Amazon.com Jewel is precious. Not just a lame pun, but an accurate enough description of the Jewel Kilcher presented in this hourlong 1999 program, which mixes concert material with interviews, older performance footage, biographical material, etc. (plus three bonus songs from the same '99 show). Problem is, while Jewel's Alaska upbringing and rise to stardom may be uncommon, the same can't be said for her music. She has a fine voice, one that projects power and purity both solo and backed by a rockin' band, but her songs are on the pedestrian side, laced with earnest but sophomoric aphorisms (e.g., "What's Simple Is True") better suited to a college coffee house than the concert stage. And all in all, the disc is more promo than documentary, what with glowing testimonials from her mother, record company chief, agent, and tour manager. Jewel fans will be delighted, but don't look for A Life Uncommon to gain her many converts. --Sam Graham

Worth Every Penny December 26, 2008 C. Warren (Flyer05) If you are a Jewel fan, there is no question, you need this DVD. If you are investigating, check it out; her voice is absolutely amazing. Better live than on a CD.
I love Jewel December 28, 2007 Thomas P. Ladd (Phoenix, AZ USA) This DVD is sort of a background on Jewel - her early club days in San Diego and her early tours. The interviews with her family are moderately interesting. You get to see her in a variety of venues doing different styles of work.
Good for any fan of Jewel July 24, 2007 D. James This dvd has lots of footage of Jewel scatting in live performance and footage of Jewel and her family. It even has a short clip about the photo shoot for Spirit. If you are a fan of Jewel's music and/or her, you'll enjoy this dvd. If you aren't a fan, you probably won't have any interest in it beyond seeing a beautiful, extraordinary woman in live performances and such, but if you do watch it all the way through, you may become a fan.
Alaska's gift to the lower forty-eight! It's not polished but it's real. Too short though! May 17, 2006 Ricahrd A. Salzer (Chesapeake, Virginia, USA) A very fine collection, especially Barcelona. But way too short. Keep checking her site for a new, and DVD to come out in late '06 or early '07!
Due to things happened... February 23, 2006 John D. Leonard (Pennsylvania United States) As I just adore Jewel and all the ways she has imfluenced my life. She is a huge role model for my rediscovering the finer points in life. This DVD is a very opened way of getting to know a lot about Jewel like where she's from family life and how her family supported her in her dream. She is from a very artistic family and much of it is seen in her performances and comes out in the songs she decides to record. They all have messages not to give up and to follow dreams and not to overlook or pass them over.
