3 out of 5 stars Finally, some inspiration   August 21, 2009
    Robin Solsjö Höglund (Skellefteå, Sweden)
After Vile (weak), Gallery of Suicide (decent), Bloodthirst (uninspired) and Gore Obsessed (more of the same), it was finally time for Cannibal Corpse to return with a good album, and this is definitely a good album. To begin with, Vince's artwork was the most inspired in years - a throwback to Butchered at Birth. Even though it's more fantastical in nature, it's pretty shocking to look at. And then there's the songs themselves, feeling much more inspired than they had been for years. "Severed Head Stoning" tells of a man stoned to death with the severed heads of his own family members - what a way to start an album! "Decency Defied" is an absolutely great Jack Owen track, with a method to its steady riffing, directly followed by the impossibly insane "Frantic Disembowelment", a viciously fast Pat O'Brien guitar nightmare. To this day, the band all agree that it's their most difficult song to learn (regardless of instrument). The title track is a slower one, but it describes the lineage of this wicked creature in nice and rhyming choruses. This is followed by a whole slew of (mostly) steady tracks, closing up with songs like "Bent Backwards And Broken" (cleverly put) and one of my favourites, an homage to I Spit on Your Grave, "They Deserve To Die" - where rapist scum get their comeuppance both literally and lyrically. The Wretched Spawn is a much more inspired, vicious and diverse album than many of its predecessors, and it's not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars The Wretched Spawn - Cannibal Corpse   July 24, 2009
    Sam Houston
The Wretched Spawn was one of my first Cannibal Corpse albums, and to this day it remains the best of my collection. Flawless production, brutal mix of hooky songs as well as brutal songs. This album takes you through many twists and turns, beginning with the trashy Severed Head Stoning, and ending with the 16 second scream from Fisher on They Deserve to Die. A more thorough breakdown:

Severed Head Stoning - One of THE best Cannibal openers. Amazing riffs and drums as fast as lightning. What you'd expect as a Corpse opener. 4 Stars.

Psychotic Precision - Very technical song. At one point I thought my player skipped, because there is a repeated section where they completely go off course, and after repeated listens, it gets EXTREMELY addictive. Great technical song with many pinch harmonics to bang your head to. 5 Stars.

Decency Defied - Good song upon first listen. Very, very catchy song, though after repeated listens it normally requires a skip, because it follows the setup of a basic radio friendly song. 3 Stars.

Frantic Disembowelment - Wow. If there is one song that completely is worth buying the ENTIRE album for, its definitely this song. Amazingly technical, extremely hard to play. Just watch the extra DVD to see what I mean. They play Frantic without any vocals and with Pat as the only guitarist. You'll appreciate this song that much more after you realize its difficulty. Oh, and yes, it comes with a bonus DVD that shows the making of the album, plus some bonus features, but I digress. Brutal song, speedy riffs, grows on you. 5 Stars.

The Wretched Spawn - Used to be my favorite off the album, but for now, its just decent. This has one of the most amazing breakdowns in the history of the Corpse. I love the extreme head banging section where Fisher screams, IT WAS MADE TO KILL!!!. 5 Stars.

Cyanide Assassin - Typical, but still brutal Corpse. Very fast song with many twists and turns to keep you interested, not much else to say. 5 Stars.

Festering in the Crypt - It seems there is a nice little slow song on each Cannibal album lately, always written by Owen. They always kick arse, and this is no exception. I think this is one of the best songs Owen has written since Pat joined the band. 5 Stars.

Nothing Left to Mutilate - Strange song. It gets your head thrashing, but it seems like George is the focus here, as the guitars fade into the mix. Eh, it doesn't deserve a skip, but it isn't a standout track. 4 Stars.

Blunt Force Castration - I love the lyrics to this song, but the music is only basic. Another typical Corpse song. 4 Stars.

Rotted Body Landslide - I love the section near the beginning of this song. And boy, do I LOVE this song title! Decent song. 4 Stars.

Slain - Not for the average Corpse fan, this song may let some of you down. Strange song, in all honesty, but I think that makes it a gem. Not extremely well done, but rare for Corpse, so i'll give it 4 Stars just for trying something new.

Bent Backwards and Broken - Another amazing song title, with amazing lyrics. This song is quite technical, and it will definitely melt faces. 5 Stars.

They Deserve to Die - Amazing song. Very heavy, very catchy. Has a nice 16 second scream by the one and only George Fisher near the end. Very pleasing, and slightly unexpected as an album closer.

This album holds a very special place in my Corpse, hell, even music collection, and I recommend it to every Corpse fan. Those of you who never have tried Death Metal, listen with an open mind, please. And those of you who refuse to listen with an open mind, but buy the album anyway, please don't come onto Amazon and bash this album like so many others have done.

5 out of 5 stars Solid As Can Be   March 16, 2009
    Jeff Holmes (USA)
I absolutely love this album because of its uniqueness and diversity between each track. I even like this one over "Evisceration Plague" and "Kill" although all three are great albums. "Wretched Spawn" could very well be one of the best with George. "Wretched Spawn" has everything from characteristic Cannibal Corpse speed, to melodic downtempo grooves as heard in "Festering in the Crypt" and "Rotted Body Landslide". If you like something a little more catchy, yet brutal, check out "Decency Defied". This should satisfy any Corpse fan. Overall, I think the production is great and all the band members display their utmost talent AND creativity in "Wretched Spawn". As always, Cannibal Corpse plays very technical and intense death metal. There is no part of this record that should let a Cannibal Corpse fan down. My only suggestion for the production of this album is that the guitars should be just a little louder, but that issue is definitely worked out in "Kill" and "Evisceration Plague". This is also one of the most "easy listening" albums of Cannibal Corpse. This is not to say it will put you to sleep, I'm only saying that the construction of the tracks themselves are so smooth that it should be pleasing to a good death metal ear. Enjoy this one!

5 out of 5 stars The best!   November 19, 2008

Best Death metal band ever, period. Cannibal Corpse just keep on getting better and better! Each awesome album leaves you wanting more death metal carnage, this one is no exception!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Second only to Suffocation in my opinion!   November 5, 2008
Steven D. Hensley (APO, AP United States)
I guess I just want to bag on Razor606 because whoever that person is doesn't have a clue of what he or she is talking about. If you pulled the wax balls out of your ears and your head out of your A** you would be able to hear the bass lines pretty clearly on any of their albums. As for the drummer being just "alright!" You obviously have no musical talent of your own and are pi**ed off at how damn good of a drummer he is that you have to talk down about him to make yourself feel better about what a little no-talent A** Clown you are. Yes their lyrics are gory. Most of their lyrics are inspired by old school horror movies and other similar interests. You're not supposed to take the lyrics seriously as you obviously have, you retard. To say that Cannibal Corpse makes "horrible" music and that at times it sounds like they are just making random noises, is to simply reveal that you are tone deaf, and don't have a clue about anything to do with making music. If you don't like it don't listen to it. If you're not into that type of music then just do like they always say not to and judge the thing by its cover art. You don't have to make retarded remarks about one of the most innovative, talented, and well known bands of their genre. You go right ahead and listen to Avril or whatever other homo crap you want to. As for mentioning bands like Lamb of God and Trivium and talking trash about Cannibal Corpse you need to stop and think about what you are saying instead of allowing your brain farts to be the final choice of words to come out of your smelly mouth. Trivium and Lamb of God are not really Death Metal however, they are both well liked by fans of Cannibal Corpse and vice versa. Hence, just because you don't like, doesn't mean it isn't any good. And talking about bands that sound exactly the same on every song, Lamb of God is a perfect example. Chris Adler uses the same exact drum beat in all of his songs. It may be arranged slightly different but it's the same damn thing, just like Paul from Cannibal Corpse. Some of us like that stuff, others (homos like you) don't. To be honest, ONE of the only drummers that I listen to on a regular basis that doesn't play the same thing in all of his songs is, Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall. It's a hard thing to come by. Even Travis Smith of Trivium plays a lot of the same thing in every song. So to sit there and tear apart Cannibal Corpse for being redundant, defeated your whole damn argument. You are a retard, a cold dry vagina, and a Jerry's Kid all-in-one. Why don't you go douche, they're starting to complain about your vaginal stench all the way over in China. And that is all.

P.S. Why don't you send your mom over to my place. She obviously needs to be slapped around a bit for raising such a piece of dog crap like yourself. And then, I'll wrong hole her, as additional punishment.
