shadow" and "Piece of Me". It's worth checking out especially if you are a big Ashlee Simpson fan. It's probably some of her best work.

This is a CLASSIC Pop/Rock Album, It's an album Ashlee Simpson should be really proud of. When listening to it i don't hear anything wrong with it. Everything's on point for the most part unless you don't like Pop/Rock, Although im not too fond of the breakdown in the opening track. They couldv'e edited that out. Other than that it has great lyrics, really cool melodies & it's not too bubblegum, maybe 1 or 2 songs. Vocally (On this album) She sounds to me like she can do whatever The Bangles, The Go-Go's, Divinyls or Joan Jett did back in the 80's when they recorded their albums. Although i like those bands alot you don't have to be a dynamite singer to sing those types of songs. I Honestly don't see what the problem is. These are standard Pop/Rock songs that she pulled off well. I enjoyed this album tremendously, anyone who disagrees with this being an acceptable album is just being negative. Also check out the 'Japanese Import' of this album, It has a really pretty bonus track 'Endless Summer' which i believe shouldv'e been on the original tracklist.

I bought this album when it first came out, but then I got careless and didn't put it in its sleeve so it got scratched. I was really happy to find it on Amazon because I can't find it in the stores anymore! It's one of her first CDs, so I was really surprised to find out it was good. Give it a whirl! You won't be sorry.

Clearly, all the people that are bringing up the SNL incident and others haven't even listened to the full album! It would certainly be a mistake to only purchase several songs and base your reviews on that. The album as a whole is a story. Sure, she isn't the best vocalist in the world. But she has her own unique style without all the profanity everyone feels it necessary to include in their songwriting. Just listen to the vocals, they are actually really amazing. And the instrumentation is great as well. I can't say that there is a song on here that I don't like. I have yet to see an album top this one.
