Amazon.com Moving to Los Angeles after an unproductive stint in Nashville, Kentucky-born Dwight Yoakam made a name for himself by reviving the more robust honky-tonk traditions of the Bakersfield Sound--a bold contrast with Music City's assembly-line approach. In 1984, his independently released six-song EP, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc., added to the buzz and helped land him on Warner Bros./Reprise. Now, twenty years later comes The Very Best of Dwight Yoakam, a superb single-disc distillation of the four-CD box, Reprise Please Baby: The Warner Bros. Years. With 20 tracks spanning his recording career and sequenced in chronological order, the set rolls along with gusto and verve. While not covering every one of his releases (the Christmas and covers releases are omitted, for example), there are some singles and soundtrack entries that fall nicely into place. --David Greenberger

A terrific collection September 21, 2009 SPIRIT SNIPER (USA) After I first heard This Time I knew I had to give this Best Of CD a listen. Its great, and its got some of his best older songs like "Honky-Tonk Man" and "Thousand Miles From Nowhere," and some newer ones like "Late Great Golden State." A lot of the songs deal with fairly standard material, but what sets them apart is that Dwight's voice really lends itself to the song and isn't just blowhard country pomposity, unlike Toby Keith or similar. He also branches out beyond the straightforward hillbilly style of music, tackling songs like Elvis' "Suspicious Minds" and Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." I would highly recommend this to a new fan of Dwight, and also check out any of his albums, especially his first one Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. or even Population Me. I am a big fan of Dwight Yoakam's style of country, he sings really well and is a lot more genuine than a lot of other country music stars. If you are a fan of country or of music in general, check this out.
Dwight Rocks September 9, 2009 Doctor Nancy Incredible mix of his vocal and lyrics. I love A Thousand Miles from Nowhere. No album of his would be complete without it. I Sang Dixie melts my heart. A truly wonderful album.
Always the Best from Dwight !! December 16, 2008 Joseph Kostus (Phoenix) I have loved Dwight's Music for years and this is definitely the Very Best. Have shared this CD with friends and even those who are not big fans of Country loved it.
Great September 21, 2008 John C. Mcguigan I started paying attention to Dwight Yoakam not long ago. I think he is great and what country should be.
This is the one I listen too when I'm driving. August 17, 2008 L. John (California, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Oh yeah...and I sing along. This is sophisticated country. This CD will please your senses and awaken your imagination. If you think you don't like country music...listen to this one and you'll think again.
