After 16 years in the pop diva business, Kylie Minogue doesn't bother reinventing herself. Maybe that's why Body Language sounds so effortlessly appealing. Confidence permeates the record's savvy mix of modern and retro, implanting slinky tunes like "Slow" into your brain's guilty pleasure section. Aided greatly by producer Kurtis Mantronik's resourceful touch, sparse electroclash rhythms blend easily with Minogue's shrewd pop sense, milking it for maximum catchiness. True, Kylie's barely-there voice remains a weak spot, and her attempt at rap on "Secret (Take You Home)" doesn't quite work (though it's better than you might think). More often, those helium tones are put to effective use; her sighing vocal on "Chocolate" is pure, sweet decadence. Prince himself might be a little envious of how well Mantronik lays down the 1999-style electro-funk, as tracks like "Still Standing" glide along on computer soul and the singer's practiced tease. And therein lies Body Language's most impressive feat: It makes Minogue's plastic sex appeal sound not just like the most natural thing in the world, but like an honest-to-God artistic statement. --Matthew Cooke

4 out of 5 stars Body movin!   January 3, 2010

you can put this cd and never press skip! Great music from start to finish one of her better ones!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent   August 24, 2009
    Courtenay Gilford (Washington, D.C.)
I absolutely loved "Body Language" the album was good, and not many people really out good ninth albums but Kylie Minogue had hit her mark with this one. My favorite track tracks included Secret (Take You Home) I really liked the sampling of "I Wonder if I Take You Home" Promises which was deep, Red Blooded Woman I love this and its remix that appears on "Boombox" and of course Chocolate but it is so much better with Ludacris on the track though. Overall this is some of her best work yet.

    3 out of 5 stars Where's the music?   May 9, 2009

Kylie shouldv'e come harder this time around, no excuses. The lead single "Slow" is the hottest song on the album all together. None of other songs on the tracklist can match it. I was in hopes for something untouchable, obscure & something exotic. She's from the UK, There's no reason why this album should be the way it is with all those amazing british producers. With a title like "Body Language" anyone would expect attitude & gloss and that's not what's being dished. There's large batch of songs that are interchangeably forgettable, flat, dull & just boring. "You Make Me Feel" "Promises" "Loving Days" "After Dark" & "Somedays" are all a drag and a complete waste of studio time. The second single "Red Blooded Woman" sounds familiar like everything else on the radio, It's nothing extra, Radio loved it though, Then again they always love the best songs don't they?. The song "Still Standing" reminds me alot of Prince, Kylie sings in high pitch key like Prince did on his hit "Kiss", it doesn't make me move at all. I chose to end this review on a good note by saving the best for last. "Secret" is a pop-hip-hop/dance track with a cute chorus, She even busts a rhyme for the bridge thats identical to "Milkshake" by Kelis "My Milkshake brings all the boys to the yard... And there like... It's bedda than yours" it has that same flavor. "Sweet Music" is a blast, this is another hot track with a beat that's unforgettable. "Cruise Control" is the most hip-hop styled song on the album and is listenable. "Chocolate" is completely Rnb and it's smooth-n-creamy, I really like this song alot. At last, we have "Obsession". "Obsession" posesses some of the attitude I was looking for in "Body Language", It's flavorfull, femenine & sassy. I agree when they say don't judge a book by it's cover, In this case it's a CD. It has appealing artwork and a nice album title & the lead single is a smash. "Body Language" was a dissapointment but i've heard worse, I just got my hopes up for something much more powerful than this. Maybe next time.

2 out of 5 stars It sucked!   March 17, 2009
    RJ (rjmusic)
I'm not gonna lie I tried to give this a chance, but didn't think it was that great. I thought they picked some decent beats but other then that there was nothin there. I thought most of the songs were boring, too girly, and not that great. Compared to Fever, i thought this album was awful! And can see why it tanked in America. She really should have had some really uptempo tracks on this cd that would have made it alot better. Chocolate, boring. Red blooded Woman, ok. I mean seriously? when you have britney spears, gwen stefani, and countless other carbon copies in America that actually sound decent this stuff doesn't really stand well in the us. If there was a dictionary word for bad pop music this album cover would be on it!

1 out of 5 stars An awful attempt at going R'n'B   July 5, 2008
    Kasper Michelsen (Copenhagen, Denmark.)
I'm a moderate fan of Kylie Mingogue - her 2000 release Light Years still stands as one of the best pop releases of the decade - but this attempt at going R'n'B is, frankly, bloody awful, and since the release of the career review "Ultimate Kylie" the album stands as completely pointless.

Why it turned out so bad is a bit of a puzzle, because it begins so well. Slow is one of the most groovy and funky tracks she's ever did, and accompagned by a mighty sexy video (one of the best she ever did!) the album could not get have a better launch. However, from here, it turns into one long nightmarish ride through poorly written and poorly produced slick R'n'B tracks with heavy beats and no hooks.

Well, with one notable example. As surprising as the decline in quality after Slow, Red Blooded Woman lies as a diamond in a pile of junk, sparkling, glittering, and having everything the rest of the album seems to lack: Charm, hook, melody, quality. Not surprisingly, this track was picked as second single and faired excellent (in spite of an awfully boring video).

Chocolate, third single from the album, has all the potential to shine on the dull backdrop that the rest of this album forms, but never really takes off for me. It's quite plain and mediocre, which, however, still makes it better than the rest of the album. I guess Loving Days is the only other none-single track which bears singular mention, as it has actualyl a nice melody. In fact, this is a better track than Chocolate for me, albeit marred by poor vocal production. Apart from this track, I'd say all tracks worth having on this album is also on "Ultimate Kylie".

If you want to look into Kylie's album catalogue beyond collections like "Ultimate Kylie", for God's sake don't start here. Go pick up the sparkling Light Years that contains only keeper tracks (and about a handful of obvious singles that were never released!). 1997's Impossible Princess (later retitled: Kylie Minogue) is another interesting place to start, and even the recent 'X' actually is a good (albeit uneven) listen.

If you must get an impression of what this album's about, I advice you instead to pick up the DVD from the Album Launch at the Apollo Theatre. At least this DVD will offer you the live version of Breathe / Je T'aime, which although not exactly amazing, does form a marginally interesting listen.
