 Solid melodic metal album August 16, 2009

Megadeth's Youthanasia is a melodic metal album that just plain rocks. The album gets off to a great start with Reckoning Day, a song with a good melody and changes. Megadeth started to experiment with a different sound in the 1990s to become more melodic and less thrashy, instead playing just regular heavy metal. I think it worked well, as these songs on this album are solid rockers. Most of the songs fall into the same mold, that is, there is a consistent sound throughout the album where the songs have pretty much the same guitar sound. But this is normal for a heavy metal band. It kind of reminds me of Motley Crue's Shout At The Devil album. Mick Mars' guitar sounds the same in almost every song, but the songs and melodies are vastly different from each other. I have the same view when it comes to this album.
The best songs, in my opinion, are Reckoning Day, Train Of Consequences, A Tout Le Monde, Elysian Fields, The Killing Road, Black Curtains and Victory.
If you want good 'ol solid heavy metal with some melody to it, then buy this album. Megadeth is a great metal band. Highly recommended.

With Countdown To Extinction Megadeth began moving into their newer style, a slowed down less angry version of themselves that appealed more to the mass market. Now, being slower and less technical isn't necessarily bad as evidenced by the still excellent Countdown To Extinction, and while Youthanasia is still great in my opinion you cans tart to see that Megadeth is going a bit too far in terms of trying to make their sound more friendly to the mass market.
"Reckoning Day"-Not bad, very melodic. Cool riff, but the song as a whole lacks any sort of real hook. 7/10
"Train of Consequences"-Another very melodic song, Dave gets a little carried away with the palm muting here. Has a nice chorus. 7/10
"Addicted to Chaos"-Once again very melodic, noticing a trend with this album yet? Nevertheless I actually really dig this song. 8/10
"A Tout Le Monde"-The really big standout on the album, and while it's slow it's still extremely powerful and just a truly fantastic and emotional song. 9/10
"Elysian Fields"-Sounds very much like Countdown material. Melodic, not very heavy, but I like it. 7.5/10
"The Killing Road"-Easily the heaviest sounding song on the whole album and the closest one on here to thrash. We'll call it melodic thrash. 8/10
"Blood of Heroes"-Very solid song, almost great even. 7.5/10
"Family Tree"-Kind of lackluster lyrics, but it's musically solid. 7/10
"Youthanasia"-Pretty disappointing considering it's the title track. Not really bad but not good either. 6/10
"I Thought I Knew It All"-Very boring and overly simple. Having said that it is listenable and gets a little better the farther it goes in. 6/10
"Black Curtains"-One of the heavier songs on here. It's an entertaining song but it's not something that beckons you to listen to it often. 7/10
"Victory"-Interesting because lyrically it's pretty much made up of past song names and lyrics. The bass line and Dave's singing really made me like this song. 8/10.
"Millennium of the Blind"-Another song that sounds a lot like Countdown. I really like the guitar work on here. This was a very solid way to end the album. 8/10
My favorite songs on this album are "A Tout Le Monde" and "Victory", and "Millennium of the Blind". If you have the remaster there's two demos on there that will make you wonder why the heck they didn't put them on because they're legitimately great. "New World Order" being the first one, is straight forward pure thrash song and is certainly up to par with the rest of the material on here, even better than most of it I would say. "Absolution" is an awesome instrumental that definitely deserves a listen if you're into instrumentals. It's really great. The "A Tout Le Monde" demo is the last bonus track on there, and really isn't worth listening to. It gets surprisingly bad pretty quick. While Megadeth may have slowed down a bit, the passion and the message in the lyrics are still there.

Megadeth 3rd cd in the trilogy at the top. RUST IN PEACE, COUNTDOWN TO EXCTINCTION, YOUTHANASIA.This album is amazing not a bad track on it. This album is very heavy and loud. The album starts of with the heavy riff of Reckoning Day a great album opener the album is just amazing from the start to finish. My favourite tracks have to be Victory , The Killing Road, Train Of Conseqeunces, Reckoning Day & A Toute Le Monde.

When Youthanasia first was released in 1994 it was a dark time for most any band that started in the 80s. Yet Megadeth went on to release what still is today one of my favorite albums and manages to exceed the Metallica Black album in overall consistency and quality of lyrics (They make sense) and overall sound quality. (I love the Black album, too) It is the rare occasion when a non greatest hits album can be listened to nonstop without cringing at even one of the songs. How many AC/DC albums have simply terrible songs sprinkled in between some of the greatest Hard Rock songs ever? AC/DC has only 2 albums as consistently good as Youthanasia and they are both the classics Highway to Hell and Back in Black.
The best songs are Youthanasia are Train of Consequences, Addicted to Chaos, Blood of Heroes, and Family Tree. There are so many good ones that your favorites are probably different. Hell, I like them all.
Family Tree is strangely the song that stands out the most to me as it deals with horrible incest but it takes on that topic with a great riff and the best one of the album. I guess it is near impossible to have a top 10 hit that deals with such a taboo topic.

In retrospect, if Dave Mustaine ever had a shot at getting that #1 record he desperately wanted, this was the album to do it with. A shame it came a year or two too late. This is an album that finds Megadeth embracing an even more "pop" sound than Countdown; it rocks in a more straightforward way than any of their previous albums, but the band maintains it's artistic integrity. A rare feat, especially in metal. Youthanasia is a great album. Different (compared to Rust or Peace Sells), but great.
