Madonna's second album was her breakthrough, thanks principally to two gimmicky hits: the sinuous "Like a Virgin," with its taboo-busting metaphor for that fresh, clean new-love feeling, and the cutesy, Betty-Boopsy "Material Girl." Most of the rest of the album, although similarly frothy, is superior to those warhorses, notably the irresistible LP tracks "Over and Over," and "Pretender"--which adds a bit of gossamer delicacy to the mandatory bounciness. "Dress You Up" is a Madonna classic, an insubstantial dance-pop delight bedecked in synthesized bells and replete to the beat with kinky suggestions. And there's a sign of greater depth to come in her cover of Rose Royce's elegiac ballad "Love Don't Live Here Anymore," a heartfelt vocal supported by a subtle, gorgeous arrangement helmed by producer Nile Rodgers and his two key Chic instrumental compatriots, Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson. --Ken Barnes

    5 out of 5 stars Madonna ... LIKE A VIRGIN (1984)   September 30, 2009

Madonna became a pretty big star when she released her first album entitled, MADONNA, in July of 1983. But what Madonna did expect was to become an even bigger star in November of 1984, over a year after the release of her first album. In November of 1984, Madonna released her second album entitled, LIKE A VIRGIN. Now, this album has the same style and sound as the first album, with Madonna continuing to dress up in the same style as she did for the first album, but in this situation, it did not matter, for Madonna was still very fresh and new, and because the fans did not care, since this album went on to become Madonna's first #1 album (Billboard Hot 200).

    MATERIAL GIRL
The album's second single. This song may have hit the #2 position (Billboard Hot 100), but that doesn't mean that this song wasn't a huge hit for Madonna. This song is supposed to be Madonna stating that most women in the world are very materialistic, always wanting jewelery and furs and new dresses, and such. Madonna even pointed out the song's message in the music video, where she dressed up as 60s icon, Marilyn Monroe.

    ANGEL
The album's third single. This song is one of Madonna's greatest and I am disappointed to know that a great song like this was never a hit.

    LIKE A VIRGIN
The album's first single. This was Madonna's first-ever #1 hit (Billboard Hot 100). It was the song, just like the album, that made Madonna an even bigger star. This is one of the greatest songs Madonna has ever recorded. Madonna has even decided to sing this song on her CONFESSIONS TOUR.

    OVER AND OVER
A great song with a great message, telling us to get up "Over And Over", if we are knocked down while trying to achieve our goals in life.

    LOVE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE
    Great.

    DRESS YOU UP
The album's fourth & final single. What I love about this song is how Madonna, through words and sense of fashion, talks about how much she loves her boyfriend, telling him that, "...Gonna DRESS YOU UP in my love...".

    SHOO-BEE-DOO
This is one of Madonna's prettiest ballads. I love that sax solo in the middle of the song.

    PRETENDER
    Not bad.

    STAY
    Not bad.

This album has proven that Madonna is here to stay. No matter what those airhead critics think or say, Madonna will remain the Queen Diva. This album shows that to us all, whether you are a fan or not.

This is probably my favorite Madonna album. It is a classic. It is everything great about Madonna, the 80's and pop music rolled into one great album.

4 out of 5 stars THE ALBUM THAT MADE MADONNA AN ICON   April 16, 2009

"Like a Virgin" honestly is not my favorite album from Madonna, but I do remember it vividly as a kid, it was the first time I noticed Madonna, this beautiful, playful, spunky young lady with the confidence to match. I remember how the title track rocked the world along with its video. Other songs on the album that I remember well are "Dress you up", "Over and Over", "Angel" "Material Girl" and "Pretender". This is the album that made Madonna into an MTV Pop Icon, a classic.

3 out of 5 stars Took time to grow on me!   March 24, 2009

I initially hated this album, because it was made way before my time. And has a fan of 80s pop this album really disappointed me. After listening to this album a few monthes later, and recently becoming a fan of Madonna. I found this album to be quite surprising. I initially couldn't stand the vocals, and on a few of the tracks the vocals still sound like a screeching banchee. Material Girl,Dress You Up,Over and Over. But there are a few gems on here such as Into the Groove(one of my favorite madonna songs and a classic), angel, love dont live here anymore, and pretender. I really thought Madonna sang surprisingly good on love don't live here any more. Im usually not a fan of her high pitch, but love dont live here any more was a beautiful ballad, with perhaps some of madonnas best vocal work.(thats what i listen for voice). As for Pretender had a pretty good bass synth sound.I also liked the vocal work on stay. Never have been a big fan of like a virgin, but everybodys heard of the song, and it can be catchy at times, yet annoying. The Lyrics and video are pretty clever. Overall, this album was alittle better then I thought it would be. If your a fan of 80s pop,you should give this a listen through. It's not her best, but its pretty decent. Plus her vocals might surprise you.

Like a Virgin being Madonna's 1984 and her 2nd studio album was her major breakthrough with such major hits as Like a Virgin and Material Girl. Other tracks that stand out on this realeas are Love does not live here anymore and Into the groove. The booklet is really nice with two fine photographs of Madonna looking very stylish in different outfits. The lyrics are very easy to read and it has a nice list of whom played and what they played on each track. 4/5.
