 This album redefines the word "brutal" September 21, 2009

This was the first true death metal album I ever purchased. I'll never forget the ride home from the store. I put the cd in the car's player, and was rewarded with the 88 second "ambient" style introduction to the album's fist track, "Meat Hook Sodomy". Or I should say the reward came at 1:23, when the music came in. Then all I thought I could possibly think was "more volume!" I kept spinning the knob, but to no avail. The volume was maxed out. Oh well. The music was unlike anything I have ever heard. It was fast, brutal, and evil. Looking back, it's almost more deathgrind than death metal. The bass work by Alex Webster is as perfect as it is on any other Cannibal Corpse record, and Paul Mazurkiewicz's unrelenting blast beats, Chris Barnes' ridiculously guttural vocals, and talented output from guitarists Jack Owen and Bob Rusay combine dark forces resulting in a death metal classic. The stand out work in the album, however, remains Alex Webster's bass playing. Webster may be the greates bass player in death metal history, besting even ex-Death's Steve DiGiorgio.
And imagine the shock when I found that "Tomb of the Mutilated" and "The Bleeding" are even more brutal than this.

cant believe kids like this.....it sounds like the cookie monster singing along to some bad metal....the album covers are very entertaining and thats pretty much it...if you want real metal, listen to Winger......haha just kidding.....kids, please just listen to Slayer....no gimicks with those guys....the read deal...this is just trying to be scary, and it is not scaring me....

This is Cannibal Corpse's brutal follow up to their debut, Eaten Back To Life. They really start to come into their own as a band with this release. This album is heavier and more brutal than their debut, and still ranks among the heaviest death metal albums of all time. It also has what is probably the best death metal album artwork of all time. The guitars shred nonstop until your ears bleed. The bass is great if you can hear it, but it's really difficult because it's buried under everything else. The drums are top notch and incredibly creative as always. Chris Barnes tries to go even lower on this album and does a really great job overall.
"Meat Hook Sodomy"-Starts off with random ambient noise until about a minute and 20 seconds in, then it goes full speed ahead into some brutal death metal. The drums on this track are awesome and when combined with the highly rhythmic guitar work it just makes you want to headbang. 8.5/10
"Gutted"-No ambient intro this time around, no you go right into a mid paced but heavy sounding set of riffs which gets followed by some really fast and brutal stuff. Great death metal song filled with time changes and pure brutality. 8.5/10
"Living Dissection"-Starts with an incredibly awesome and brutal riff with drums that go perfectly. This song is incredibly brutal sounding and it just feels good to listen to it. 9/10
"Under The Rotted Flesh"-Some really good riffs throughout the song along with consistent and heavy drumming. 8/10
"Covered With Sores"-Starts off with a truly classic riff at a slower speed than the previous tracks. This is followed by some really quick double bass and chaotic and heavy riffing. Seriously this song is filled with classic death metal riffs. 9/10
"Vomit The Soul"-Another classic death metal song. Chris Barnes' vocals are awesome here, he even does some shrieks that sound a little bit like black metal. The drums keep up just fine, but the real musical highlight here is the guitar work, it fast, brutal, catchy, and incredibly fun. 9/10
"Butchered At Birth"-This song was really ahead of it's time, it seriously sounds like some of the stuff that death metal bands would be putting together about a decade later. The combination of great rhythmic guitar parts and drumming that follows it on the dot in terms of feeling and speed make this song superb. 9/10
"Rancid Amputation"-Very fast and brutal track. This track just doesn't let up, it will keep blasting you in the face until you start headbanging. 9/10
"Innards Decay"-Another fast and incredibly brutal song and a great one to finish on. 9/10
My favorite tracks on here are "Meat Hook Sodomy", "Covered With Sores", and "Vomit The Soul". This album is classic unrelenting death metal. It seriously doesn't get much more brutal than this. The remastering makes everything much more clear and greatly improves the album as a whole. This is one of the best death metal albums of all time and really deserves a listen.

Cannibal Corpse are the leaders in hardcore death metal. No emo/nu-metal wussy crap here just brutal non-conforming riffs, lyrics and vocals. Great set list and gruesome cover art as is expected from this band. If you don't like this band then you probally should listen to a band called Cannibal Corpse.

THIS IS THE SICKEST, SEEDIEST, MOST BRUTAL DEATH METAL RECORD EVER. At least, I think. Don't try and (or do) tell me anything about the likes of any other major bands or records, I've sampled 'em all. It took me a while to get used to this record; it's so brutal it was hard to listen to and the abundant canniblast put me off at first.
Cannibal Corpse reached the pinnacle of brutal death metal with this record, and all that was left for the genre to do was go in a more technical direction, every release being faster, more technical, more complex, more "brutal", meanwhile it didn't work. More technical = less brutal/primitive. More technical = more sophisticated, and sophistication is the opposite quality of the brute.
