OK, but now I know why Metallica is infinitely more popular January 29, 2010 Louis Coniglio (Georgia) I never owned a Megadeth album before, but I admired Mustaine in a sense because I felt he got the raw deal, getting kicked out of Metallica so many years ago. I bought it because I read Psychotron is a song based on Dethlok, a Marvel Comics character (and a cool cyborg/zombie, to boot), and because this was a commercially successful album. I figured it would have decent polish both from the original recording, and the remaster. The songs are okay, the guitar riffs and pace are decent to good, considering this was a commercial attempt and not that 'heavy.' But I tend to find Mustaine's vocals largely grating with the exception of the aforementioned Psychotron. It sounds like his mouth is closed and he's singing through his teeth. The real saving grace are the demo versions at the end of the CD, which have a heavier, natural feel; odd because there is less sound from the other instruments. All in all, good but not great.
76/100, It's no Peace Sells or Rust In Peace, but it's still very good even if the hardcore thrashers don't want to admit it. July 9, 2009 Robert Thompson (Under Your Bed!!!) AUTHOR'S NOTE: I recently moved over to a new review system in which I rate each song and then create an average rating for the whole album rather than just giving the album a rating based purely on my general feel for the album. This allows for a much more accurate and unfortunately a much harsher rating for each album. Because of this my new number ratings may not match up with the star ratings on my older reviews when I updated them with this new review system. Thanks for your understanding.
Megadeth was on a winning streak with Killing Is My Business, peace Sells, So Far So Good So What, and Rust In Peace. With Countdown To Extinction they continued that streak of excellence and gave us another superb metal album. Dave doesn't sound quite as angry here, but if you ask me he sounds just as good as he did in the past it's just different. It's more like real singing now and less angry thrash yells and growls. The album isn't as technical as past ones, but I think it's overall more progressive sounding and still awesome.
"Skin O' My Teeth"-Very strong opener for the album. Thrashy with a melodic chorus. 8/10
"Symphony Of Destruction"-An instant classic that gets better with every listen. The perfect mix of angry old Megadeth and newer more melodic Megadeth. It has Dave's angry growl with both thrash and melodic elements. 9/10
"Architecture Of Aggression"-This is what a song sounds like if you take a thrash riff that's a little on the simple side and then slow it down and make it into a melodic song. Not bad, but not all that engaging either. 7/10
"Foreclosure Of A Dream"-An underrated gem in my opinion. Dave's vocals shine on this album and his meaningful lyrics still ring true to this day. Combine that with a softer but still interesting guitar part and you have a great song. 8.5/10
"Sweating Bullets"-Definitely a classic in my book. It may be simple but it's a very fun and unique song that would be a blast to hear live. The intro was the first guitar part I learned and I never tire listening to Dave speaking back and forth with himself using his genius lyrics and unforgettable vocals. 9/10
"This Was My Life"-Has a very cool riff, sounds a lot like something that may have been left out of Peace Sells or SFSGSW. 8/10
"Countdown To Extinction"-A great choice for a title track and a Megadeth classic. 9/10
"High Speed Dirt"-Has a cool riff but the lyrics are kind of lame and childish. The song gets repetitive after a while as well. 7/10
"Psychotron"-Boring song with bad lyrics. Makes you wonder how it got on this otherwise superb album. 5/10
"Captive Honour"-A hint of what was to come on future albums like Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings. Very melodic, overly simple, and just kind of forgettable. 6/10
"Ashes In Your Mouth"-A very good song to close the album with. The lyrics are a litle lacking but it has a pretty cool solo and some great riffing. 8/10
Bands don't need to be super technical to be awesome, sometimes people forget that. "Foreclosure Of A Dream", "Skin O' My Teeth", and "Ashes In Your Mouth" are all good/great songs but they just can't beat out my top three for this album: "Symphony Of Destruction", "Sweating Bullets", and "Countdown To Extinction". This album may not be considered thrash anymore, but it's still a fantastic metal album that is worthy of your respect.
MEGADETH'S BEST? June 17, 2009 MRT I waiver on which is my favorite deth cd. somedays it's this one and others it's rust in piece. either way both are great.
'Skin O' My Teeth': Awesome start to the album. Perfect opening track that jumps right out at you. Great riff, awesome lyrics. Sets a tone for the whole album. 5/5
'Symphony Of Destruction': Everyone knows this track. One of Megadeth's best and everyone knows the words. It has to be sung along to. Amazing start to this track with an awesome riff. 5/5
'Architecture Of Agression': Great track that isn't one of Megadeth's best known tracks but it really should be. Very nice chorus. 5/5
'Foreclosure Of A Dream': Slightly slower than most Megadeth songs but still great. Dave makes this more melodic and a very nice solo. 5/5
'Sweating Bullets': Very interesting verses in this track. Dave really talks the verses and sings the chorus. It is different, but it works extremely well. 5/5
'This Was My Life': Amazing chorus in this track that is very catchy indeed. 5/5
'Countdown To Extinction': Best track on the album. Superb riff, superb lyrics, superb solo. What more do you want? One of Megadeth's best. 5/5
'High Speed Dirt': Nice riff in this track just not as good as others on this album. Good chorus. 4/5
'Psychotron': Amazing riffage in this track and a cracking chorus! Again it is quite catchy and another Megadeth track that isn't well known but it should be! 5/5
'Captive Honour': This starts out slow but builds up very nicely. Very good lyrics in this as Dave uses other people to talk from a court session. (you'll understand when you haer it). Very good riff and chorus. 5/5
'Ashes In Your Mouth': Very good ending to the album which has great lyrics and you notice the riff the more you listen to it. Excellent faded out ending. 4/5
New Romantic March 24, 2009 Joseph Adams (Superior, WI USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Dave Mustaine was bright enough to leave Metallice before they got really big, in this album only the popularity of metal music hides the new romantic flavor of this album. Symphony of Destruction remains a classic track, as are Skin of my Teeth and Sweating Bullets, plus the title track. If you can stomach metal's new romantic, by all means this is a classic album.
Best Megadeth Albumn February 14, 2009 Scott S. Bligh (Modesto, Ca) This by far is Megadeth's best albumn. All the songs are classic. Dave Mustaine rips on vocal's and prove Megadeth is the leader in top metal bands. In my opinion this put them over Metallica. Although they have not achieved the level of this albumn since, United Abomonations is close. If you can only buy 1 Megadeth albumn this is it! I listened to this one thousands of time on tape! I still have the tape!
