    2 out of 5 stars Boring...   January 20, 2010
    Pocha Dot (Los Angeles)
I got this album back in 2003, I never got around to reviewing it. I saw the link for it while browsing the site and thought "Why Not?".

How I was introduced to SOPHIE:

I purchased this album after seeing "Move This Mountain" performed in a drag-show, I loved the sound and had to know who sang it. Mind you i'd never heard of her before. Then again I heard "Murder On The Dancefloor" at a retail store and learned that it was the same chick that sang the other song I liked at the drag-show. "Murder On The Dancefloor" sounded so much better when the singer was unknown, It created this mysterious sound of "I wonder who that is and what that album sounds like". I went home immediately and ordered my copy of "Read My Lips". The Artwork was so glamorous and I loved album title. I figured I couldn't go wrong especially after liking not (1) but (2) songs. everything was just flowing. I also liked the fact that she was from the UK, and usually that's where the best POP and Dance music hails from, So I was excited.

SUDDENLY!... A knock on the door, the album had finally arrived. (Mind you I'm a music fanatic) so I ripped off the plastic and popped the CD in. I skimmed through the entire album with a crinkled nose thinking to my self "What Am I Listening To?". I WAS NOT pleased at all. "EVERYTHING THAT GLITTERS IS DEFINITELY NOT GOLD", this album is so... Not good. It lacks in so many ways. I noticed Sophie sings with a very strong british accent which is not very becoming, She has one of those Love/Hate voices. You know when listening to her voice that someone ADORES IT. Sophie's singing is pretty harsh on the ears to the AVERAGE person who's tuning in to her music for the first time, It's not awful but you kind of squint your eyes while listening, it's like all you can here is that strong accent, Usually they tend to go away when you sing but not hers.

    The tracks I love:

This isn't a very good album in my own personal opinion. HOWEVER, there are (3) really good songs out of the bunch that I play to this day as if they just came out as brand NEW singles. Those are "Move This Mountain" which is really tough & dramatic, I love this song... The only thing it's missing is an insert of thunderclouds and lightening. Another song I love is "Leave The Others Alone" Another dramatic song with striking violins and a haunting beat, It's fabulous! reminds me a lot of Vitamin C's (Colleen Fitzpatrick) album "More", If you own it- You already know. And last but definitely not least "Universe Is You" everytime I hear this song I think (PEPSI Commercial), I love that! it's a really fun and wacky song, it's a JAM. I would put this song in a class of it's on, You can't compare it to anything else on the album, It has it's on sound, It's VERY "POP". These (3) songs are really good ones, So good I can't even hear the accent in these songs. (I could only stand so much at one time)

    Overall:

I love this style of music but just not these particular songs, This is not a very good production at all. This album is really just... BORING.

    3 out of 5 stars I Expected More   May 14, 2009
    Courtenay Gilford (Washington, D.C.)
Don't get me wrong I am like a really huge fan but I really expected more from this album after I had listened to her third studio album 'Trip the Light Fantastic' but Read My Lips did not deliver. I really hated Groovejet (This Ain't Love) Live Version, the orginal version so so much better than this garbage that they included on this album. But don't get me wrong there were some really great tracks on here like Murder on the Dancelfoor and Move this Mountain just to name two out of the eight tracks that were really good. The others were decent but yet forgettable.

1 out of 5 stars worst album ever   May 13, 2006

I won't say too much bout this stuff, but the first word which come to mind is RUBBISH. and it truely is. the production and all the songs are so weak, that you won't get temper to get it to the end upon first listen. but what is even worse that second listen will never come. So, if you wannna spend 20 bucks or so on quality import music, you'd better try Kym Marsh "Standing Tall" or Anastacia latest compilation "Pieces Of a Dream". Enjoy and don't be fooled by sweet looks on the front cover. Just read her lips: PLEASE, DON'T BUY ME!!!!!!!

I first heard of Sophie while watching TV in Poland on vacation few years ago. The video for "Murder on the Dance Floor" came on and I was instantly enchanted. It was such a cute, ultra-cool disco tune, with catchy music, and Bextor herself had this porcelain skin, glowing pink cheeks and a fabulous green eye shadow. She was so fresh and so different that I fell for her charm instantly! So far I own all of her music but this is the CD you have to have! As her first solo project this little shiny disc is a pearl in the sea of bad music. I mean its hard to get excited when I'm so picky about music, and when so much of it out there is only semi interesting, therefore I don't review a lot of it, I simply don't have time to go on and on make something lukewarm sound appealing. This one is effortlessly lovely. I cannot praise it enough, and I think that UK comes out with some great dance and pop.

Even though Sophie is an ex model, her voice is so unique and beautiful that I know she is more than a pretty face. She really has pure talent that needs to be heard. Her music is fun, really unique, the melodies are all fabulous and I can listen to this CD over and over. I don't think I can ever get bored of it, and I have absolutely loved it since 2002 and 4 years later I am not even remotely tired of it. Her songs here are not all dance or ballads, they are so unique they are almost hard to describe. They are bit disco, electronica, synthesizers, pop and dance.

By the way "Murder on the Dance floor" will make you want to dance. I put it on when I'm in a funk, really loud and it cheers me up. Download the video and watch it, it will make the song even better.

This CD is something great to put on while you're having a party, or listening to it on your iPod while skipping in the rain, while driving in the car with the top down and letting sunshine bathe you, while relaxing or simply when you want some nice fresh tunes. Her music is cool, simple as that and I am positive she will have continuous success.

...is probably the best term I can come up with to describe this album. Sophie Ellis-Bextor's songs with the smart lyrics (and that gorgeous voice!) will make you want to strut down the street feeling all sultry.
