5 out of 5 stars Exquisite album inside and out   August 7, 2009
    moomoo22 (California)
My 22 year old daughter recently left this Velvet Teen EP in my car. This group continues to be widely listened to in our area as we live in the band's hometown of Santa Rosa, California. I listened to the music quite casually as I drove to work, to the gym, to the grocery store, home again and so on. I didn't think I liked it at first, and didn't pay much attention to it. As with all good music, however, I was surprised and tickled to find many of the melodies floating around my head during the day. I began playing the CD's exclusively in the car, gradually expanding my listening repertoire from the obvious standout, more "pop" elements such as Radiapathy and The Prize Fighter (see their terrific MTV videos of these songs online) to Caspian Can Wait, Into the Open, and less "pop-accessible" tracks such as Penning the Penultimate. Death, which is a poignant farewell message from a loved one who has left this life is lovely and deeply moving. If you are looking for unusually intelligent musical and lyrical design from a courageous and distinctive young art-pop group, this is will be a wonderful, addictive surprise for you.

Addendum: an added and poignant element to the Velvet Teen's story and body of work continues to be the loss of original member and drummer, Logan Whitehurst, in December 2006. He succumbed to a brain tumor at age 29. For information on his extensive album art and print-making genius, as well as his funny, engaging, child-like exuberance, and humorous but uniquely melodic body of work celebrating the randomness of life (in other words, Geek rock in the form of the Jr. Science Club), see his official website: [...]

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly great indie rock in the veign of Death Cab For Cutie - chances are you'll love it! - 4.5 stars   January 10, 2006

It was only upon the recommendation of a friend that I even found out about this band, but I'm glad I did! It's not entirely original, but chances are you won't really care. It's basically straight-up indie rock which somehow manages to sound different and unique yet familiar at the same time. The singer does a pretty good job - he doesn't fit the music perfectly, but I think most people will like him. What's great is that the lyrics are interesting (though hard to make out), and that the musicianship is fantastic. Every song here is good, too, as they definitely can make a good hook. I wouldn't call it a classic, but it comes close. Indie and pop rock fans will most likely really enjoy this album. Highly recommended!

    Highlights include:
    the entire album!

5 out of 5 stars if you don't absolutely love this album, you are dead to me.   December 13, 2004

I have tried to expose many people to this album, failing miserably with every attempt. I don't know what it is about that is inaccessible to a great many people, but if you know anything about music you know that this is one of the most original and sonically pleasant and lyrically fantastic albums in a long time. I can't think of another album that is as complete and flawless as this thing.

You just have to hear it. Everybody should at least give it a try, the first time i heard "Death," I think a piece of my heart fell off and disintegrated...never to be found again. Simply amazing.

I live in Santa Rosa, Ca, Velvet Teen's home town, and have had the pleasure of seeing them live. Straight up, Their music is incredible. This cd is an amazing piece of work that contains incredible lyrics and entrancing music. Some people have comapared it to Radiohead or Coldplay, but Velvet Teen stands in a class of the their own. Every song has a great melody that reverbates from the cd player. The standout track is radiapathy, a catchy beautiful song that can be played over and over again. This is a rare find of a cd, and with "elysium" taking off, i'm sure you'll hear from them soon.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing   November 23, 2003

The Velvet Teen's "Out of the Fierce Parade" is a CD that rarely leaves my stereo. It has music for every mood and every moment- whether battling the emo blues or feeling simply fine. Some of the most beautiful music you will ever hear, and some of the most thought-provoking lyrics. Somewhere between Radiohead and Coldplay lies The Velvet Teen: walking a fine line with grace, precision, and soul.
