Biting, sometimes base satire and humor populates this 21-cut comedy-rock debut from actor-musician Jack Black and his band, Tenacious D. Sort of like a trashier, more casual and less musical Beck, vocalist-guitarist Black and guitarist-vocalist Kyle Gass, with help from Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Redd Kross's Steve McDonald, and Page McConnell of Phish, deliver oddball musings that will appeal mostly to fans of the talented Black, whose earned a following thanks to memorable, frenetic turns in the films Hi Fidelity and Jesus' Son. The songs and "bits" include the wonderfully, intentionally melodramatic "Wonderboy," Black ordering "four Chicken McNuggets" on "Drive Thru," and the funny ode to vocalist Ronnie James Dio, where Black observes, "Dio has rocked for a very long time / Now it's time for him to pass the torch." With often intentionally droll and dumb humor smartly executed like a latter-day version of Bob & Doug McKenzie with a dash of Spinal Tap, this more-comedy-than-rock debut is likely to achieve cult status. --Katherine Turman

5 out of 5 stars Best Band in the World!!!   March 26, 2002

These guys are truly amazing. I have always loved Jack Black as an actor, but seeing him as a musician is even better! The songs are actually good songs. The music is creative and catchy and the lyrics will make you die from laughter. Being a musician myself, I would have to say that this is quality music and is a must have for all those who don't already own it....JB and KG, Tenacious D, This CD is Key!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Actual Genuine Music!   January 3, 2002

Jack and Kyle are obviously having a ball. Though clearly self-indulgent, they take this self-indulgence to the level of art form. Adolescent only in that it is pot and sex driven, this music has a heart and a genuineness that is most certainly art. While the music and content do become repetitive, one stays truly charmed throughout the album, willingly hanging on for dear life until the next gem presents itself. Everyone I talk to who knows this album becomes really happy at its mention. My only serious complaint would be the poor production value. This music is meant to be played LOUD, but it is impossible to reach the level of satisfaction without the music becoming muddled and unlistenable. At times the volume levels of the sketches drop off the map. I hope the boys get enough juice off this to get a better producer for next time.

This band is hilarious! Yes, I have heard their songs from the acoustic shows, so shut up. Kyle Gass is a guitar god, and Jack Black has incredible range. I love the song Tribute. It's so Zeppelin. Also, The Road and Karate are classics. I don't understand Lee and Explosivo. What's with that? I wish they could tell the stories about the songs first, and have the album a bit longer. Oh well. Bye!

5 out of 5 stars Spinal Tap comparisons may abound...   January 1, 2002

...but Tenacious D really is pretty special, and might even deserve that comparison. What might seem on the surface to be a simple lowbrow hard-rock parody, displays a canny knowledge of the cliched catchwords of "rawk" writers (in "Tribute") and tastefully understated music that will insinuate itself into your ears and then eat your brain. Enjoy!
