4 out of 5 stars TAKE IT FOR WHAT ITS WORTH   December 13, 2009
    buxhamm
Let's first say if your not an open minded true death metal fan you wont like this so go ahead and do us all a favor and buy a slipknot ticket so you can see their plagarist bullcrap display of mushroomhead. This may not be The Bleeding by any means but this is a damn good death metal release and yeah it has its overall monotonous death metal speed to it whilst suffering some of the older corpse qualities but if you give it a few listens you'll begin to see the color behind each songs composition that makes this album unique; if not then you obviously havent listened to most death metal bands. Vile, GOS, and BT were VERY brutal(f'n A) though in my opinion too erratic, but this album has its own version of brutality and listenability. It stays well within the headbang category without sacrificing the technical parts. The guitar work is good with catchy riffs throughout the album and the production deserves a 5 star rating. Those who say its muddy and sloppy or too much noise are listening to this through a crappy system or have the unfortunate "corporate ear". Whats heard on this album is meant to be heard because if you dont like it raw and hard then dont call yourself a death metal fans idiots!! Music is all about the feeling and this isnt always easy to find. The best part of most albums is discovering its feeling by LISTENING intentfully and taking it for what its worth.

This is my favorite Cannibal Corpse cd, and the cd that started it all for me. Check it out. You will not be disappointed.

This is good death metal album as usual, by those guys. For those who like brutal death metal should give it a try! This is not their best, but it has solid songs and musicanship is top notch as usual. Standout tracks are gloomy When Death Replaces Life with creative harmonies and brutal slow section! Amother obvious standouts are opening Hatchet To the Head. This one has cool brutal riffs and perfect vokills. "Pit of Zombies" has avesome catchy feel to it and nice guitar solo.
"Dormant Bodies Burtsting" has amazing riffs and scary atmosphere as well!
Overall, a bit weaker then their 2006 "Kill" BUT GOOD!

    5 out of 5 stars INCREDIBLE   February 9, 2006

I bought CC's "VILE" on cassette tape a year or two ago, and still listen to it over and over in my car to this day. I just picked up my second CC album, "GORE OBSESSED", on CD today. It had a black cardboard slipcase covering up the front artwork, for good reason. If any little kid saw this album sitting on the shelf, it would scar his mind. Whoever does the artwork for this band is extremely talented. Musically, this album is INCREDIBLE and JAW DROPPING. The riffs, basslines, drums, and lyrics stick in my head. They are brutal, in-your-face, and memorable. All of the members in this band are extremely talented. I can't wait for their next CD. I heared it's going to be called "Kill".

Ok, for starters, I should state that I am not a death metal fanatic. I primarily listen to classic and progressive rock and classical music like 19th century opera. So obviously I am an unlikely person to be giving this a positive review. However I am also a fan of Horror movies, and that is why I got into cannibal corpse. I tried unsuccessfully to enjoy their music several years ago. I loved the concept of the band, their cover art, their disgusting lyrics, so I purchased a copy of Butchered at Birth, and frankly I couldn't stand it. It wasn't the music, I enjoy some thrash metal (Slayer is a particular favorite of mine), I just couldn't like Chris Barne's voice, it pissed me off. I gave away my copy and felt pissed that I had wasted my money. So now, six years later, my curiosity had risen and I decided to get another album, this time Gore Obsessed, featuring Corpsegrinder as the vocalist. I must say I like Corpsegrinder much better. He still has that same cookie monster growl quality, but I like being able to understand the lyrics, plus he has more range and variation in his vocals. Barnes just sounds like he's throwing up, he could be saying complete gibberish and it would sound exactly the same.

So regarding this album, the lyrics are great fun, really disgusting graphic violence that sounds like a cheap b horror film. And the music is really great, varying tempos and technically complex riffs and screaming guitar solos that sound like the screams of one of this album's many victims. However, as I said, this is not for everyone. I have to be in a very specific mood in order to enjoy this music, but at least its proof that you do not have to exclusively like death metal in order to appreciate this album.
